Three arrests have been made in the shooting death of 20-year-old Steven Harris, the former Southern student who was reported missing on July 17th when he didn’t return for a custody hearing for his one-year-old son. His body was found in Mississippi days later. West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Brian Spillman says they believe the hearing played a role in his murder.

Phase 2 of the state’s SUN Bucks program that provides a one-time payment of 120-dollars to low-income families to help pay for groceries when children are out of school for the summer months begins this week. DCFS Economic Stability Director Timothy Jenkins says recipients include children who have Medicaid or are part of the FITAP or Kinship Care Subsidy Program.

The Saints began training camp yesterday as they prepare for the 2024 season. Linebacker Demario Davis has been an All-Pro and leader on one of the NFL’s top defenses since he arrived in New Orleans in 2017, but at 35-years-old some fans question how long he can be one of the league’s top defenders. Davis says humility has been key to his longevity…

Training camp at UC-Irvine is closed to the public this year, but the Saints will be hosting open practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium August 20th at 7 PM. Tickets go on sale Tuesday July 30th.

Undrafted rookie defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat was carted off with an elbow injury at practice today. The Arkansas and Missouri product had a good shot of making the team and adding depth to a shallow defensive-line room. The severity of the injury is not yet known.

West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Brian Spillman says the mother of 20-year-old Steven Harris’s son has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of the former Southern University student. Harris was reported missing on July 17th when he didn’t return for a custody hearing for his one-and-a-half-year-old son. His body was found in Mississippi on Tuesday. 21-year-old Allyah Martin, along with 20-year-old Calajia (Cah-lie-ah) Jack (F) and 21-year-old Derek Terrell Hollins face a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Martin, Jack, and Hollins allegedly lured Harris to a party but took him to Wilkinson County. Spillman expects the three to be charged with murder in Mississippi.

Phase Two of the Sun Bucks program begins issuing benefits this week.  The federal money goes to low-income families to cover increased summer time food costs. DCFS Economic Stability Director Timothy Jenkins says 75-thousand EBT cards will go out each week

Due to limited resources at Glenwood, the state forced the facility to operate at one-third of its capacity, which has put a strain on hospitals across the river in Monroe. Cassidy says Steward’s financial mismanagement has had deadly consequences.

What happened at Glenwood is not unique. Cassidy says at a Steward-owned hospital in Massachusetts, a woman died after giving birth…

In June the committee asked de la Torre to testify, but he refused, didn’t offer another date, or have another Steward Health representative appear. Cassidy says this has forced the committee to subpoena him.

Glenwood is one of 31 Steward hospitals across the country.

A hearing is set for July 31st for Steward’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and American Healthcare Systems’ bid to be the new owner of Glenwood.

Governor Jeff Landry pushed for a constitutional convention this year. Landry says the convention could lead to positive tax reform that would give state lawmakers more flexibility during tough financial times. But Alford says making major changes to a state constitution is a huge endeavor.

The state will see a reduction of 600-million dollars in state revenue starting next fiscal year when a temporary state sales tax expires on July 1st, 2025. Alford says changes to the constitution could be needed to respond to this potential budget deficit, but legislative leaders are not ready to hold a constitutional convention…

Three people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of missing former Southern University student, Steven Harris IV whose body was found Tuesday in Wilkinson County Mississippi.  West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s made the arrests.  21-year-old Derek Terrell Hollins, and Jr., 20-year-old Calajia Jack, of St. Francisville, and 21-year-old Allyah Martin of Zachary face charges of conspiracy to commit first degree murder. Hollins also faces a charge of possession of a machine gun. Harris was reported missing by his family on July 17.

Starting last December, law enforcement began enforcing a ban on big rigs on the Interstate 20 construction zone in Bossier City. Louisiana Department of Transportation spokesperson Erin Buchanan says during that time 35-hundred citations have been handed out to truck drivers who continue to drive through that work zone. DOTD recommends truck drivers use I-220, which will add only 15 minutes to their drive time.

The Ten Commandments are to be displayed in every public-school classroom starting January first. Saints running back Alvin Kamara is seeking a new contract, but does not plan on holding out during training camp. Kamara is signed through the 2025 season, but next year’s money is not guaranteed. If you like flying Southwest Airlines out of New Orleans, Houston, Dallas or Jackson, Mississippi, the airline announced today it will soon begin assigning seats to passengers instead of having open seating. The Dallas-based carrier says 80-percent of its customers prefer assigned seats. An end date for open seating has not been announced.
