The Louisiana Fire Service is mobilized to support rescue and recovery operations in South Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Baton Rouge Fire Chief Mike Kimble says teams with the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal have built a robust unit capable of urban rescue and swift water rescue.

The teams arrived last week.

A young child is killed in a crash in Claiborne Parish, and troopers say the fact that the child was improperly restrained made the difference between life and death. Trooper Eddie Thomas says 31-year-old Jordan Burton of Homer drove her Toyota SUV across the center line on Highway 146, crashing into a Ram pickup.

But the five-year-old and ten-year-old in the SUV were not properly restrained. The five-year-old was killed, and the ten-year-old was severely injured.

Will there be a special session on insurance reform? That’s what nearly every Louisianian saddled with sky-high auto and property insurance rates wants to know. Pollack Representative Gabe Firment, the chairman of the House Insurance Committee ,cautions that there’s almost nothing that the legislature can do to lower your insurance rates.

Nearly every Louisianian is waiting with baited breath on potential word of a special session on insurance reform. Andrew Greenstein reports.

On September 28, 2024, Louisiana State Police responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash on Highway 146 near Public Boat Ramp Road. 31-year-old Jordan Burton crossed the centerline and collided with a 2014 Dodge Ram. The crash killed a 5-year-old child who was improperly restrained in the rear seat and severely injured a 10-year-old in the front passenger seat. Burton sustained severe injuries, and the Dodge driver had minor injuries. Impairment is suspected, and toxicology samples were taken. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending. Authorities stress the importance of proper vehicle restraints.

There’s the possibility of another named storm in the Gulf of Mexico this week. LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim says the National Hurricane Center is watching a disorganized area of low pressure in the western Caribbean Sea that has a medium chance of developing into at least a tropical depression. Keim says there’s the possibility this potential storm following a similar path as Hurricane Helene, but says it’s way too early to tell.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw for a career-high 409 yards in the Tigers 42-10 win over South Alabama on Saturday. Nussmeier threw two touchdown passes and had two rushing touchdowns. He also had two interceptions, the second one drew the ire of Coach Brian Kelly who got in the face of Nuss and let him know he made a poor decision. Garrett was fine with it…

The Tigers are off this Saturday and host Ole Miss on October 12th.

The ULM Warhawks are 3-and-1 for the first time since 2014 after going on the road and defeating two-time Sun Belt Conference Champion Troy 13 to 9. The only touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter on Ahmad Hardy’s one-yard touchdown run. Coach Bryant Vincent says his team is believing they can win anywhere…

The Warhawks will host undefeated James Madison on Sunday.

The Cajuns Ben Woolridge and Tulane’s Darian Mensah are two of eight FBS quarterbacks recognized by the Manning Award as  “Stars of the Week. Both threw for three touchdowns on Saturday as U-L defeated Wake Forest 41 to 38 and Tulane routed South Florida 45 to 10.

After knocking off Weber State for its third straight win, McNeese is ranked in the Top 25, 22nd in the STATS FCS Poll and 24th in the coaches poll.

Here we go again – we’re keeping an eye on the tropics for another potential storm. Jeff Palermo has the story…

A man was found dead, wrapped in a tarp along Highway 51 between the Village of Tangipahoa and Fluker, Louisiana, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO). Deputies discovered the body around 8 a.m. on Sunday. Authorities described the victim as having been “bludgeoned” before being abandoned on the roadside. The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident as a homicide and is seeking information from the public to help identify the victim and find those responsible. No further details have been released at this time.

An Incident Support Team (IST) and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams from Louisiana arrived last week. Baton Rouge Fire Chief Mike Kimble says some team members will work in the state’s Emergency Operations Center, and others will directly engage in rescue operations.

University Medical Center New Orleans is expanding its Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery, adding three new physicians and opening a new 16-bed Transitional Recovery Unit.

Center Director Dr. Michael Cook says the new unit aims to create a focused, supportive environment that promotes optimal recovery for patients.

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine acquires a new linear accelerator to provide more advanced radiation treatment for the treatment of cancer in pets. Ginger Guttner with the school says these new machines are tailored specifically for household pets.

Having the only place that has a linear accelerator on site, the hospital sees patients from across the state and beyond.

A tremendous honor for Centenary College. U.S. News and World Report has designated the private Shreveport school as a Top National Liberal Arts College. School President Dr. Christopher Holoman says the school has many things going for itself – things that graduating high school seniors look for in choosing a college to attend.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Saints – they’re in Kansas City a week from tonight for a Monday Night Football tilt with the two-time defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs.

University Medical Center New Orleans is expanding its Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery to meet the rising demand in the Greater New Orleans area. Dr. Michael Cook, the director of the Center for Weight loss and Bariatric Surgery, says it will allow it to provide more comprehensive care.

The expansion of the Center will see around one thousand patients annually.

LSU Vet school spokesperson Ginger Guttner says one of the benefits of this new technology is that the pets will be under anesthesia for a shorter period…

The LSU Vet school says radiation treatments can cost between two-thousand to nine thousand dollars, but most pet insurance covers it.

Cook says obesity can reduce life expectancy by up to 20 years if not treated, which is why bariatric services can be crucial to health and survival.

U-S News and World Report has designated Centenary College as a Top National Liberal Arts College in the U-S News and World Report rankings. School President Doctor Christopher Holoman says what sets Centenary apart is that the liberal arts program changes with the changing times.

New Orleans is now 2-and-2 and tied with the Falcons for second place in the NFC South. Tampa Bay is 3-and-1 after beating the Eagles yesterday.

 

LSU set the tone against South Alabama as early as early as can be, scoring on the first offensive play of the game and cruising to a 42-10 win at Death Valley. The opening score came on a 71-yard catch and run by freshman Caden Durham. Head Coach Brian Kelly says it was a great play call by Offensive Coordinator Joe Sloan.

Cut 16 (11)   “…hadn’t run before.”

Durham left the game with a foot injury, but Kelly says it’s not serious.

 

Louisiana Tech dropped its conference opener as the offense continues to struggle, despite the defense keeping them in games. FIU defeated the Bulldogs 17 to 10. But Coach Sonny Cumbie was encouraged by the play of quarterback Evan Bullock, who was making his first start. Bullock threw for 217 yards and Cumbie says he led the offense well…

Tech doesn’t play again until October 10th at home against Middle Tennessee.

It was a much better Saturday for several other Louisiana schools. ULM defeated Troy in its Sun Belt opener to improve to 3-and-1. U-L Lafayette took down a Power Four school as the Cajuns outscored Wake Forest 41 to 38. Ben Woolridge threw three touchdowns, two of them went to Lance Legendre.

McNeese upended 25th ranked Weber State 28 to 26 to improve to 4-and-2. Grambling lost in five overtime to Prairie View A-and-M. Tarleton State topped Southeastern Louisiana 36 to 33 and Southeast Missouri state blanked Northwestern State 19 to 0. Tulane trounced South Florida 45 to 10.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff deputies are trying to determine what happened to a man found bludgeoned to the death and wrapped up in tarp on the side of Highway 51 between the Village of Tangipahoa and Fluker. The victim’s body was found Sunday morning and no suspects have been identified.
