The Lake Charles City Council voted down a measure requesting the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury remove the South’s Defenders Monument at the Calcasieu Courthouse. The Council voted down Councilwoman Mary Morris’ resolution on a 4-2 vote. Morris says she understands history and her measure was not looking to get rid of the confederate monument…
The resolution requested the monument be removed from the courthouse and placed in a museum. Morris says she put forth the measure at the request of her constituents. Those in favor of the resolution plan to request their police jury representatives place the item on the jury’s agenda. Morris says this monument represents the darkest time in African-American history…
Morris says the monument does not belong on public property. Opponents of the measure say removing the monument will take away their heritage. However, Morris says this is not about taking away people’s ability to honor their heritage, history, and veterans…

Running back Derrius Guice collapsed at the football practice facility last night and Miles says they don’t know what the incoming freshman’s ailment is but he’s undergoing tests at a hospital in Baton Rouge. The state Department of Education announces that a record number of high school seniors earned a score of 18 or higher on the ACT, which allows grads to attend college without needing to take remedial courses. Superintendent of Education John White says nearly 25,000 students earned a college going score on the ACT, a 35 percent increase from 2012.
African American students have seen the biggest ACT gains. White says the number of African American students to earn college-going scores has increased by more than 2,000 since 2012
Louisiana’s average composite score has increased by .2 from last year and is now 19.4. White says smaller rural districts made great gains because of intentional efforts by local education leaders to provide courses that help students get ready for college.
