The LSU Tigers have three players that have been named to the first team preseason All-SEC coaches team….running back Leonard Fournette, offensive lineman Vadal Alexander and defensive back Jalen Mills, who will likely miss the first couple of games because of a lower leg injury. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White are second-team selections, along with punter Jamie Keehn. Wide receiver Travin Dural is a third team selection and so is defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.

Louisiana Tech defensive end Vontarrius Dora has been added to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. Dora has 99 total career tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and seven and half sacks. Defensive tackle Vernon Butler is another Bulldog on the Lombardi Award watch list.

LSU tight end DeSean Smith says his father knew state trooper Steven Vincent, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this week. Smith says his dad, Gary Smith, were in the Police Academy together in 2003.

At Saints training camp today, cornerback Brandon Browner was spotted on the field for the first time since sustaining an injury in the preseason opener against Baltimtore. Browner was wearing a brace on his right knee and did some light work with the trainers. Running back Khiry Robinson did not practice for a second straight day.

The black college football preseason poll is out. Grambling is ranked third, Southern is ranked sixth and Alcorn State is the preseason number one team.

The LSU baseball team has released its 2016 schedule. The Fighting Tigers will open the year on February 19th against Cincinnati. A couple of other highlights, they’ll travel to Nicholls State on March 2nd, host Louisiana Tech March 8th, battle UL Lafayette in the Wally Pontiff Junior Classic at Zephyr Field on March 22nd, host Vanderbilt April 8th to the 10th and play two games at Notre Dame on May 10th and 11th.

L. Jean McKneely says officers ended up having to shoot 30 year-old St. Julian Baranco, sending him to the hospital. His passenger got away on foot…

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is accepting applications for the “Wildlife Enforcement Cadet” position until September 9th. L-D-W-F Spokesperson Adam Einck says they want to bring in new recruits to bolster the ranks they have in the field and the plan to enroll around 24 cadets for training which will begin in December.

Einck says the cadets will train at the L-D-W-F’s training facility at the Waddill Outdoor Education Center in Baton Rouge. He says they’ll be taught boating laws, state and federal wildlife and fisheries laws and other law enforcement training.

Army officials announce about 1,000 infantrymen from Fort Polk’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team will deploy to Afghanistan next month. Base spokesperson Kimberly Reischling (rye-shling) says the unit will be serving as advisors to the Afghan National Defense Security forces which includes their army and police…:

There were no on-duty officers fatally shot last year, only one in 2013 and two in 2012. So why the high number this year? Professor at the LSU School of Public Health Peter Scharf says there’s a variety of factors.

Planned Parenthood has filed a lawsuit against Louisiana over Governor Bobby Jindal’s plans to cut Medicaid funding to the organization. Its leaders assert that the loss of those dollars would limit health services for the poor. Jindal announced these plans after hidden camera videos surfaced apparently showing Planned Parenthood workers discussing the sale of fetuses.

A vigil for State Trooper Steven Vincent is being held thi evning at the Iowa High School football stadium at 7pm. Members of law enforcement agencies and other first responders are asked to wear their uniforms. All will be asked to sit in a place of honor on the football field. A number of speakers are scheduled, including Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso and several clergy members.

Louisiana Tech’s Vantarrius Dora has been added to the Lombardi Watch list. Dora enters his final season of eligibility with 99 tackles and 7.5 sacks during his career. While Coach Skip Holtz likes his starters on defense, he’s concerned about not having enough quality back-ups. He spoke following the team’s latest scrimmage….

Funeral arrangements for State Police Trooper Steven Vincent — who was killed in the line of duty Sunday, are set. Visitation will be begin 3pm Friday at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Lake Charles, and the funeral will take place at noon Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Vincent’s accused shooter, 54-year-old Kevin Daigle, is also facing homicide charges in the murder of his roommate, 54 year old Blake Brewer of Moss Bluff.

Officers fired shots which hit Baranco. The man was released from a hospital and charged with 2 counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer. A passenger in the vehicle remains at large.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who alleged cop murderer Kevin Daigle could have also killed as 54-year-old Blake Brewer of Moss Bluff. They say Daigle, who is charged in the shooting death of Trooper Steven Vincent, is reported to have lived with Brewer and was driving Brewer’s truck at the time of the shooting. Sheriff Tony Mancuso says Brewer’s death is being investigated as a homicide…:

The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Erika is moving through the Atlantic Ocean toward the Caribbean. They say some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days and on the track the center of Erika will approach the Leeward Islands Wednesday night and early Thursday. After that, the hurricane center expects Erika to move close to Puerto Rico and Hispaniola before becoming a category one hurricane early on Saturday near the Bahamas.

But Houma Representative Joe Harrison says the law is clear…

Most of the Bayou State will get a bit of relief from the sweltering heat this week in the form of a cold front moving through Louisiana. State Climatologist Barry Keim says afternoon highs will hover around 90 degrees with morning lows dipping down as low as the mid 60s. He suggests residents make some outdoor plans this week to soak in this great weather…
