After an unsuccessful assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump on Saturday, Republican delegates are gathering at the Republican National Convention this week to formally nominate him for president. Representative Michael Bayham of Chalmette says security at the RNC is tight.

Trump was not seriously hurt in the assassination attempt, but two people were and one person was killed.

 
During the assassination attempt, 50-year-old Tony Hemker of Virginia was in the crowd. He went with his wife’s uncle, who had removed his hearing aids because they were near an overhead speaker, about 45 yards from the stage. When he heard the shots, Hemker turned to the right and saw a bullet go through a speaker and fall to the ground.

Fitness guru and New Orleans native Richard Simmons passed away on Saturday at the age of 76. Simmons was born in New Orleans in 1948 and was an overweight child, but became a cultural phenomenon because of his energetic personality displayed in his exercise videos. Five people were killed in a house fire in the Houma area Saturday morning. A sixth person was able to escape. Authorities were called about 3:45. Among the victims, three adults, a teenager and a toddler. The surviving victim is a teenager. Authorities say they are looking at surveillance footage from neighbors and the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. The blaze happened in the 300 block of Louise Lane.

 

As the temperature continues to climb, motorists may encounter a disruption known as road buckling. Louisiana DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says road buckling is a normal thing that happens to concrete roads in heat. With the rising summer temperatures, Louisiana drivers begin seeing road buckling. Louisiana DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says unfortunately, it can happen suddenly and unexpectedly and there’s no way to prevent road buckles. If you encounter one while driving, she recommends reporting it to your regional DOTD as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Two attendees are critically injured, and one man who reportedly threw himself in front of his family to shield them is dead. The twenty-year-old shooter was outside the rally on a nearby rooftop and was killed by counter snipers. Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana had this to say

Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels also brought home some hardware Thursday night after winning the award for Best Men’s Sports Collegiate Athlete. Daniels threw for over 38-hundred yards and 40 touchdowns and added over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground in his final, Heisman-winning season at LSU. The NFL Draft’s second-overall pick will report for Commanders training camp July 28.

Steve Gleason was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY’s Thursday night. After being diagnosed with ALS in 2011, Gleason was told he had three years to live. When he learned he received the Courage Award, he reflected on what it meant. Confined to a wheelchair and able to use technology to speak Gleason says to be courageous we must first experience fear and suffering.

Aaliyah Jack will be charged with second-degree murder and cruelty to a juvenile after abandoning her four-year-old and infant sons. The four-year-old was found dead behind a Welcome Center in Vinton Monday, and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory said it was a miracle the infant was found alive after surviving two days on its own along I-10. He says it’s been an emotional week and case.

President Joe Biden held a press conference Thursday night to try and disprove rumors about alleged cognitive decline, but whether he accomplished that is debatable. Mel Bridges has more.

Former LSU Pitcher Paul Skenes has been named as the starter for the National League All-Stars. Skenes becomes the 5th rookie in MLB history to receive the All-Star starting nod and his 11 starts this season match the fewest in a career to earn a starting spot. The MLB All-Star game is set for Tuesday July 16.
