The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man is dead after falling off of a barge at a recycling center in Gibson. They say 44-year-old James Patrick Lafleur of Morgan City was a welder on the platform barge when he fell nearly 60 feet to the barge’s base. Lafleur was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bill continue to dump significant amounts of rain in Texas, Oklahoma, and northwest Louisiana and officials have been told that another flood event is predicted for the Red River. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says it’s expected that the Red will crest again in the next seven to ten days…:

Governor Bobby Jindal announced today that Netchex will be building a new headquarters facility in Mandeville investing $5.3 million to lease the space for 2 years followed by the completion of a new building. The expansion retains 86 jobs and creates 240 new direct jobs with an average salary of $43,800 plus benefits.

On Wednesday the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal agrees that Governor Bobby Jindal can’t do away with testing contracts tied to the controversial Common Core Education Standards. Jindal suspended the contracts last year saying they weren’t properly procured but a district judge lifted the suspension and this week the appeals court upheld that ruling.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is asking FEMA to give homeowners impacted by Red River floodwaters in northwest and central Louisiana more time to file a claim. The National Flood Insurance Program requires homeowners to file within 60 days of a flood but Donelon says many will need longer than that to collect the forms they need.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office reports a 26-year-old A.A.U. basketball coach is under arrest for allegedly sending explicit pictures and text messages to a female juvenile. The victim’s family contacted deputies and after an investigation they booked Adrian Steib Jr. on charges of computer aided solicitation of a minor and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

There’s a bill on Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk which would put into law a provision allowing cops equipment on patrol cars to scan someone’s license plate as a way to catch uninsured motorists.

Amite Police say a Roseland man is under arrest accused of killing his neighbor Wednesday. They say 39-year-old Jermaine Williams and 27-year-old Joshua Lee were having an argument when Williams pulled a gun and shot Lee five times. Williams also allegedly shot at Lee’s girlfriend. Williams is charged with second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Authorities believe an ongoing feud between the men led to the incident.

Shreveport Police say a 13-year-old boy is recovering in a local hospital after being shot in the head last night. They say the juvenile rode his bike from the scene to his mother’s house, some two miles away, before being transported to the hospital. The boy is expected to be OK.
