The federal government begins issuing refund checks to homeowners who overpaid for their insurance premiums. Refunds will go to those residents who purchased or renewed coverage after 2012 and paid higher premiums, until Congress passed another law to re-adjust flood insurance rates. The federal government estimates that about one-million policyholders nationwide will receive refunds that average one-hundred dollars.

Mike Glennon is expected to start at quarterback when Tampa Bay visits the Saints on Sunday. Glennon is filling in for Josh McCown, who has a thumb injury. Glennon was at the helm when the Bucs came from behind to beat Pittsburgh last weekend. He said today he expects to see a lot of different blitzes this Sunday.

Training camp is underway for the New Orleans Pelicans and Ryan Anderson is back on the court. Anderson had surgery to repair two herniated discs in his neck after a he was involved in a colision on the court against Boston last January. Anderson says he feels good and Coach Monty Williams says point guard Jrue Holiday also looked good after suffering a stress fracture in his right tibia last January.

Former Cajuns basketball star Roy Ebron has passed away. Ebron was a three-year letterwinner for head coach Beryl Shipley from 1970-73 and helped lead the Ragin Cajuns to two straight NCAA Division One Tournament appearances. He’s still the school’s all-time leading rebounder.

It will be a busy weekend on the Louisiana Tech campus. Of course the highlight is the Bulldogs home football game against UTEP on Saturday night. But there’s also the baseball team holding intra-squad scrimmages tomorrow through Saturday and the Tech basketball team officially opens team workouts on Friday.

Another statewide poll on the US Senate race has been released that shows Congressman Bill Cassidy leading Senator Mary Landrieu in a possible December runoff election. Jeff Palermo has the story..:

Amidst the news out of Dallas reporting the first confirmed case of Ebola in the United States, Governor Bobby Jindal is taking action to ensure Louisiana isn’t at risk but is ready for any potential threat. Jindal and GOHSEP held a meeting today to get an update from state agencies to make sure the state is prepared if a case of the life threatening disease were to be present here.

An Amite cop is under arrest on charges including rape and kidnapping according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office. Spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto says two different women came forward over the last two months to report a man kidnapped them and forced them into sex acts. An investigation lead to the arrest of 25-year-old Grant Carruth. Panepinto says you should contact authorities if you know of a similar case…:

Today’s October 1st and so far in 2014 we’ve basically had an uneventful hurricane season. But state climatologist Barry Keim says we’re not out of the woods just yet. He says although we are past the peak of hurricane season, October can still be a pretty active month:

A Destrehan High School teacher has been arrested accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old male student. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Shelly Dufresne is charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Kenner Police is expected to arrest a second teacher, Rachel Respess, who is alleged to also be in an inappropriate relationship with the student.

The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reports a Campti couple died last night after their mobile home caught on fire. Florence Berguin and John Berguin, both 68, were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were the mother and step-father of Campti Police Chief Greg Eldridge.

True freshman Brandon Harris will start at quarterback for LSU against Auburn and expect him to target another true freshman, Malachi Dupre. In his last two games, Dupre has caught seven passes, three of them were touchdowns. The six-foot-three wideout from New Orleans believes he’s getting better every week…

The Tampa Bay Times says Mike Glennon will likely start at quarterback for the Buccaneers in Sunday’s game against New Orleans. Glennon is getting a chance to start, because Josh McCown, the Bucs normal starting Q-B, has an injured thumb. Glennon led Tampa Bay to an impressive come from behind win over Pittsburgh last Sunday.

Several Louisiana college football teams will play at home this Saturday. The Ragin Cajuns will host Georgia State, who U-L Lafayette beat 35-21 last season. The Panthers were winless last season, but Coach Mark Hudspeth says they have a much better team this year…

According to a recent Public Policy Poll, 78-percent of Louisiana voters oppose sentences longer than six months for marijuana possession, up from 59-percent last year. Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Marjorie Esman believes numbers are up because people are starting to realize Louisiana is out of sync with the rest of the country on this issue…

A state judge has ruled a Metairie man, who spent 17 years in prison for an attempted rape he did not commit, is entitled to up to $330,000 in compensation. Innocence Project New Orleans attorney Kristin Wenstrom says this money doesn’t make up for 17 years of wrongful incarceration, but it will help 40-year-old Nathan Brown restart his life…

Brown was released from prison in June after DNA tests proved his innocence.

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell says many Entergy Customers will soon receive a small refund after they were victorious in a fight to expose inflated bills. Campbell says it’s the PSC’s job to make sure utility companies like Entergy are doing everything they can to keep bills accurate and not overcharge customers…

He says the refund on a typical Gulf States residential customer bill will be about $15.

Should marijuana laws be loosened up in Louisiana? There’s a new Public Policy Poll out saying many voters here are against extended jail time for pot possession offenders. And Louisiana ACLU Executive Director Marjorie Esman says 2/3 of those surveys even admitted they knew someone who has had marijuana…:

The survey also shows that 68% of people support letting certain seriously ill patients use medical marijuana with a doctor’s prescription — up 3% from last year.

State Police say a man from Geismar is dead after an accident on Highway 61 last night in East Feliciana Parish. They say 43-year-old James Kent Jr ran off the road for unknown reasons and crashed into a tree. He wasn’t bucked up, was ejected and suffered fatal injuries as a result.

A Metairie man who was wrongfully locked up for 17 years was told this week he’s entitled up to $330,000 in compensation. 40-year-old Nathan Brown was found guilty of an attempted rape he didn’t commit. Innocence Project New Orleans attorney Kristin Wenstrom says wrongful imprisonment money is capped at $250K but Brown can also get $80,000 for things like medical expenses and education…:
