St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Burt Hazeltine has been released from the hospital and the sheriff’s office will host a benefit lunch/dinner for him today in Destrehan. Hazeltine was shot last week while directing traffic in a school zone in Paradis. Captain Pat Yoes says they’re holding this fundraiser because Hazeltine has a long road ahead toward recovery…

The fundraiser will happen at the Shriner’s Hall in Destrehan from 11AM til 8PM. Yoes says plates are just $10 and you will have three different menu options to choose from. He says all of the proceeds from the benefit will go to Hazeltine and his family to help with expenses while he is out of work…

Yoes says Hazeltine is very fortunate to have survived the shooting in what law enforcement officials have described as an ambush. He says Hazeltine is doing remarkably well as he begins the road to recovery…

The state Department of Transportation wants to hear how motorists feel the I-10 through Baton Rouge should be improved. They’ve created a survey you can take online at i10br.com as part of a study to determine the feasibility of any enhancements it could make to the congested area from West Baton Rouge to the I-10/12 split. DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallett…:

Cops says a now ex-teacher from Lake Charles Academy is under arrest amid allegations of sexual misconduct with one of her juvenile students. Lake Charles Deputy Chief Mark Kraus says they received a complaint from the mother of the victim that 35-year-old Sommer Nicole Odom of Iowa had inappropriate contact with her juvenile son on several occasions…:

Kraus says Odom is charged with 3 counts of oral sexual battery, 4 counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and 1 count of sexual battery. The suspect’s bond was set at $120,000 which was posted. Kraus says more charges could be coming but right now they have enough evidence to turn over to the DA…:

Two bills that attempt to address gender inequality when it comes to pay failed to get approval from the House Labor Committee. Natchitoches Representative Kenny Cox says Louisiana has the worst gender pay gap in the nation at 66 percent. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says employees are hard enough to find and this legislation would be a strain on business owners like himself…:

Harris feels the data is skewed when it comes to saying Louisiana is 51st in the nation for gender pay equality because we have a different workforce here. Hammond Representative Chris Broadwater says laws like this would open up floodgates of litigation…:

Despite opposition from Governor Bobby Jindal, the Senate Education committee approves legislation designed to control the cost of the TOPS scholarship program. The bill’s author, Mandeville Senator Jack Donahue, says as tuition costs rise, so does the cost for TOPS and something needs to be done to preserve the program…

TOPS is expected to cost the state over 250-million dollars this year and nearly 400-million dollars by fiscal year 2018-19. Donahue’s bill sets a baseline on how much the state will spend on TOPS and it will not automatically increase with the rise in tuition…

But Jindal’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Stafford Palmieri, says Donahue’s bill breaks a promise Louisiana made to TOPS recipients that the state would fully pay their tuition…

State Treasurer John Kennedy says Moody’s Investors Service has lowered LSU’s credit outlook from positive to stable. He says the flagship university is now one step away from a negative outlook which would be bad. Moody’s wrote the downgrade is due to limited prospects for sustained revenue growth due to potential reductions in the state budget. Kennedy says the solution would be for the legislature to stabilize funding for higher education.

The Saints will open the 2015 season against the Arizona Cardinals and then play their home opener on September 20th against the Tampa Bucs. The entire 16-game slate, with dates and times, has been released. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the final month of the season shapes up well, as the Saints have home games against the Lions and Jaguars and visit Tampa and finish the season at Atlanta. He says that should allow New Orleans to make a strong playoff push….

The Saints and Pelicans have announced plans to make renovations to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Smoothie Kinger. The estimated cost is 40-million dollars. The project will focus on improving the fan experience, including new video boards, enhanced lighting and audio systems.

The hype is building for LSU’s baseball series against Texas A-and-M, which begins tomorrow night at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers are ranked number one and the Aggies are ranked second. Jared Poche is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Tigers and each game of the series will be on television. ESPN-U on thursday, SEC Network Alternate channel on Friday and ESPN on Saturday.

In college basetball action tonight….Louisiana Tech hosts ULM. The Bulldogs beat Stephen F Austin nine to two yesterday, while the Warhawks lost to Southern Miss nine to three. And UL Lafayette, who beat Southeastern Louisiana last night, will host Southern tonight.

Tomorrow night is Game 3 of the Pelicans-Golden State Western Conference playoff series. Jrue Holiday, who missed Game two with a leg injury, is listed as day-to-day. The Warriors lead the series two games to none, but Game 3 is in New Orleans.

And Zurich Classic of New Orleans tees off tomorrow at the TPC of Louisiana in suburban New Orleans.

He said they saw Scott Tuesday.

The Youngsville Police Department says they are trying to identify a youth softball coach in Lafayette who allegedly punched another coach and broke her nose during a fight after a game. They say three players jumped on top of opposing players then a male coach punched a female coach breaking her nose in three places. Cops say the three instigating players and the coach will face changes once they are identified.

We heard sad news from the Capitol this morning. While on a trip to visit with lawmakers, Caddo District Attorney Charles Scott died at a Baton rouge hotel in his sleep last night. He was 67.

There is good news about the St. Charles Parish Deputy who was working a school crossing last week when he was gunned down by a crazed man. Corporal Burt Hazeltine was shot three times but he was released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The American Press is reporting a former teacher from Lake Charles Academy is facing charges alleging she was engaging in sexual activity with students. 35-year-old Sommer Nicole Odom of Iowa was placed under arrest Tuesday on three counts of oral sexual battery, four counts of indecent behavior with juveniles and one count of sexual battery the newspaper reports. The Lake Charles Police Department has not released information on this yet.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s office says there deputy who was ambushed with gunfire while directing school traffic last week is out of the hospital. They say Corporal Burt Hazeltine, who was hit three times, is continuing his recovery at home.

The Big Easy’s new smoke free ordinance went into effect at midnight. Founding Dean of LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health, Elizabeth Fontham, says long-term exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke could increase a women’s risk of lung cancer as much as 86-percent…:
