Legislation that would make it a crime to be within 25 feet of a working law enforcement officer who told the person to retreat or stop passed the full House in an 81-20 vote. Thibodaux Representative Bryan Fontenot, who is a former sheriff’s deputy, says he’s trying to protect officers with this bill…

The bill was approved last year but vetoed by then Governor John Bel Edwards.

Opponents raised concerns about constitutional rights and whether onlookers can still get good video of potential police misconduct. Fontenot says 25 feet is a sufficient distance.

If the bill becomes law, violators could face fines up to $500 and up to 60 days in jail. Fontenot says police officers never know if the person approaching needs help, has a question, or means them harm. He says this gives law enforcement a safe distance to react.

A bill to allow ivermectin, an anti-parasitic drug that made headlines during the pandemic, to be sold over the counter in Louisiana advances from House Health and Welfare. Gray Representative Beryl Amedee says it’s safe, effective, and virtually harmless for humans.

Amedee presented the bill for fellow Republican, Rosepine Representative Chuck Owen.

Kenner Representative Joseph Stagni expressed reservations about the state allowing ivermectin for humans to be sold over the counter versus a medical organization.

When asked if the medication manufacturers want the human version to be sold OTC, Amedee says while she hasn’t spoken with them, she felt they would be happy about it. She says other states allow it, for example, Tennessee, which has done so for two years.

The bill passed on a 7-4 vote and advances to the House.

Two women and a man were found fatally shot in a tent on a vacant lot next to railroad tracks in Jefferson Parish. Sheriff Joe Lopinto believes the victims may have died in the past day or two.

The area is located on the outskirts of a neighborhood and near an industrial storage business. Lopinto says deputies are unable to determine whether the killings are the results of a homicide or murder-suicide.

The victims names have not been released. No arrests have been made.

LSU forward, Angel Reese announcing her decision to declare for the WNBA draft late Wednesday morning in a Vogue profile piece, saying she’s done everything she wanted to in college and that her ultimate goal is to be a pro—and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever. Reese says she feels ready. Last month LSU Women’s basketball Coach Kim Mulkey said whatever she decided to do, Angel Reese has left her mark on LSU.

After the LSU Women’s basketball team missed the National Anthem because they were in the locker room for pre-game preparation and prayer, Governor Jeff Landry is suggesting a policy to take scholarships away from student-athletes who are not present for the national anthem. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Landry has been flexing his political muscle during his four months in office, but taking scholarships away from collegiate athletes might be too much…

Neville high school will begin their search for a new football head coach after Jeff Tannehill has resigned.

And the rematch of last year’s national championship between the Iowa Hawkeyes and LSU Lady Tigers is now the most-watched women’s college basketball game on record. The game averaged 12.3 million viewers which tops the largest audience for a men’s or women’s college basketball game on ESPN.

LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson is taking a no screens coaching approach in order to help the Tigers focus and play better baseball this season. College Baseball Analyst Ronnie Rantz says that this idea has the potential to really help players focus on the game.

Johnson says that he’ll keep the policy in place until his team improves.

And last night UL-Lafayette defeated Nicholls 13 to 3 to extend their winning streak to 12 games. The Ragin Cajuns saw a lot of offensive success in the game as Duncan Pastore had his first four-hit game this season, Kyle Debarge hit his ninth home run of the season, and John Taylor drove in three runs to extend his hit streak to seventeen games.

And in more baseball news around the state, both Louisiana Tech and Southeastern won their games in walk-off fashion as the Bulldogs defeated Little Rock and the Lions defeated Southern Miss both by a score of 7 to 6. Northwestern State defeated Grambling 4 to 1 and they will face ULM tonight at 6 pm.

While the LSU Women’s Basketball team was in the locker room for pre-game preparation and prayer before the game against Iowa but Governor Landry believes the team should have been on the floor for the national anthem. The Governor is suggesting a policy to take scholarships away from student-athletes who are not present for the national anthem. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the proposal is unconstitutional.

The House Transportation Committee approves a bill that would require speed enforcement cameras to get a picture of the driver of a speeding vehicle, along with the license plate. Marksville Representative Daryl Deshotel, not a fan of the speed enforcement cameras, says a real-life police officer are the ones that should be issuing tickets…

In Evangeline Parish, one man is committed to sleeping outside with his rescue dogs until enough money is raised to build a shelter. Brooke Thorington explains.

Chair of the state Republican Party Louis Gurvich is stepping down from his post effective Saturday. In a statement to the party, he thanked his staff and said it was time to make way for the next party chair.  Gurvich has been named executive director of the Louisiana Offshore Terminal Authority.

 

The sexual misconduct suit filed by 10 former students against LSU has been settled out of court. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says sometimes settlements are based on economic decisions and due to the sensitive nature of the case there’s also value in keeping the plaintiffs from having to relieve their trauma during a trial.

The settlement amount was not disclosed.

To raise money to build an animal shelter in Evangeline Parish, Matthew Baker, founder of Heros Everywhere Animal Rescue, has committed to sleeping outside with their 64 rescue dogs to raise $250,000. And once the facility is constructed, local veterinarians have also offered to volunteer their time to spay and neuter animals.

The Lincoln Parish Journal cites the City of Ruston and the Department of Transportation and Development will sign a memorandum of understanding next week that will clear the way for the start of the construction of a new Buc-ee’s. The city already has $5 million from the state, $6 million from the federal government, and city council approved $15 million to fund the construction of service roads, interchanges, etc. for the toothy beaver superstore.

Legislation has been filed for lawmakers to hold a constitutional convention and it would start May 20th, which would likely mean the regular session would have to end two weeks early. Senate President Cameron Henry says there are lawmakers who do not not want to rush into a constitutional convention…

The convention would run from May 20th to July 15th under the current proposal. Henry says legislators are also eager to get back to their full time jobs after already holding two special sessions this year.

The LSU-Iowa game goes down as the most watched women’s college basketball game in history. According to Nielsen data the Elite Eight matchup averaged 12-point-three million viewers. It surpasses the 11.8 million people who watched the 1983 championship game between USC and La Tech. That game featured Kim Mulkey versus Cheryl MIller.
