The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana is forecasting the state to turn a deficit into a surplus for the next fiscal year.  PAR President Steven Procopio says the changes in the tax code going into effect are expected to erase a 400-million-dollar budget deficit for the new fiscal year that begins in July. Procopio says a lot of that added revenue comes from the increase in the state sales tax.

The Social Security fairness act has passed in the Senate. Co Sponsored by Louisiana Republican Congressman Garrett Graves, the House passed the measure back in early November.  And this week, Senator Bill Cassidy, and 72 other Senators invoked  “cloture” which forced the Senate to limit debate.  It sailed past the Senate by a vote of 76 to 20.  It heads next to the White House.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is preparing to lead the LSU Tigers in the Texas Bowl as the Bayou Bengals will battle Baylor. Nussmeier met with the media yesterday and talked about his decision to come back for a fifth season…

Disappointing end to the season for the Tulane Green Wave as Florida beat the Greenies 33 to 8 in the Gasparilla Bowl.

ULM Coach Keith Richard (Ree-shard) will retire at the end of the of the season. Richard, who is a former player at the school, has been the Warhawks head coach for 15 seasons and led the school to four postseason appearances.

Tomorrow, LSU men’s basketball will host UNO. The Tigers are 9-and-2 while the Privateers are two and eight.

Marlin was fired yesterday during the middle of his 15th season for the Cajuns. Maggard says he spoke with Marlin earlier this week and told him he would have the opportunity to coach the team the rest of the season, but the school would announce this week that he’s retiring…

ULM men’s basketball coach Keith Richard is retiring at the end of the season. The Warhawks announced today that this will be Richard’s last season. He’s a former player, an assistant coach and he’s been the head coach at ULM since 2010.

ULM says head football coach Bryant Vincent has agreed to new salary terms and Warhawk athletics are increasing the football coaching staff salary pool.

As coach Richard lead the Warhawks to a total of four postseason appearances. This is his 40th season coaching and his 15th as head coach of ULM Men’s basketball.

Procopio cautions, however, that this is all speculative.
