State officials are urging residents to be extremely cautious about lighting anything on fire after dry and windy conditions contributed to a record number of wildfires over four days. State Ag and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says from Friday to Monday there were 124 fires in Louisiana.

There are burn bans in Beauregard, Morehouse, Union, Washington, and Calcasieu Parishes.

Tulane Professor of Health Policy and Management Mark Diana says independent rural hospitals are at the highest risk of closing and cutting services. He says those owned by hospital systems may fare better because they benefit from the size of the system.

The Pelicans snapped a two-game losing streak last night with a 115 to 92 win over the New York Knicks. Trey Murphy scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 26. New Orleans is at Indiana tonight.

For the third time in four games, LSU men’s hoops won a game by one point last night. The Tigers defeated Georgia 67-66 as Will Baker made two free throws with 15 seconds left. The Tigers are now 7-8 in the SEC.

ULM lost to Texas State 73-55.

The Ragin Cajuns will try to snap a three-game losing streak tonight when they host Troy. Coach Bob Marlin’s team is coming off a loss to Southern Miss and the Cajuns lost by six to Troy earlier this season.

Louisiana is at the top of another list and it’s not a good one. A new study based on FBI data shows we’re among the top states in the nation when it comes to the number of aggravated assaults. Louisiana ranked fifth on the list, behind only Tennessee, Arkansas, Alaska and New Mexico.

Commissioner Mike Strain says dry vegetation and high winds allowed brush piles that were being burned to quickly get out of control and others who were burning timber.

The number are in on Mardi Gras and law enforcement is reporting they made 383 arrests in New \Orleans and removed 143 guns from the French Quarter and Downtown Development District during a twelve day period leading up to Fat Tuesday. Another one-point win for the LSU men’s basketball team last night as the Fighting Tigers defeated Georgia 67-66. Will Baker hit two free throws with 15 seconds left and then the Tigers needed a block from Jalen Reed with two seconds left to preserve the victory. Baker finished with 12 points and Jordan Wright led LSU with 17.

ULM men’s basketball lost at Texas State 73 to 55 in a game the Bobcats dominated throughout.

The Warhawks had better luck on the diamond as ULM defeated Northwestern State nine to two in Natchitoches. Jake Haggard homered in the win. Nicholls scored three runs in the tenth inning to beat Southern Miss six to five.

He says he’ll lobby for the end of the three-year rule, which prohibits insurers from dropping a customer they’ve insured for three years…
