Synthetic rubber manufacturer Denka Performance Elastomer says it will be forced to shut down its Reserve plant if EPA restrictions aren’t relaxed after the agency shortened Denka’s deadline to reduce emissions from 2 years to 90 days. Louisiana Chemical Association President Greg Bowser says that’s an impossible task.

The EPA says the 90-day rule is needed because Denka poses a quote-unquote “imminent and substantial danger” to nearby communities.

It will expand the state’s current voucher program, which allows parents to use public dollars to pay for private school tuition. The governor wants the Education Savings Account available for families of all income levels. 64 college baseball teams wake up today, five wins away from reaching the College World Series. The NCAA Baseball Tournament begins today and there are six teams from Louisiana.

The defending national champion LSU Tigers are in North Carolina where they’ll face Wofford at 11 AM. LSU has won 18 of it last 24 and the Tigers are seeking their 20th College World Series appearance.

Wofford is making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Louisiana Tech takes on Kansas State tonight in the opening round of the Fayetteville Regional. The Wildcats plan to start senior Owen Boerema on the mound. He’s six and three with a 4.91 ERA. Bulldogs Coach Lane Burroughs says Boerema is a tough left-handed pitcher

Saints legend Drew Brees will be inducted into the team’s hall of fame this year. In his 15 years in New Orleans, Brees led the NFL in passing seven times and threw for over five-thousand yards five times. When Brees came to the Saints prior to the 2006 season, there was a major concern about his throwing shoulder as he injured it badly in his final season in San Diego…

Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says while passage is a win for the governor, a watered-down version of the original bill is what he’ll have the opportunity to sign.

In the final version of the legislation, Erwin says the amount of money each family could potentially receive remains to be determined. He believes lawmakers wanted to proceed with caution due to an anticipated budget shortfall in the future.

The program will begin the next school year and Erwin says it will primarily focus on students currently enrolled and eligible for the school voucher program, then open to other students depending on their family’s income level.

Oversight and accountability of the program will fall under the purview of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and determine the mechanics of how the program will work.

A bill headed to the Governor’s desk will eliminate the requirement to give 16- and 17-year-old employees at least a 20-minute break when they work at least five hours. Denham Springs Representative Roger Wilder says this legislation is less red tape for employers hiring minors which makes the hiring process more productive.

PM Cut 4 (13) “…with paperwork.” 

With the session scheduled to wrap up on Monday, there are several bills still trying to make it across the finish line. And one is to eliminate the 30-year statute of limitations where one can be prosecuted for child molestation. Representative Tim Kerner hopes the bill, which passed unanimously in the House, will reach the governor’s desk.

The Senate is expected to take up the state budget Friday and the session must end by 6pm Monday June 3rd.
