As work to restore power and clean up storm damage continues, The Louisiana Department of Health reports one storm related death in Rapides Parish. A 60-year-old woman was killed after a tree and power line fell on her home outside Pineville on Wednesday.

Many are still without power across the state. Entergy is working to restore approximately 4000 homes and the latest from CLECO shows almost 10,000 without power. We expect an updated number this afternoon.

After multiple delays with Federal Student Aid, the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance anticipates students can make changes to their applications if needed next week. LOSFA Spokesperson Ebony Holmes says students can register now for virtual help with their application on their website.

Monday is Tax Day. Alexandria CPA Kurt Oestriecher (Os-stric-ker) says for taxpayers looking to reduce their tax burden when they file, making a significant contribution to your 401k plan.

Monday day may be Tax Day but today, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival begins. The event, which has been going strong since 1972, is the state’s largest free harvest festival. Festival King Donald Lanier says they honor berry farmers across the state.

The Pelicans defeated Sacramento 135 to 123 last night. New Orleans made 22 three-pointers. CJ McCollum made nine threes and finished with 31 points. Zion Williamson also had 31 as the Pels remain in control of occupying the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs and avoid the play-in tournament. New Orleans is at Golden State tonight.

LSU coach Kim Mulkey gave an emotional speech at the team’s banquet last night. Mulkey says she’s emotional as the program has been in the headlines for a variety of reasons, including not being present for the national anthem before their Elite Eight loss to Iowa. And LSU has lost another player to transfer portal, Jenae Kent.

The LSU football team will conclude spring practice with a spring game on Saturday. Coach Brian Kelly is entering his third season in Tiger Town and he feels good about the talent and depth on the 2024 team. LSU struggled defensively last year as they tried to plug holes with incoming transfers. He says this year there’s more carryover from the 2023 squad…

The Saints have signed another back-up quarterback. Kellen Mond joins Q-B room that has Derek Carr, Jake Haener and Nathan Peterman. Mond is a former Texas A-and-M Aggie and was drafted by the Vikings in 2021. New Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak was the offensive coordinator Minnesota that season.

Cleco says crews restored power to 75-hundred of its customers in Slidell during the over night hours. But 75-hundred customers in Slidell continue to be without electricity. An EF-2 tornado hit Slidell on Wednesday. An EF-1 tornado was confirmed in St. Landry Parish and about two-thousand Cleco customers are without power in Opelousas.

RoyOMartin has announced it will invest more than 30-million dollars to modernize a timber manufacturing facility in Allen Parish. The National Weather Service has upgraded Wednesday’s tornado in Slidell to an E-F 2, with peak winds at 120 miles per hour. The worst damage occurred on Old Spanish Trail. St. Tammany parish President Mike Cooper says they are in the need of volunteers to help residents that suffered damage…

The House Labor Committee has voted against bills that would increase the state’s minimum wage to 10-dollars an hour. Even if Trump believes Cassidy is quote “A total flake” the Republican says he’s responsible for securing more federal funding for Louisiana than his counterparts.

That $1.2 billion includes $5.5 million for mental health and substance abuse services and $2.4 million for the New Orleans crime lab.

Cassidy also secured $28 million for the Morganza to the Gulf project, $12 million for water infrastructure, and $6 million for the Team Gleason ALS Foundation.

Ideally, Roe says, you want to break even on your taxes, so you don’t owe any more and aren’t receiving money back that you’ve loaned the government for the last year.

If you’re self-employed Roe says to talk to your accountant to see if you need to change your estimated taxes and if you work for a company talk to your human resources department about adjusting what’s taken out of your check on your W-9.

Roe says when you have big life changes like the birth of a child, marriage, or divorce you want to review the amount taken out of your paycheck.  And if you work multiple jobs, she says it can be complicated to determine how much tax should be withheld.
