Speaking of new things, Buc-ee’s is coming to Lafayette in 2026.  They’ll be opining a store along 1-10 there sometime early that year.  Mandi Mitchell, the president and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, says along with dozens of new jobs Buc-ee’s brings a golden opportunity to market Lafayette.

Barring an injunction from an appellate judge, most school districts in the state will be given the green light to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms starting on January 1st. Attorney General Liz Murrill says while Judge John DeGravelles blocked the law on constitutional grounds, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals limited the scope of his ruling,

Buc-ee’s is coming to south Louisiana.  The longtime Texas staple is headed to Lafayette sometime in early 2026.  President and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development authority Mandi Mitchell says it’ll bring lots of jobs and a big presence along I-10.

Enhanced seat belt warnings are coming soon in all new vehicles in the U.S. Under new NHTSA (NIT-sa) rules, all new vehicles will come equipped with enhanced seat belt warnings for front-seat occupants by September of 2026; and seat belt warnings for rear-seat passengers will come one year later. Greg Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, says people here are already buckling up.

The LSU Tigers have signed one of the top wide receivers in the transfer portal. Big bodied Nic Anderson is heading to Baton Rouge after two seasons with Oklahoma. He missed nearly all of the 2024 season because of injury, but the six-foot-three wide out had 38 catches for 798 yards and ten touchdowns as a freshman.

The LSU Tigers also signed edge rusher Jack Pyburn from Florida. Pyburn is the Gators second leading tackler this season and was an emotional leader. Mark McLeod, host of Blitz Sports Radio in Florida, says Pyburn leaving the Gators was a surprise…

Pyburn had 60 tackles, an interception and a sack for the Gators in 2024.

 

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports it’s unlikely Saints quarterback Derek Carr will return this season. Carr fractured his left hand in two places in Week 15 and underwent further examination recently and it doesn’t look like he can return before the regular season ends.

 

The fifth ranked LSU Lady Tigers remained undefeated last night with a solid 91 to 64 win over Seton Hall in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase in Connecticut. Aneesah Morrow had 24 points and 19 rebounds and Mikaylah Williams made six three-pointers and finished with 22.

 

LSU men’s basketball clobbered Stetson 99 to 53. The Hatters only had 10 points at halftime. That’s the fewest points allowed by LSU in a half since 1959. Five Tigers were in double figures led by Cam Carter who had 16 points.

 

ULM fell at home to Houston Christian 74 to 68, despite 21 points by Jalen Bolen. And 17th ranked Ole Miss beat Southern 74 to 61.

Using statistics from last year, Fischer says for many years, seat belts have been proven to save lives.

Big problems on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway as at least 40 vehicles are involved in six separate crashes this morning. Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechau says visibility dropped to nearly zero.

Dufrechou says no one went over the rail and into the water, and all stranded vehicles made it off the Causeway. 33 people are hospitalized, none of them with life-threatening injuries.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry has confirmed a case of bird flu in Bossier Parish. Commissioner Mike Strain says the long-term outbreak has been going on for almost three years.

Strain says wild geese and ducks are bringing the virus into Louisiana. He says if you see a sick duck or goose, do not touch it and keep it out of contact with your domestic birds.

Chronic absenteeism in Louisiana schools continues to be on the rise. In the 2023-24 school year, chronic absenteeism grew three points to almost 25-percent. It’s the second year in a row that the rate increased. BESE President Ronnie Morris says that includes truancy, which is a huge problem across the state.

Morris says solutions include making school fun again, including opportunities for kids to do hands-on activities such as robotics and music.

As expected, at the meeting of the Louisiana Electoral College at the State Capitol, all eight electors cast their ballots for Donald Trump for President and J.D. Vance for Vice President. Voters overwhelmingly chose the electors during the election last month. It’s a scene that played out in all 50 states today, as electors formally elected Trump and Vance. Congress will certify the vote in a joint session on January 6th.

BESE President Ronnie Morris says one factor that’s likely contributing to the problem is the fact that many students can’t read at grade level.

In Bossier Parish, bird flu has been found with a backyard flock. Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says wild geese and ducks are bringing the virus into Louisiana. He says the key for all poultry producers is biosecurity.

Strain says the infected birds have been euthanized and the facility has been cleaned up.

About one in four Louisiana students was chronically absent last school year, an increase from the previous year. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is looking at ways to reduce chronic absenteeism and BESE President Ronnie Morris says solutions include making school fun again, including opportunities for kids to do hands-on activities such as robotics and music. Another idea is to open up internship opportunities to high school kids.

Office of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Dan Casey says yesterday’s system outage that prevented O-M-V from conducting any transactions is the result of a computer software system that’s 50-years-old. Casey says in the coming days, OMV will announce a modern solution to replace the aging system.
