Former President Donald J. Trump has chosen Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio to be his running mate, betting the young senator will bring fresh energy to the Republican ticket and ensure that the movement Trump began nearly a decade ago can live on after him.

Chalmette Representative Michael Bayham speculates that the assassination attempt may have changed Trump’s choice for vice president. He says whereas before, Trump might have chosen the most likely candidate to help him win the election…

Trump was not seriously hurt in the assassination attempt, but two people were and one person was killed. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service. A motive has not yet been determined.

He went with his wife’s uncle, who had removed his hearing aids because they were near an overhead speaker, about 45 yards from the stage. While Hemker said it won’t deter him from ever attending a Trump rally again, the experience has changed him.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly spoke at SEC Media Days in Dallas this morning. The Tigers will look to replace quarterback and leading rusher Jayden Daniels as well as top two receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. Senior Kyren Lacy is expected to lead the Tigers receiving corps but Kelly says he expects a group effort…

After an unsuccessful assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump on Saturday, Republican delegates are gathering at the Republican National Convention this week to formally nominate him for president. Representative Michael Bayham of Chalmette says security at the RNC is tight.

Several Republicans have rallied behind Trump since the assassination attempt, such as Nikki Haley, who is expected to speak at the convention. Bayham says the assassination attempt has caused a lot of Republicans to reevaluate their priorities.

Simmons, who was once a student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, was known worldwide for his Sweatin to the Oldies aerobics videos.

Simmons, who got to be 200 pounds as a child, renamed himself Richard when he was ten years old to help improve his self-image. He moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s and developed an interest in fitness. He opened an exercise studio called the Anatomy Asylum and Shilstone says Simmons used mass media to turn himself into a fitness icon…

In the wake of an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, delegates are gathering at the Republican National Convention this week to formally nominate him for president. Mel Bridges has more.

An early morning house fire in the Houma area Saturday claimed the lives of five people and a sixth person survived. Among the victims were three adults, a teenager, and a toddler. The surviving victim is a teenager. The fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Tony Hemker of Virginia was among the attendees at the political rally Saturday where an attempt on Trump’s life was made. Hemker was about 45 yards away from the stage. He says it wasn’t until after the Secret Service yelled clear then he got back and up and saw Trump raise his fist into the air.

Baton Rouge Catholic High School right-handed pitcher Will Schmidt removed his name from the MLB Draft yesterday to play for LSU. Schmidt was expected to go as high as the top 15 picks and is ranked as the number one righty in high school baseball. He becomes the top-ranked high school prospect to ever come to Baton Rouge.

LSU third baseman Tommy White was selected by the Oakland Athletics 40th overall in the second round of the MLB Draft last night. The junior slugger finishes his collegiate career batting .355 with 75 homers and 249 RBI in 187 games.

LSU left-handed pitcher Gage Jump will be joining Tommy Tanks after being selected 73rd overall by the A’s. The redshirt sophomore posted a 3.47 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 83 innings for the Tigers this year after transferring from UCLA.

Tigers ace Luke Holman was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the 71st-overall pick. The junior righty posted a 2.75 ERA with 127 strikeouts in 91 innings this season. He’ll join No. 2 overall pick, Wake Forest pitcher Chase Burns with the Reds.

UL-Lafayette shortstop Kyle DeBarge was selected with the 33rd overall pick by the Minnesota Twins. Debarge was named the Cajuns’ second consensus All-American this year after batting .355 with 21 homers and 72 RBI and earning Sun-Belt Player of the Year honors. DeBarge becomes the highest-drafted player in the history of the Cajuns.

Authorities say they are looking at surveillance footage from neighbors and the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. The blaze happened in the 300 block of Louise Lane.

 

As the temperature continues to climb, motorists may encounter a disruption known as road buckling. Louisiana DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says road buckling is a normal thing that happens to concrete roads in heat. Debris and moisture fall into the joints of concrete roads over time, and when it gets hot…

With the rising summer temperatures, Louisiana drivers begin seeing road buckling. Louisiana DOTD spokesperson Erin Buchanan says unfortunately, it can happen suddenly and unexpectedly and there’s no way to prevent road buckles. If you encounter one while driving, she recommends reporting it to your regional DOTD as soon as it’s safe to do so.
