President Barack Obama signs a major new education bill that will give states more control over school accountability and student testing. It replaces the 2002 No Child Left Behind education law. State Superintendent of Education John White believes the new legislation is a good thing for Louisiana’s public schools.

White says this legislation will allow for the state to determine our own standards. He says that’s currently underway as a large committee made up of Louisiana education leaders is looking at proposed changes to Common Core.

White says we can expect good things around the bend for our kids. He says this legislation increases funding for low performing schools to turn themselves around and Louisiana has had success doing so in Orleans and East Baton Rouge Parishes.

Randall says children living in poverty in Louisiana has increased 73-percent in the past 5 years. She says, while it may be difficult, it’s not impossible to improve Louisiana’s ranking. Randall says it may be up to you, as an individual, to spur your family and friends to make healthy lifestyle changes…

A 14-year-old bicyclist was hit by a pickup truck and killed in Prairieville at around 6 last night. The driver was charged with negligent homicide. State Police Trooper Bryan Lee say the crash happened as the victim, Brennan Rube of Prairieville, was riding his bike on LA 73 and 26-year-old Joshua Ashford of Gonzales hit him from behind him and caused him to be thrown from the bike.

Rube, a freshman at Dutchtown High School, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lee says troopers have determined Ashford was traveling faster than the 45 mile per hour speed limit and that was a factor in the crash.

Lee says Rube was wearing dark clothing, wasn’t wearing a helmet and did not have the proper lights on his bicycle that would’ve helped Ashford see him sooner but speeding played a big factor in the accident.

The Saints will take on a team Sunday that’s still in the playoff hunt. Tampa Bay is 6-6 and Quarterback Jameis Winston is in the running for Rookie of the Year. coach Sean Payton says he’s improved since the Saints saw him in Week 2…

And Payton confirmed today that running back Mark Ingram is undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and he’s done for the year. That means CJ Spiller should have more of an opportunity to make an impact.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette is in Atlanta as he’s a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the best running back in the country. The other two finalists are Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey and Alabama’s Derrick Henry, who are also both Heisman finalists.

According to the USA Today, LSU’s coaching staff is the highest paid in the country. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron leads the way as he’s making one-point-five million dollars this year, but his future with the team is uncertain as the Tigers passing attack is ranked 111th in the country.

KNOE reports that Arkansas State offensive coordinator Walt Bell and McNeese State head coach Matt Viator are the finalists for the ULM head coaching job. ULM president Nick Bruno is expected to interview each candidate this weekend and make a decision.

UL Lafayette running back Elijah McGuire may skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. McGuire plans to get some advice from the NFL Draft Advisory Board which consults with draft eligible juniors and sophomores. McGuire has rushed for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons.

In college hoops….ULM begins a three-game road trip tonight as they visit Kent State. Also tonight…Southern is at Wyoming while Nicholls visits San Diego State.

The first published poll on next year’s US Senate race shows Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, a Democrat, and Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy leading the field in a hypothetical match up. The survey was commissioned for the super PAC supporting Kennedy. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says he can see Kennedy on top of this one:

A motorcyclist in Ascension Parish died late Wednesday after running off the side of the road according to State Police, who also believe the man was drunk. They say 43-year-old John Carrizal of Decatur Alabama was also not wearing a helmet when he slammed into a mailbox and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections announce Burl Cain will be resigning from his job as Angola Prison Warden at the end of the year. Cain has been warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary for 21 years. He’d recently been the subject of some controversy over reports of alleged side private business dealings with favored inmates and their families.

State Police say a 14-year-old Prairieville boy was killed when he was struck by a vehicle as he was riding his bicycle in Ascension Parish. They say yesterday evening, Brennan Rube was on his bike on LA 73 and a 2000 Dodge truck driven by 26-year-old Joshua Ashford hit the teen from behind causing him to be ejected from his bicycle. Rube was pronounced dead at the scene and Ashford charged with negligent homicide for suspected speeding.

St. Gabriel Police say two employees of the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center were arrested after one was caught having sex with an inmate. They say 41-year-old Preshous Hartford was caught in a compromising position with a male inmate on December 2nd while 52-year-old Monique Jackson stood lookout. Hartford is charged with malfeasance in office with sexual acts. Jackson is booked with malfeasance in office. Both women are no longer employed at the facility.

The Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment deadline to purchase insurance coverage that begins January 1st is December 15th. Kevin Counihan, CEO of Health Insurance Marketplaces, says the fee for choosing to not have health insurance, when you can afford it, will increase next year…

Bad news for the Black and Gold as running back Mark Ingram has been placed on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. That means Ingram will miss the final four games of the regular season.

Coachingsearch-dot-com reports that McNeese State head coach Matt Viator has interviewed for ULM’s head coaching vacancy. Viator just led the Cowboys to a 10-0 regular season and a Southland Conference Championship.

According to a report by USA Today, LSU has the highest paid assistant coaching staff in the country. The coaches underneath Les Miles were paid five-point-four million dollars, which is just ahead of Auburn and Alabama. LSU is the only school to pay its two coordinators at least one million dollars.

This weekend it’s the nonselect high school football championship games at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. In Class Five-A, it’s Zachary versus John Ehret. In Four-A…Karr faces defending champs Neville. The 3-A game features St. James going up against Lutcher. Kinder faces Mangham in the Class 2-A championship. In 1-A it’s Kentwood taking on Haynesville.

In college basketball action last night, Shawn Long scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as UL-Lafayette rolled over McNeese State 97-64. The Ragin Cajuns took a 21-point lead over the Cowboys into halftime and that lead grew to 40 with about 3:30 remaining in the game. UL-Lafayette evens their record to 3-3 and travels to Ruston to face Louisiana Tech Saturday. McNeese falls to 1-6 and will face Indiana Saturday in Bloomington.
