The Louisiana High School Officials Association and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association have reached an agreement over refs pay which keeps high school sports safe for the fall. The two sides held a meeting yesterday. It is not known if there was a pay raise given to referees as details of the compromise have not been released at this time. LHSOA meets again Wednesday to discuss the outcome.

The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating an apparent murder/suicide which left three dead and one injured in an incident which took place in front of a 1-year-old child. Spokesman Corporal L’Jean McKneely says they believe 20-year-old Marquiles Whaley is the shooter and he’d been involved in some sort of argument at the home..:

He says this is a tragic story and the investigation is ongoing.

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s office is also investigation a possible murder/suicide which took place over the weekend. Officers found Scott and Rhonda White deceased in a home in Ruston. Few details are being released.

The LHSAA and its officials have reached a tentative agreement that will prevent a work stoppage by referees this fall. Louisiana High School Officials Association President Paul LaRosa says they were able to come to terms after a four hour plus meeting in Baton Rouge on Sunday. He says says they are holding off on releasing any details of the agreement to the public, until they can speak with their officials…

Officials threatened to strike and not show up when volleyball and football games started in August, unless they received a pay raise and other stipulations, like improved security at games.

The Walton County Sheriff’s office has released the arrest report of former Saints assistant coach Aaron Kromer, who was arrested on Sunday on a misdemeanor battery charge. The report alledges Kromer threw a boy to the ground and punched him in the face over an argument involving beach chairs near his home in Florida.

Louisiana Tech defensive backs Adairius Barnes and Xavier Woods are on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, which is given to the nation’s best defensive back. ULM’s Mitch Lane is also on the list. No one from LSU made the list.

UL Lafayette’s Shawn Long has been named to the 2015 US Pan American Men’s basketball team, which will compete in Toronto later this month. Former LSU Tiger Anthony Randolph is also on that squad.

CEO Mike Rogers attributes the jump in soon-to-be ex-smokers, in part, to the state’s 50-cent tax increase for a pack of cigarettes. He says CDC statistics back up this theory…:

Two officers with Lake Charles PD are on administrative leave after a burglary suspect shot himself in a squad car with a gun that had been left in an equipment bag in the back seat. Authorities say 18-year-old Stacy Lamb of Lake Charles was able to gain access to the department issued weapon somehow and shoot himself in the foot two times. They say leaving the bad in the back seat of the unit is a violation of department policy. Lamb faces many charges.

It appears the Louisiana High School Athletics Association has avoided a work stoppage involving its game officials. Jeff Palermo has the story…:

The NBC reality show, Running Wild, which returns tonight will feature an episode later in the season in which Saints Quarterback Drew Brees apparently jumps on the back of a crocodile. They say 20-year-old Marquiles Whaley shot three women: his 18-year-old girlfriend, her 36-year-old mother and another 38-year-old man before turning the gun on himself. The mother survived but is in the hospital. A 1-year-old was present during the shootings but was not harmed.

State Police say a single vehicle crash in Washington Parish has left one man dead. They say 26-year-old Benicio Perez’s pickup truck ran off the road while he was attempting to drive around a curve in Franklinton and then struck a tree. Perez, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The Lake Charles Police Department says two officers are on administrative leave after a burglary suspect shot himself in a squad car. 18-year-old Stacy Lamb of Lake Charles shot himself twice in the foot with a department issued weapon that had been left in an equipment bag in the back seat of the police car. Miss Oklahoma Olivia Jordan was crowned Miss USA last night in Baton Rouge. Ylianna Guerra of Texas was named first runner-up. The pageant, which aired on the REELZ cable network, was pulled from NBC’s programming schedule after pageant co-owner Donald Trump’s controversial comments regarding Mexican immigrants. Jordan will represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.

Hundreds of reporters attend this event to hear from SEC coaches and players. LSU running back Leonard Fournette will be there and Braden Gall, with Athlon Sports, says the running back will find out what its like to be a star football player in the SEC…

Former Ruston High School football coach, Jimmy “Chick” Childress has died. Childress coached the Bearcats for 12 seasons and brought home four Class 4-A state championships in 1982, 1986, 1988, and 1990. Childress was inducted into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Childress was 83 years-old.

After a four hour meeting in Baton Rouge Sunday, it appears the high school football season will kick off without delay. The Louisiana High School Officials Association and the LHSAA have reportedly reached a tentative agreement that will put officials on the field in time for fall sports. Specific details of the agreement have not been released and it is unknown if official received any pay increase.

The Pelicans continue to roll in NBA summer league play after defeating Dallas 90-86 in Las Vegas. Seth Curry scored 25 points for New Orleans. Larry Drew II added nine points, five assists, and two steals as the Pels improve to 2-0. NBA Summer League play continues through July 20th.

The Pels have signed their first free agent of the offseason that wasn’t one of their own. Small forward Alonzo Gee has agreed to a two-year deal with New Orleans. The 28-year-old split time with Denver and Portland last season.
