Big news for Jefferson Parish, Japanese Chemical Company UBE to construct the first US facility to manufacture key components for electrical vehicle car batteries there. Brooke Thorington has more.

An early morning fire at an apartment complex in Shreveport caused quite a scare this morning. It happened around three am. According to reports, everyone was evacuated and Shreveport Firefighters were able to put out the blaze. So far there are no details on whether anyone was injured.

Governor Jeff Landry is pleased with what state lawmakers were able to accomplish in the special session on crime. They approved measures that take a tough on crime approach.  But House Democratic Causus Chairman Matthew Willard says the bills they passed will make Louisiana’s prison population explode, meaning higher costs for taxpayers.

All eyes are on Iowa’s Caitlyn Clark this weekend as she is 18 points away from surpassing LSU legend Pete Marvaich’s Division one career scoring record. Maravich scored 3,667 points in three years at LSU, without a three-point line.  Clark is in her fourth season at Iowa, averages 28 points a game. Pistol Pete’s son Jaeson Maravich says apples to oranges comparison….

Governor Jeff Landry’s special session on crime is over and the legislature approved quite a few measures….expanding methods used to carry out executions, lowering the age one can be charged with a felony from 18 to 17 years old, restrictions on parole and probation and permitless conceal carry. Governor Landry says what was accomplished will make the state safer.

But House Democratic Caucus Chairman Matthew Willard says the special session failed to address the root causes of crime. He says the lock them up and throw away the key approach does not work…

The first U.S. manufacturing plant for Japanese Chemical Company UBE, which makes components for electric vehicle batteries, will be in Jefferson Parish.  President of Jefferson Parish Economic Development Jerry Bologna says it’s a significant foreign direct investment of $500 million to the community.

The second ranked LSU baseball team started the weekend off on a strong note as they defeated 14th ranked Texas six to three. Luke Holman struckout 12 hitters and was the winning pitcher. Michael Braswell had a two run single, Tommy White hit a solo home run and Jared Jones had a three-run blast. The Tigers face U-L Lafayette tonight.

The Cajuns lost to Vanderbilt seven to four. Louisaina Tech is 9-0 for the for the first time in school history after blanking Army four to nothing. Cole McConnell hit a two run homer. The Bulldogs will play Creighton at 1:00 today and the Blue Jays are also undefeated.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak by beating Southern Miss 77-61. ULM lost to South Alabama 80-69 and the Warhawks will play Coastal Carolina on Tuesday in the Sun Belt Tourney. The Cajuns will play the winner of that game on Thursday.

And in Rapids parish, a new Amazon distribution center will be constructed in the town of Boyce. President and CEO of Central Louisiana Jim Clinton says while many companies tend to set up distribution hubs along Interstates 10 and 20, they are beginning to see breakthroughs in the past year with Lowes and now Amazon for Central Louisiana. Louisiana Central along with the Boyce Chamber of Commerce will share hiring information for Amazon on their website and social media pages when it becomes available.

The second ranked LSU baseball team faces its toughest test of the season tonight when they take on 13th ranked Texas at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Longhorns are 7-1 and they’ve allowed just seven runs in their last five games.

Louisiana Tech will try to stay undefeated when they face Army at 6 Pm in Sugarland, Texas.

It’s the final night of the regular season for Sun Belt men’s basketball. The Ragin Cajuns will try to snap a four game losing streak when they host Southern Miss. ULM is at South Alabama. The Warhawks can receive a first round bye in the Sun Belt Tournament with a win tonight in Mobile and some help.

The Sun Belt released its football schedule today. The Ragin Cajuns have only one home game in October and that’s October 12th against Appalachian State. ULM begins league play September 28th at Troy and then they’ll host James Madison and Southern Miss.

In the NBA…the Pelicans are at Indiana.

LSU Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jayden Daniels met with the media today at the NFL Draft combine. Daniels is expected to be a top five pick, but he’s not trying to spend too much time thinking about who could select him…

The project intends to bolster the domestic battery components supply chain and reduce the current reliance on Asian imports. President of Jefferson Parish Economic Development Jerry Bologna says the plant in Jefferson Parish will manufacture key elements for EV batteries.

To secure the project Louisiana offered a competitive incentives package that includes workforce development.
