According to the Annie B. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Data Book, Louisiana ranks among the worst in the country in terms of the well-being of children. The Bayou State ranks 47th among all states and the District of Columbia. The report contributes Louisiana’s poor showing to children who live in poverty and single parent homes whose situation deteriorated from previous reports.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says they’ve arrested a Golden Meadow Police officer in connection with a methamphetamine investigation. Spokesman Brennan Matherne says they began conducting this investigation in April…

Opponents of Common Core have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to keep the state from adopting the controversial education standards. 17 state lawmakers are banding together under the name “The Concerned Citizens of Louisiana” to challenge the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education’s adoption of Common Core on procedural grounds. Authorities announce the arrest of a Lafayette man who allegedly called in a bomb threat that resulted in the evacuation of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus last week. The thousands of unaccompanied children crossing over into neighboring Texas is raising concerns Louisiana may face an immigration problem of its own. The tens of thousands of children crossing the border into the US are being driven, in large part, out of their Central American homes by escalating violence related to gang warfare and drugs. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges, a member of the House Committee on Criminal Justice, says she is concerned that the immigrants may be bringing that violence with them…

Louisiana State Police says they’ve got someone in custody who is considered a suspect in the case of the bomb threat that was called in to UL-Lafayette last week. Earlier reports indicate it’s the same person that was accused in a robbery that same day but official details will be released by the FBI this morning.

The National Hurricane Center says a tropical depression which formed over the Atlantic on Monday continued to move west this morning. they say at 4am, Depression No. 2 is east of Lesser Antilles. Little change is expected today and weakening is forecast by tomorrow night. Forecasters believe this depression will lose tropical characteristics by Thursday.

State Police say a husband and wife died in a two vehicle crash Monday in LaSalle Parish. They say 72-year-old Margie Moore and 83-year-old Bluith Moore rear-ended a car on LA Hwy 28 yesterday and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car and 8-year-old passenger were treated for moderate injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department says they’ve arrested a 75-year-old man in connection with the stabbing death of his long-time female companion in Treme over the weekend. They say the 58-year-old woman’s body was found in the street Sunday morning and she’d suffered multiple stab wounds. Tom Gibson is charged with second degree murder.

According to KLFY, authorities believe they have the person responsible for calling in the UL-Lafayette bomb threat last week. The suspect’s name is not being released at this time. The FBI is expected to issue a statement today.

The owner of a bar in Nashville told a local newspaper that former LSU Quarterback Zach Mettenberger was sucker punched by an Alabama fan. Steve Ford apparently told the newspaper that Mett was not provoking the person in any way but that the guy said “Roll Tide” and Zach said, “Good Luck with that” – that’s when the other person’s friend sucker punched the Titans draftee in the eye.

A lawsuit has been filed by 17 lawmakers challenging the methods the state used to adopt the Common Core education standards. The suit alleges the BESE board and the State Department of Education did not follow the Administrative Procedure Act. Meanwhile, the stand-off over Common Core between Governor Bobby Jindal and State Superintendent of Education John White continues.

Republican US Senator David Vitter files legislation that he says will stop the flow of illegal border crossings. Vitter’s measure would implement mandatory detention near the US-Mexico border and expedited deportation of unaccompanied minors from Central and South America…

Alcohol and Tobacco Control Commissioner Troy Hebert is facing a federal racial discrimination lawsuit alleging he made working conditions unbearable for African-American employees. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Charles Gilmore, Damian McDowell, and Larry Hingle. Hebert says it is not a secret he inherited a troubled agency with problem employees, but he’s very proud of the way they’ve turned things around…

The Monroe Police Department says they are looking for a man they believe is responsible for hitting another man over the head with a large stick during an argument over a cell phone. Assistant Police Chief Don Bartley says the victim was walking out of the laundry room at an apartment complex when he was approached by 20-year-old Christopher Robinson…

The victim, 48-year-old Jimmy Atwell, passed away from injuries sustained in the incident. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Robinson on second degree murder charges and bond has been set at $500,000. Robinson is still at-large.

It was a violent weekend in the Crescent City as police report a total of nine people are recovering from gunshot wounds throughout the metro area. New Orleans Police say the gun violence ranged from New Orleans East to South Carrolton in broad daylight. While the city’s murder rate is down from last year, New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas says it’s clear that NOPD needs more police officers.
