In a recent survey by pollster Verne Kennedy, Republican Scott Angelle has moved ahead of fellow GOP candidate David Vitter in the race for governor. The poll of 600 residents, conducted between July 27th and the 31st, shows Angelle with 25-percent of the vote and Vitter with 22-percent. The Monroe Police Department continues the investigation today into the death of a ULM student whose body was discovered inside her apartment over the weekend. Cops are not identifying the woman at this time except to say she is an Asian ULM international student. Investigators say there was no sign of forcecd entry into the apartment, but the death is being treating as a homicide until it has been determined otherwise.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say this brutally hot weather could reach its highest point today then mild relief will settle in by Tuesday. Excessive heat warnings are posted throughout the state until this at least this evening according to NWS forecaster Andrew Ansorge…:

Baton Rouge Police say the father of a 3 month old infant, who died over the weekend from injuries related to blunt force trauma, could face charges in her death. They say 28-year-old John Hope brought the baby to the hospital last week with life threatening injuries and told a story doctors didn’t feel added up. Hope was charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile at the time and additional charges are expected.

Baton Rouge food blogger and radio host Jay Ducote will be competing for the title of Food Network Star in the show’s finale on August 16th. Three finalists made their own cooking show pilot in last night’s episode and Ducote made crawfish etoufee over fried catfish in his showcase dish. The pilots will be judged and the big winner, who will get their own show on the network, will be announced at the end of this Sunday’s finale.

Funeral services for the Shreveport Police officer killed in the line of duty last week will be held today in Ascension Parish. Officer Thomas Lavalley, a native of St. Amant, was gunned down while responding to a disturbance call. 27-year-old Grover Cannon is charged with first degree murder in Lavalley’s death. Services are scheduled for 11AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant.

School’s back in session and authorities are urging drivers to be more cautious on the roads. American Automobile Association spokesperson Don Redman suggests that parents talk to their teen drivers about being vigilant and watch out for children walking and riding bicycles…

Jennings Police say a teenager is dead and two others are in custody after a weekend shooting at a party. Authorities say, when they arrived at the scene, they found 17-year-old Jawon Lennett suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Lennett was transported to a local hospital where he later died. 17-year-old Kyvonte Eaglin of Welsh was arrested and booked with second degree murder, while 19-year-old Jermaine Washington, Jr., also of Welsh, is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

A New Orleans man has been arrested in connection to a double-homicide in Donaldsonville on January 26th. Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 26 year-old Quinton Jackson in the Crescent City, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 37 year-old Chad Nichols and 29 year-old Benny Booker. Authorites believe the shooting was a drug-related crime.

A Baton Rouge man faces a cruelty charge following alleged incident that sent his 3 month old daughter to the hospital with skull and rib fractures, bruising and a bloody mouth. Twenty-eight year-old John William Hope is charged with 2nd degree cruelty to a juvenile. According to an affidavit, the baby is in critical, but stable condition; with no brain activity reported. The report says Hope told his wife that the baby had fallen off a changing table.

The National Weather Service says record high temperatures are possible in many areas of the state this weekend. State Climatologist Barry Keim says an area of high pressure in the central Gulf is limiting cloud cover and thunderstorms. He says humidity levels will remain high, driving the heat indexes way up…

Visitation for 29 year-old Thomas LaValley will be Sunday at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales starting at 5pm , with the funeral on Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 11am. Baton Rouge Police announce they will be lining I-10 to pay their respects when LaValley’s honorary procession passes through around 2pm today.

First, it was some criticism for starting the school year too early in August for some Louisiana school districts. Now the Centers For Disease Control is pointing to the early start time in the morning for many students. According to a report, about 40 thousand students in middle and high school start their day at an average time of 8:03 am, instead of the CDC’s recommended time of 8:30, to allow kids to get enough sleep. In this report, Louisiana had the earliest average start time at 7:40 in the morning.
