Louisiana Celebration Gator is making its third straight appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. The float has highlighted state tourism and encouraged an estimated 2.4 billion people to visit the Bayou State for the last two years. Secretary of State Billy Nungesser believes the gator has been a good return on investment.

Cajun fiddler Amanda Shaw from Mandeville and Alexandria country singer Alex Smith will entertain the Parade crowd.

And in case you hadn’t heard, Arena Football is coming to Lake Charles. The Area Football League announced the revival of the Louisiana Voodoo Franchise. The team last played as the New Orleans Voodoo in 2015. The Voodoo will begin play in Lake Charles next year.

Voter turnout for the October primary election was 36-percent and the Secretary of State’s Office is predicting voter turnout to be less than half that number this time. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says it’s the third year the 60-foot-long gator will crawl the streets of New York and he’s excited to announce the two Bayou State musical artists that will also appear.

LSU Health New Orleans Public Health Expert Dr. Benjamin Springgate suggests keeping a regular sleep schedule.

The southbound portion of Interstate 55 damaged by the 168-vehicle pileup that killed seven people in St. John the Baptist Parish is closed now and will reopen this afternoon at 1. Motorists are encouraged to use old US 51 as an alternate route. The northbound lanes remain closed.

LSU Health New Orleans Public Health Expert Dr. Benjamin Springgate says daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 am and the annual shift in time may cause sleep deprivation and mood disturbances to increase. While sleep has an overall impact on your health, he says not everyone will be affected by the time change in the same way.

Days will continue to get shorter with sunset scheduled for 4:40 p.m. when daylight saving time ends on Nov. 5.

Authorities have arrested 37-year-old Denise Law in the deadly beating of 66-year-old Melinda Reed. BRPD officers responded to a call of an unresponsive female Thursday afternoon. Sargent Darren Ahmed says it remains to be determined if mental illness played a role.

Authorities believe Law used a metal walker as a murder weapon. The investigation is ongoing.

Cajun fiddler Amanda Shaw from Mandeville and Alexandria country singer Alex Smith will entertain the crowd. In 2021 Grammy-award-winning artist Jon Batiste appeared on Celebration Gator and in 2022 Trombone Shorty wowed the crowd. For 2024, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says they’ll determine if Celebration Gator will make an encore.

And Louisiana will once again have a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day.  The featured acts will be announced in a few weeks.

Arena Football is coming to Lake Charles. The Area Football League announced the revival of the Louisiana Voodoo Franchise. The team last played as the New Orleans Voodoo in 2015. Louisiana Voodoo will now play home games in Lake Charles at the Sudduth Coliseum. The Voodoo will begin play next year.

Baton Rouge Police have arrested 37-year-old Denise Law in the beating death of 66-year-old Melinda Reed. Sargent Darran Ahmed says Law was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with 1st Degree Murder.

While the investigation remains open, Ahmed says it remains to be determined if mental illness played a role in the incident.

 

Interstate 55 Northbound between Ponchatoula and LaPlace will remain closed for at least a couple more weeks and on Saturday the Southbound lanes of I-55 will also shut down from SEVEN AM to ONE PM to prepare a lane shift at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash that occurred last month. When I-55 southbound reopens in the afternoon, drivers will use the right lane near the crash site as crews repair the left. Travelers can use U S Hwy 51 as an alternate route.
