This week lawmakers will begin public hearings on how to deal with the state’s $1.6 billion budget deficit. The House Ways and Means Committee will begin hearing tax bills tomorrow. One proposed tax to generate more revenue would raise the cigarette tax in Louisiana to the national average. Governor Bobby Jindal says he remains opposed to raising taxes, but recognizes that the state tax code is not written in stone…

Legislation that would raise more revenue will get their first hearings today in the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee.

Today marks the five year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon spill, which is considered America’s worst environment disaster ever. But LSU department of environmental sciences professor Ed Overton says it’s lucky the oil that discharged from the damaged well was highly degradable and the gulf is well acclimated to degrade oil….

Louisiana House Transportation Committee Chairwoman, Pierre Part Representative Karen St. Germain, proposes a one cent sales tax that could generate $7 billion dollars over the next decade to help fund roads and bridges. She says there is a $12 billion dollar backlog of construction and capacity projects all over the state. St. Germain says there are many important issues being discussed this session and this should be one of them…

Governor Bobby Jindal says dealing with this deficit will be complicated, but feels conversations so far have been very positive…

One proposed tax to generate more revenue that has received a lot of talk would raise the cigarette tax in Louisiana to the national average. Jindal says he remains opposed to raising taxes, but recognizes that the state tax code is not written in stone…

Jindal says he would support raising taxes in one area as long as there are tax cuts to offset the increase. He says the state could raise over half a billion dollars by taking away refunds given to businesses for 12 different taxes. Jindal says it would be wrong to protect these tax credits and then make deeper cuts to higher ed and health care…

St. Germain also has a bill that would increase the state tax on gasoline based on the price at the pump to help offset depletion of revenues that are supposed to be dedicated to improving highway capacity and infrastructure. She says the $12 billion dollar backlog of construction and capacity projects all over the state is not a DOTD problem…:

The USDA says honey production in the United States was up 19 percent from 2013 to 2014 and continues to climb. A study indicates there were 2.74 million colonies producing honey in 2014, up 4 percent from the prior year. Thomas Rinderer is the head of the USDA’s Baton Rouge Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research…:

Rinderer says this is a good sign as there was a long period of time honeybee colonies were on the decline. He says in the last 20 years the number of commercially kept colonies is down by about half but that has a lot to do with the economy of keeping bees…:

Rinderer says honeybees are essential to food production throughout the world. He says most of what we eat is dependent upon pollination by inspects, primarily bees…:

Today marks the five year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon spill, which is considered America’s worst environment disaster ever. An estimated three to four million barrels of oil spewed into the Gulf for 87 days after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. But LSU department of environmental sciences professor Ed Overton is impressed with how well the Gulf has bounced back..

Overton says we’re lucky the oil that discharged from the damaged well was highly degradable and the gulf is well acclimated to degrade oil….

Overton also says it doesn’t look there’s been a lasting impact with the shrimp and crab populations. But scientists have recorded an increase in deaths for dolphins and sea turtles, but Overton says the higher morality rate for dolphins began before the spill and he doesn’t think the spill will wipe out the sea turtle population

LSU quarterbacks Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris combined to throw for 420 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s spring game. Harris threw for 178 yards and two scores, Jennings had 242 passing and two TDs. Coach Les Miles likes how the two developed over the spring, but they still need to get more consistent…

Jeff Driskel threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns, Ryan Higgins had 214 passing yards and one TD and Price Wilson threw for 181 yards and a TD. Coach Skip Holtz says all three of them showed they are capable…

Adding to a 9 thousand person lay-off in January, oilfield services giant Schlumberger has announced plans to lay off about 11,000 additional employees because of the drop in oil prices. LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott says oil companies are dealing with crude prices roughly half of what they were a year ago and service companies are being asked for a break in price…

This latest round of rain hitting the state today and tonight has flash watches and river flood warnings in effect for many of the rain-soaked areas. The National Weather Service says the rain will be moving on tomorrow, giving us dryer weather pattern.

A conspiracy to plant drugs on a person has yielded another arrest. The former Knight Oil Tools employee was part of the plot to set up Brian Knight. Captain John Babin, with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s office, says Russell Manual is the fourth person to be arrested as part of this investigation….

A 25-year Shreveport police veteran has been fired following disciplinary hearing yesterday for an off-duty fight in 2013. Officials say Officer Tracy Fulton picked the fight that broke bones in the victim’s face and caused a concussion, following a minor traffic accident in 2013. Fulton’s attorney say they will appeal.

An oil rig that has been leaking in the Gulf for about 11 years. has a US Senator putting pressure on the feds to reveal more information. Democratic Florida Senator Bill Nelson-who’s on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation–also said “all necessary resources” should used to stop the leak of the Taylor Energy Company rig.

LOUISIANA RADIO NETWORK SPORTS: The Pelicans will play in their first postseason game since 2011 this afternoon when they take on Golden State in the Western Conference playoffs. The Warriors are the top seed after winning 67 games, while the Pelicans had to scratch and claw to get in the postseason. Golden State was 3-1 against New Orleans during the regular season, but Anthony Davis didn’t play in two of of those games. Tip-off is at 2:30.

Weather permitting, the LSU baseball team will play a doubleheader today at noon, because last night’s game was rained out. Freshman Alex Lange will start Game one and sophomore Jared Poche is expected to start game two.

UL Lafayette’s game against Texas State was also rained out last night. The two teams will play a doubleheader at noon at Bobcat Ballpark. ULM edged Arkansas State 3 to 2. Alex Hermeling pitched eight strong innings to get the win and Louisiana Tech lost 18-9 to UAB.

Southeastern Louisiana remains in first place in the Southland after beating McNeese State four to two in 10 innings last night. Julian Service blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th to win it.

Elsewhere in the Southland….Central Arkansas edged Northwestern State 2 to 1, while Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi clipped UNO 3-to-1.

The LSU gymnastics team had a disappointing finish to its season as they failed to reach the Super Six. The Tigers were shaky on beam and it cost them an opportunity to compete for a national championship.

The LSU football team will complete spring practice with the spring game at 1 PM this afternoon. The spring game will be a chance for quarterbacks Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris to gain a step on the starting job this fall. Both players will get reps with the first and second teams today.

Louisiana Tech also holds its spring game today at one P-M. It’s the first opportunity for fans to see former Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel in a Bulldog uniform.

The “Duck Commander Musical” made it’s debut Rio Hotel in Las Vegas this week to some strong reviews. Entertainer Robin Leach-writting for the Las Vegas Sun-gave the show high marks, saying “get to Broadway as fast as you can.”

LSU Freshman Alex Lange is tonight’s starting pitcher as the Fighting Tigers visit the Georgia Bulldogs to begin a three-game SEC series. Lange didn’t pitch last weekend because of elbow tightness, but he’s been LSU’s best pitcher all season, posting a 6-0 record with a 1.39 ERA.

The Pelicans will face Golden State tomorrow afternoon in game one of their best of seven series. The game will be on national television as ABC is carrying Anthony Davis’ first ever playoff game, but A-D is not getting involved in all of the hype…
