Cut 2 (33) “I’m Kevin Barnhart”
A Lafayette man has been cited with criminal mischief after allegedly crying wolf about his sinking ship. Benjamin Becnel could be facing a 500 dollar fine and some prison time calling in what authorities say was a false alarm Monday on the waters in Pointe Coupee Parish. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Spokesperson Adam Einck says Becnel never explained why he did it.
Einck says the August 13th mayday call lead to a large scale mobilization and search and rescue effort that ultimately was completely unnecessary.
Becnel says the late night search efforts involving multiple agencies and even a coast guard search chopper came with a hefty tab. A tab that Mr. Becnel may end up having to pick up.
Cut 5 (11) “distressed boater”
Einck wanted to remind people not to call in false alarms while out on the water.

Two Yankee elephants from buffalo are on their way to the Audubon zoo in New Orleans after a year’s long search for good roommates for the existing elephants at the zoo paid off. The two Asian elephants, Jothi and Surapa will be shipped by road to the Audubon by the end of the year. Audubon General Curator Joel Hamilton says their personalities mesh well with the existing pair.
Hamilton says elephants have been a popular part of the zoo for over three decades, and is looking forward to adding to the herd that’s housed in a new facility built in 2016.
Hamilton says the zoo has been on the search for the last two years for some new friends for the existing pair, which currently lives in a house built for four.

Burglary, Theft, Vehicle Arson… just some of the many reasons why 24-year-old Keithen Banks is a wanted man by several agencies in Jefferson Parish. The State Fire Marshal is asking for the public’s help in locating the man, and spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says anyone willing to commit a crime with fire is to be considered a dangerous person.
