State Police report a 73-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on US 61 in St. Francisville. They say Felix Lipoma of Gonzales was pulling out of a driveway when his truck collided with a passing 18-wheeler. Lipoma’s truck flipped several times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Ascension Parish Deputies have arrested the man wanted in the shooting injury of a fellow deputy. Authorities say the deputy stopped a vehicle when responding to a shoplifting complaint when the suspect, 35-year-old John McMullen opened fire and shot the cop in the hand. McMullen faces many charges and he’s also wanted in Florida on charges including first degree murder.

The state is set to begin accepting proposals on alternative ways to get rid of the 15 million pounds of explosive material at Camp Minden. Louisiana Progress Action spokeswoman Frances Kelley says with all of the uncertainties surrounding an open burn of the material, officials should look at other solutions to the problem…:

The Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s office has arrested an Elton High School teacher for allegedly molesting a student. Authorities say they were contacted by school officials after they received a report of an inappropriate relationship between Justin Fruge and a student. After an investigation, Fruge was arrested on two counts of molestation of a juvenile.

Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany calls the tax increases a re-distribution of wealth through increased spending. Boustany says he wants a tax code that is fair, simplified, and lowers rates to help grow the economy…

The President’s plan would raise the capital gains tax on top-earning Americans, eliminate the current tax break on inheritances, and raise taxes on big banks.

An Arnaudville man was arrested accused of stealing more than $36,000 from his elderly grandmother. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department says Martin Thibodeaux made 34 unauthorized withdrawals from the woman’s bank account. The woman’s safety deposit box, which had an unknown amount of money inside, was found empty as well. Thibodeaux is charged with financial exploitation of the elderly.

After the child’s father brought him to the ER, medical staff observed signs of torture on the 5-year-old while treating him for burns to his hands and torso. After an investigation, authorities arrested 26-year-old Jessica Deville of Opelousas on a charge of cruelty of a juvenile.

The Saints have reportedly added former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to their front office. Based on reports, Ireland will handle college scouting. The Saints fired Director of College Scouting Rick Reiprish, yesterday. There’s also been an addition to the coaching staff, based on media reports. Dennis Allen will serve as an assistant on defense, working with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Allen was with the Saints from 2006 to 2010. He left to become the Broncos defensive coordinator and served as a head coach for the Raiders in 2011.

And one other Black and Gold note, running back Mark Ingram has been added to the Pro Bowl roster. Ingram takes the place of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.

LSU announces that all 56 regular season baseball games can viewed on either SEC Network-plus, which is on the internet, or on ESPN’s family of TV channels. That includes ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN-U and the SEC Network. Seven games are also set to appear on C-S-T.

Jordan Mickey’s double-double helped propel LSU past Florida 79-61 in Gainesville. Mickey scored 14 points and pulled down 10 boards in the win. Jarell Martin lead all scorers with 22. The Tigers are now 14-4 and 3-2 league record has them sitting in a tie for third in the SEC. LSU heads to Nashville Saturday for a matchup with Vanderbilt.

It was a busy night in the Southland Conference. Another double-double performance, this one by John Jordan to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over Northwestern State 88-76. Jordan had 22 points and 11 assists as the Islanders have now won five of their last six. Northwestern guard Zeke Woodley lead all scorers with 24. The Demons are 3-3 in conference play and will host McNeese St. Saturday.

Speaking of the Cowboys, they picked up their first Southland Conference win last night when they upended Abilene Christian 63-56. Desharick Guidry lead McNeese with 21 points and 16 rebounds. The Cowboys improve to 7-9 on the season.

And Sam Houston remains perfect in conference play after a 62-39 shellacking of Nicholls State.

Governor Bobby Jindal is getting national attention after giving a speech in England where he claimed Muslim “no-go zones” exist in Europe. “No-go zones” are areas that have been allegedly taken over by radical Islamists where police are less likely to go in to enforce the country’s laws. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says it’s bewildering that Jindal continues to insist these “no-go zones” exist…

Stockley says if Jindal is trying to bolster his foreign policy leading up to a presidential run, this is not the way to do it. Jindal is expected to announce his candidacy for president in the next few weeks.

State Police report that a fourth person has now died as a result of a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Natchitoches Parish over the weekend. Authorities learned that 10-year-old Kaylee West of Montgomery succumbed to her injuries earlier today. Three others, including two juveniles, were injured in the crash.

The US Supreme Court refuses to take up a Baton Rouge case that questions whether a priest should report allegations of sex abuse against a minor. The Diocese of Baton Rouge asked the nation’s highest court to review the case, after the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that priests should be subject to mandatory reporting laws. The Department of Revenue says it will begin accepting income tax returns tomorrow, and begin processing those returns February 3rd for refunds as early as February 24th. After the 24th, electronic filers can expect refunds in up to 21 days, and for paper, it’s 8 to 10 weeks.
