It’s that time of the year when we start to see watch lists come out for the upcoming college football season. The 2015 Paul Hornung Award watch list came out today and LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette is one of 44 players on that list. The award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. Fournette led the Southeastern Conference in all purpose yards last season. Also on the list are…ULM’s Rashon Ceasar who caught 77 passes last season and returned a dozen punts. Louisiana Tech’s Carlos Henderson, who was eighth last season in kickoff return yards as a freshman and UL Lafayette’s Elijah McGuire, who finished 19th in the country in all-purpose yards last season.

Avery Peterson, the younger brother of former LSU all-american cornerback Patrick Peterson, has announced on facebook that he is leaving the LSU football program. Avery Peterson has only appeared in one game in his two seasons in Baton Rouge.

LSU football commitment Feleipe Franks is one of 17 quarterbacks who is competing today at the Elite 11 quarterback challenge in Eugene, Oregon. Calvary Baptist QB and Ole Miss commitment Shea Patterson is also there. Six other LSU verbal pledges will be in Eugene later in the week for the seven-on-seven tournament and lineman challenge.

New Orleans Pelicans Coach Alvin Gentry is reportedly finalizing a deal to hire Phil Weber as an assistant coach. Weber was the head coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development league last season. He’s also coached with Gentry when the two were assistants in Phoenix.

Baton Rouge native and former LSU tiger Brandon Bass has reportedly agreed to contract with the LA Lakers. Bass averaged nearly 11 points and five rebounds a game for the Celtics last season.

And former New Orleans Hornet, David West, has agreed to a contract with the San Antonio Spurs. West will reportedly receive a veteran’s minimum salary, one-point-five million dollars, but he’ll have a shot at winning an NBA Championship.

If Louisiana Senator David Vitter is successful in his bid for governor, Lafayette Representative Charles Boustany says he is prepping a campaign to seek Vitter’s seat. The National Journal reports Boustany has hired an experienced Senate Campaign manager, and has told supporters quote-“you cannot wait to make your plans.”

Detective Joe Chaney says 36-year-old Joshua Tharpe of Baton Rouge was charged with vehicular homicide, and he says they are still working to determine what happened and if Tharpe was being negligent..:

It was a Fourth of July display that did a little more than light up the sky in Sabine Parish at Toledo Bend near the Texas line. Six people -who were celebrating the fourth-were sent to the hospital after lightening struck a nearby tree at an RV park. Authorities believe all six were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

He says northwest Louisiana, southwest Louisiana and the New Orleans area all fell significantly below the national estimate, and the drop in oil prices and the effects it had on the state’s energy industry could be to blame

The rising number of youth who are constantly on their cell phones and computers are putting strain on their eyes. Doctors say they’ve seen a growing amount of young patients suffering from computer vision syndrome. Dr. Monica Monica, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, says when looking at screens your blink rate decreases.

Both eye strain and headaches are associated with prolonged exposure to the screens. Monica says our eyes are suffering the consequences of smart phone, computer and tablet use. She says those in the millennial generation and younger are especially affected by the harmful effects..:

A recent study found 68 percent of millennials reporting digital eye strain. Monica says when looking at things close up, muscles in the eye actually have to contract, to change the shape of the lens, to focus. She says the best thing to do if you’re in front of a computer all day is to take periodic breaks…:

A 14-year-old was arrested in Bossier City after detectives discovered the juvenile could be responsible for the stabbing death of a 91-year-old woman he was believed to be robbing inside her home. The teen was charged with first degree murder in the death of Ludella Scott and was transferred to the Wade Juvenile Detention Center.

A 36-year-old man faces vehicular homicide charges after the utility terrain vehicle he was driving fipped over and killed a 12-year-old passenger. The incident happened in St. Helena Parish on July fourth. Detective Joe Chaney says people need to be careful on these type of vehicles…

JB Slaton says it will cost an additional four dollars for the extra two years, but hopefully it will lead to shorter lines at the DMV, with drivers having to go less often to renew their license…

LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette leads a list of players from Louisiana who are on the Paul Hornung Award watch list, which goes to the nation’s most versatile major college football player. Fournette led the SEC in all purpose yards last season.

Also on the list are ULM’s Rashon Ceaser who had 77 receptions last season, Louisiana Tech’s Carlos Henderon, who was eighth in the nation in kickoff return yards and the Ragin Cajuns Elijah McGuire, who finished 19th in the country in all-purpose yards last season.

Also on the list is Texas A-and-M’s Speedy Noil, who had a standout prep career at Edna Karr.

The US Women’s soccer team gave Louisiana sports fans something to cheer for last night as they defeated Japan five to two for their record third World Cup championship and first since 1999.

Today in London, Serena Williams defeated her older sister Venus Williams in two sets in their seventh meeting at Wimbledon. Serena has now won 25 straight Grand Slam matches, as she advances to the quarterfinals at the grass-court event.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is invesitgation an apparent accidental shooting which claimed the life of an unidentified woman. Cops say they were told by the victim’s estranged husband that the two were handling a firearm when it discharged by mistake and struck the woman. She was dead when deputies arrived. The investigation is ongoing.

State Police say that same-sex couples in Louisiana will be able to change their name on their driver’s license starting today. The Office of Motor Vehicles is letting folks alter their license and vehicle registration. The move shows Louisiana continues to get in line with the US Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage.

The family of the 12 year old boy from Watson who died after a utility terrain vehicle accident on July 4th has set up a GoFundMe Account online to help with hospital and funeral expenses. The St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s office has arrested the driver of the UTV, 36-year-old Joshua Tharpe, and charged him with vehicular homicide. Investigators believe Tharpe made a sharp turn and flipped the vehicle, killing the boy.
