Republican Elbert Guillory who represented Opelousas in the state legislature, qualified for the newly drawn 6th congressional district today. 80-year-old Guillory says the 6th District congressional lines were severely gerrymandered and he believes the district will be modified but in the meantime, it deserves to be properly represented.

Two of the candidates that qualified today for the newly drawn 6th congressional district are no stranger to politics. Democrat Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields served two terms in Congress in the 90s, and Republican Elbert Guillory represented Opelousas in the state legislature.
61-year-old Fields says even though the current congressional map with a second majority-minority district is being challenged, he won’t be distracted from his job.

80-year-old Guillory says the 6th district congressional lines were severely gerrymandered and he believes it will be modified. In the meantime, he says, the district deserves to be properly represented.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Jefferson Parish spoke at the Republican National Convention last night. Since tighter immigration laws and policies are a main push for Republicans, Scalise says keeping illegal immigrants out of the country is a top priority.

The law lets drivers appeal tickets from cameras by proving there were outside issues involved, like if someone else was driving their car or if there were hazardous conditions. Additionally, Cathey says now if you get a ticket from a traffic camera….

Holly’s attorney, Mike Small, says he and the prosecutor requested the change because they are still in the process of receiving evidence from the February shooting that injured two people in Union Parish…

The law allows drivers to appeal tickets from traffic cameras by proving there were outside issues involved, like if someone else was driving their car or if there were hazardous conditions.

A nine-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by an alligator in Lake Pontchartrain. The New Orleans Fire Department says the scary incident happened Sunday while the child was swimming with his family. The boy sustained laceration and puncture wounds. Fire officials credit the child’s father for acting quickly to fend off the six-foot alligator.

The University of Louisiana System is expected to name Jimmy Genovese as the next president of Northwestern State. A formal vote will occur tomorrow. Genovese currently serves as a judge on the Louisiana Supreme Court. The 74-year-old is Northwestern State grad and Governor Landry has pushed for him to get the job.

Qualifying for the fall elections are underway. All six of Louisiana’s congressional seats are up for election and there’s an open seat on the Public Service Commission. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says being a P-S-C member is a coveted political job…

The underage gambling charges against former LSU receiver Kayshon Boutte have been dropped. He was arrested in January. The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s office says Boutte has completed a gambling awareness program and executed a self-ban. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says Boutte’s case will be a lesson learned for LSU and the NCAA, as they need to monitor college athletes when it comes to sports wagering.

Holly’s attorney Mike Small says he and the prosecution requested a delay because the state is still in the process of providing evidence from the shooting in Union Parish that injured two people. Small says he wants to clear Holly of the gun charge, so he can play football for the Tigers…

A state judge has sentenced Charlene Henderson of Shreveport to life in prison after she shot her husband and then doused his body with gasoline. The brutal murder took place in May of 2022. Prosecutors say when officers arrived on the scene, there was an overwhelming smell of gasoline and crime scene photos showed ashes covering Larry Clark’s body.

State Police say when he was under 21, Boutte used a fictious name to place spots bets through a mobile app, but did not bet against LSU. A new report from Bankrate found more than one-third of U.S. workers say they’re living paycheck to paycheck on their current salary. Bankrate analyst Sarah Foster believes people have less spending money now than in the past. Workers in the southern United States were most likely to report living paycheck to paycheck, which Foster says isn’t surprising.

The Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association (LADA) recently released its 2023 Economic Impact Report. President and CEO of LADA Coulter McMahen says the independent dealer model is especially important to local communities, which is illustrated in the over 18 million dollars in charitable donations given in 2023.
