The US Coast Guard is investigating a multi-vessel collision that happened last night on the Mississippi River near Gretna which caused some oil to be spilled into the water. Spokesman Jonathan Lally says a ship carrying grains lost power and control and crashed into another vessel and barge that was fueling up…

Lally says about 588 gallons of marine grade fuel was spilled into the river. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The New Orleans Police Department is still searching for the gunman who opened fire on a house in the Lower Ninth Ward that killed two and injured five, including two young children. 33-year-old Terrance McBride and 16-year-old Jasmine Anderson were killed in the shooting. Police Chief Ronal Serpas says McBride was a felon in possession of a firearm facing charges on that plus distribution of heroin. He says this case does not appear to be a gang member involved event…

Today is the Saints final full practice day at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Coach Sean Payton says their time away from New Orleans has been productive and they’ve enjoyed their stay in White Sulphur Springs…

Payton says they’ll definitely be back to the Greenbrier the next two years and probably longer than.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees participated in individual drills, but did not take any snaps during the full-team drills. Payton says they haven’t decided if Brees will play Friday against the Titans.

The LSU football team holds its first scrimmage of preseason camp today. Depending on what Coach Les Miles says after the scrimmage, we could get a better idea on who is leading the race for starting quarterback. Q-B Anthony Jennings says he embraces the competition with Brandon Harris…

In Ruston, protecting the football has been an emphasis during Louisiana Tech’s preseason camp. Last year, the Bulldogs had 29 turnovers and Coach Skip Holtz says they are doing a much better job when it comes to limiting turnovers in practice.

Former LSU pitcher Anthony Ranaudo is on the mound for the Boston Red Sox. The world champs are hosting the Reds. This is Ranaudo’s second major league start, he one his first over the Yankees.

Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the fifth district congressional race will have a large field as challengers see Vance McAllister as a vulnerable incumbent because he was caught kissing a married staffer…

State Climatologist Barry Keim says northerly breezes have moved into Louisiana causing humidity levels to drop dramatically. He says we’ve been seeing this pattern set up this year over the eastern United States that’s causing the humidity to push down into the Gulf of Mexico…

Keim says this blast of Canadian air isn’t dropping temperatures all that much, but it’s brought a noticeable drop in the humidity.

The recent death of actor-comedian Robin Williams has opened a discussion about suicide across the country. LSU Mental Health expert, Dr. Howard Osofsky, says, after a suicide, family and friends are often left wondering if they could have done something to prevent it. He says if you notice a loved one’s behavior drastically changing, you may want to seek help…

Osofsky says treatment does not mean one can definitely prevent suicide, but it can help.

A ship carrying grain lost power and struck a docked vessel, causing that vessel to leak oil. Jefferson Parish officials say there is no concern for the water supply. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a 623-foot-long bulk freighter lost power and steering control and crashed into an oil tanker and a barge early this morning in Gretna. The say a vessel carrying grains acted up near the Gretna ferry landing and struck another vessel that was fueling up. They say some oil spilled into the river but there is no threat to water supply. The incident is under investigation.

Pinsonat says the fifth district congressional race will also have a large field as challengers see Vance McAllister as a vulnerable incumbent because of his kissing scandal earlier this year.

According to figures from the World Trade Center of New Orleans, Louisiana exports are up 9.3 percent during the first half of the year. That’s to $32.1 billion. This keeps Louisiana in 6th place in the US in exports having accounted for 3.6 percent of the $804 billion nationwide through midyear.

NOPD is asking for the public’s help in locating the gunman who were in a vehicle when they opened fire on a house in the 9th ward over the weekend. The shooting killed 2 and injured 5 including two young children. Police Chief Ronal Serpas says they now believe they know who was in the vehicle with the shooter…:

The politically-heated dispute over Louisiana’s use of the Common Core education standards was heard in a state district courtroom Tuesday. The case involves a lawsuit filed by parents and teachers who support Common Core and accuse the governor of violating the state Constitution in his actions against the multi-state standards. Judge Todd Hernandez will rule on the motions after he weighs out everything. No date was given on when a ruling is expected.

Fans at Saints practice on Tuesday at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia were thrilled when they saw Saints Quarterback Drew Brees back in pads for the first time since suffering an oblique strain…but #9 still sat out of practice. It’s a good sign though he’s close to returning but there’s still not a good chance he will play in Friday’s preseason game against the Titans. Saints coach Sean Payton says it appears Brees is progressing well. Veteran cornerback Champ Bailey was also back in pads but was held out of on-the-field work with the team.

Also in the NFL, former LSU standout Tyrann Mathieu could be close to coming off the physically unable to perform list said Arizona Cardinals Coach Bruce Arians on Tuesday. The Honey Badger tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee in the game against St. Louis December 8th. Mathieu has been working out and says he’s confident his knee is better.

Southeastern Conference Fans are excited about the new network which will launch tomorrow. The SEC network says there will be more than 1,000 live events aired just this year alone. Each of the 14 SEC representatives must have some sort of studio in place for live interviews which are said to be as high quality as anything you’d see on ESPN.

The SEC officie announced Tuesday that the LSU men’s basketball team’s game against West Virginia on December 4th in the Southeastern Conference-Big 12 Challenge will tip off at 6pm on ESPN 2. Last week LSU revealed its non-conference schedule and dates, times and networks for the SEC portion of the schedule are expected to be released soon.

The full NBA schedule will be released today at 5pm.

According to Louisiana Oyster Task Force Chairman John Tesvich, since the BP spill, oyster production along Louisiana’s coast has reached lows that have not been seen in decades. Last year, just under a million pounds of oyster meat was produced and Tesvich says early numbers for this year are only slightly better…

Prior to the BP spill, Louisiana public reefs would produce three to seven million pounds of oyster meat a year. As of now, there is no scientific evidence citing the oil spill as the sole factor for the decline in oyster populations.

Jefferson Parish President John Young announces he’s running for Lt. Governor in 2015. Young joins previously announced candidates Baton Rouge Mayor President Kip Holden and Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser. Young says he wants to be an ambassador for economic development and the film industry…

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office says a teenage girl is under arrest for allegedly stealing a pizza delivery guy’s car. Spokesman Glenn Springfield says when 17-year-old Shaquillea Hunter of Monroe was questioned about the incident, she told the deputy to just take her to jail. Springfield says Hunter was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center…

A BESE board committee has voted down a proposal to eliminate Common Core from Louisiana public schools. A bid to use LEAP and iLLEAP exams in the current school year was rejected by a 3 to 6 vote. Although this was technically a committee vote, all but two board members voted.

In addition to the big super-moon we’ve got in the sky right now, the most explosive meteor shower of the year is underway. Lee Sawyer, Director of Chemistry and Physics at Louisiana Tech University, says we’re approaching the peak of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. Sawyer says if you’d like to see some beautiful shooting stars, early tomorrow morning, when it’s still dark out, would be the best time…
