A teenage girl is dead in a crash in Lafayette. Police Sergeant Matthew Benoit (BEN-wah) says this happened early yesterday morning.

Benoit notes that while investigators have established that the vehicle was stolen, it’s unclear whether that 14-year-old driver was the one who stole it. The girl who died is identified as 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette. She was riding in the back seat.

Tragic news out of Brusly, the 4-year-old son of Brusly City Council Member, Blake Tassin was killed when the young child shot and killed himself with a gun found in the console of a pick-up truck Sunday morning. Young Hudson Tassin found the found the gun, according to the West Baton Rouge parish Sheriff’s office when an adult stepped out of the truck to adjust a trailer. Authorities have turned over the results of their investigation to the district attorney.

In Terrebonne Parish a raccoon knocked out power. It’s the second time in as many weeks and this Sunday, six-thousand customers lost power after a raccoon ended up in the Eddison power substation in Houma. Parish President Jason Bergeron (BAA-zher-on) says unfortunately, there’s little if anything that can be done about animals getting into the substation.

Bergeron says this comes as the parish continues repairing powerlines damaged by Hurricane Ida.

A teenage girl is dead in a crash in Lafayette, and police say a 14-year-old boy was behind the wheel. The victim is identified as 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette. Two others were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police Sergeant Matthew Benoit (BEN-wah) says the driver tried to escape but didn’t get very far.

Benoit says the vehicle was stolen, although it’s unclear whether the 14-year-old boy was the actual thief.

Six-thousand customers went in the dark Sunday after a raccoon ended up in the Eddison power substation in Houma. Parish President Jason Bergeron (BAA-zher-on) says he drove to the substation to check things out for himself.

An 18-year-old Grayson man is arrested for allegedly strangling a spotted fawn. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Taryn Varnell was captured on video taking the deer and choking it to death. Varnell faces up to ten years in prison and fines of more than 25-thousand dollars if convicted.

Could Alvin Kamara be on his way out of New Orleans? The Saints’ star running back has listed his Belle Chasse home for 2.75-million dollars. This, as Kamara and the Saints remain deadlocked on a new deal.

Nicholls linebacker Eli Ennis has been named the Southland Defensive Player of the Week. Ennis had ten tackles in a loss to Louisiana Tech and also had an interception and fumble recovery.

The first high school football polls are out…Ruston, Opelousas, University High, Calvary Baptist and Southern Lab are ranked number one.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has his five-bedroom, nine bathroom house in Belle Chasse on the market. Kamara says it has nothing to do with his desire for a new contract with the Saints that has yet to happen. The 29-year-old Kamara is entering his eighth season and he says he feels good about the offense with first year offensive coordinator Kilnt Kubiak.

 

Former LSU and Rummel Raider star receiver Ja’Marr Chase continues to wait on a new mega contract from the Bengals. He’s listed as the starting receiver on the team’s depth chart, even though he didn’t practice yesterday. Coach Zac Taylor calls it a fluid situation.

A teenage girl is dead in a crash in Lafayette. Police Sergeant Matthew Benoit says there were six juveniles and an adult in a stolen vehicle being driven by a 14-year-old boy.

The girl who died is identified as 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette. The 14-year-old boy tried running off but was caught and is now in juvenile detention facing four charges.

A former city councilman in Minden, in Webster Parish, and his daughter are shot dead, and the suspect is a ten-year-old boy. 82-year-old Joe Cornelius and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were found dead inside their home. Minden Police Chief Jared McIver says there were two juveniles inside the home at the time.

Chief McIver says the investigation ruled out any notion that this was an accidental shooting. He says the boy confessed and is in custody.

Knock on wood – but so far, it’s been a very quiet hurricane season here in Louisiana. LSU Climatologist Barry Keim says, though, we’re not out of the woods just yet. He says we’re currently in LaNina conditions, and that’s expected to build in the latter part of hurricane season.

For the first time in several years, the state is looking at a budget deficit in several years. The projected shortfall is 340-million dollars. House Appropriations Chairman Jack McFarland says the committee will hold several hearings over the next few months to discuss the shortfall.

Lafayette Police say a juvenile driver drove off the road early Monday striking a fence, which caused the vehicle to flip and strike a tree. There were seven people inside the vehicle. 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette has died, and two other passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The juvenile driver faces several charges including one count of negligent homicide.

For the fifth straight year, the LSU Tigers are starting the season off with a loss. In Sunday night’s 27-20 defeat to USC, the Tigers were penalized ten times. Two of the penalties were 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalties, on Kyren Lacy and Major Burns that helped USC score touchdowns. Coach Brian Kelly says mistakes like that can’t happen…
