A task force convened by Gov.-elect Jeff Landry met this week to weigh the rollback of 2017 laws aimed at lowering Louisiana’s prison population. Outgoing Governor John Bel Edwards meanwhile warning the incoming administration again against the move. Edwards says it would be a kneejerk political reaction unlikely to yield real results.

Speaking of results, a lot goes into a Heisman campaign, and the LSU Athletic Department claimed a win in 2019 and odds are they will again tomorrow. Brooke Thorington has more.

LSU and the University of Louisiana System have announced they will mirror the state’s policy to offer employees up to six weeks of paid paternal leave even though the policy does not apply to college employees. University of Louisiana System President Doctor Jim Henderson says the policy allows parents to be able to focus on their newest addition to the family and it lessens the financial strain.

Oak Grove has a football dynasty going as the Tigers took home their fourth state championship in five years with a dominant 62-36 victory over Haynesville in the Division Four select state championship game. Jackson Bradley and Jay Freeman each rushed for three touchdowns.

In the Division Four-select title game. Southern Lab outlasted Riverside 42-35. That’s a sixth state title for the Kittens and a second in three years. Jerome Harris had two TD runs in the fourth quarter for the Kittens.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels was named A-P College Football Player of the Year. Tomorrow night he’s expected to win the Heisman Trophy.

The Pelicans were soundly defeated last night by the Lakers in the semi-finals of the NBA in-season tournament, 133- to-89. A vintage performance from Lebron James as King James had 30 points and eight assists.

If you do encounter a small fire on a stove, turn it off and cover the pot. A fire extinguisher can be useful but they can be tricky and may push grease out of a pan worsening the issue. Rodrigue says, if the fire is too big, don’t hesitate. Just get out of the house.

It was after Daniels played his historic game against Florida with 372 passing yards, 234 rushing yards, and five touchdowns, that Worsham says they amped up the Heisman campaign for ‘That Kid Jayden.’

Worsham says Daniels’ outgoing personality has made the Heisman campaign a lot of fun and what you see on the field is what you get. For some, the spotlight can be a bit too much, but for the kid, Worsham says Daniels is taking it all in stride…

On Thursday Daniels was named AP College Football Player of the Year, he’s the second LSU player to receive the honor. The first was Joe Burrow in 2019, who also won the Heisman that year.

While the Saints are struggling to find solutions during their three-game losing streak, running back Alvin Kamara is hopeful the team can follow his lead and start having a solution-based mindset. Kamara says it’s important for the team to focus on the steps that lead to a solution and not just the problems they currently face

An unforeseen number of Lions fans were in the stands last Sunday as the lower half of the Caesars Superdome was noticeably Honolulu blue and silver. Kamara says he had never seen anything like that as a player in the NFL and the boos by Who Dat nation was unsettling but justified.

31-year-old Treston Bickham of Tangipahoa Parish has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison after he carjacked his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint and also dragged her by her hair when she jumped out of the vehicle last year in Baton Rouge. The victim told the court she hopes Bickham gets the help he needs.

Along with the cold, much-needed rain is coming to Louisiana this weekend. That’s good news and recent rains have made a difference but along with the good news comes the bad. State Climatologist Barry Keim says we’ve only improved in one drought category and at least 87% of Louisiana remains in extreme drought.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels received another huge honor today as he was named the AP player of the year, beating out Washington’s Michael Penix and Oregon’s Bo Nix. Daniels is in Baltimore tonight to receive the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and then he’ll head to New York City for a full day of activities tomorrow. He’s is the favorite to win the Heisman on Saturday night.

The 2023 Prep Classic is underway in the Caesars Superdome as over the next three days eight champions will be crowned in high school football. A 15-year-old and his mother have been arrested for the murder of Kameran Bedsole in Iberia Parish last month. 40 year old Sabrina Washing was arrested Tuesday. Her 11-year-old daughter was arrested last month. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Spokesperson Katherine Breaux

The murder of 36-year-old Kameran Bedsole took place at a residence in the 47 hundred block of Jasper Road in New Iberia.

Marsh fires in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes prompted road closures and even forced this morning. Trooper Ross Brennan says they don’t take closure lightly. They’re are trying to motorists safe. He urges drivers to be patient when low visibility remains a high probability in the area.

40-year-old Sabrina Washington and her 15-year-old son have been arrested for their connection to the murder of Kameran Bedsole in Iberia Parish last month. Her 11-year-old daughter is already in custody. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Spokesperson Katherine Breaux says the 15-year-old who used to live in Iberia Parish was captured in Texas Tuesday.

Breaux says the male juvenile was transported to the Jackson Parish Juvenile Detention Center. She says the mother of the two suspects was also arrested in Iberia Parish on Tuesday.

The murder of 36-year-old Kameran Bedsole took place at a residence in the 47 hundred block of Jasper Road in New Iberia. Breaux says the sheriff’s office is not providing details on a motive but asks for the public to remain patient as the investigation is ongoing.

Remote marsh fires in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes prompted road closures and even forced some schools to close for the day. Trooper Ross Brennan says LA Highway 182 and Highway 90 have reopened for now.

Due to the remote location of the marsh fires it’s more difficult for firefighters to and it continues to plague motorists in the area.

In October a combination of fog and smoke from the marsh fires caused a multiple-car pileup of more than 168 vehicles on Interstate 55 in southeast Louisiana and killed seven people.

Brennan says they don’t take closure lights and they are trying to motorists safe. He urges drivers to be patient as low visibility remains a high probability in the area.
