President Barack Obama is currently walking through communities in New Orleans to see, hear about and recognize areas which suffered substantial damage following Hurricane Katrina, but 10 years later are thriving developments or where construction is well underway. Mr. Obama said today that New Orleans is a great example of innovation in restoring urban communities.

10 years ago thousands of people were evacuating out of the New Orleans area as Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on Louisiana; and it was chaos. So in that time how has the state improved efforts to make such a large scale evacuation more smooth? Department of Transportation spokesman Rodney Mallett says they now contract with bus services…:

He says they’ve also improved protocols with neighboring states to help out in contraflow situations.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture says an all new mobile pet shelter is in place and ready for use in case someone is forced to leave their animals behind in natural disasters. Commissioner Mike Strain says anyone can go to an evacuation point and they will provide safe transportation to a mega pet shelter…:

The town of Sunset is in mourning today after one of their officers was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance allegedly by a man who also is accused of stabbing two sisters; one who died. Investigators believe the suspect, Harrison Lee Riley Jr., was assaulting his wife and the two women he stabbed were trying to protect her. Officer Henry Nelson responded to the scene and was gunned down. Sunset Mayor Charles James says the incident has rocked the small St. Landry Parish:

Riley faces charges of first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Meanwhile visitation for the State Trooper who was also killed this week, Steven Vincent, will take place tomorrow from 3pm-9pm at the Lake Charles Civic Center Rosa Heart Theater in Lake Charles. The location was updated to accommodate the large number of people who plan to attend.

State officials continue to bring awareness to the growing heroin and synthetic problem in and around the Baton Rouge community. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark says his office has already seen 24 heroin overdose deaths so far this year. He says they are teaming up with Capital Area Human Services in the effort because this is the time of year they tend to see a spike in the problem…:

He says there have been three confirmed deaths this year linked to synthetic drug use.

Gas prices dropped two pennies from the day before. The current statewide average for a gallon of regular is $2.22. That’s almost a dime less from the same time last week.

The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office and Capital Area Human Services are teaming up to raise awareness about the growing heroin and synthetic marijuana problem in the area. Coroner Dr. Beau Clark says his office has already seen 24 heroin overdose deaths so far this year. He says the message of this campaign is clear…

It’s being reported that the man accused of killing Sunset Police Officer Henry Nelson was his cousin. Authorities say 35-year-old Harrison Lee Riley, Jr. and Nelson were related, but it is unclear how close. Riley also allegedly stabbed three women in the incident, killing 40-year-old Shameka Johnson. The two other victims, including the suspect’s wife, are hospitalized with stab wounds. Nelson is expected to be charged with two counts of first degree murder among other charges.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture unveils the new mobile pet shelter which will be used to evacuate domesticated animals in the event of an emergency. Commissioner Mike Strain says up until now, they were loading pets into 18-wheelers to transport them to safety which was very difficult and not safe. This new pet plan includes 48 to 53 foot transport trucks for pets…

The Coast Guard reports that two crew members were injured after a natural gas pipeline ruptured and caught fire off the Louisiana coast. They say the incident happened about 25 miles south of Marsh Island. The injured crewmen were transported to Houma. Their condition is unknown. Authorities say the fire is extinguished and the pipeline’s owner is sending a vessel to repair the ruptured pipeline. The incident is under investigation.

For the second time within a week, a Louisiana policeman has been shot dead in the line of duty. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says Harrison Lee Wiley Junior of Arnaudville is accused of killing Sunset Police officer Henry Nelson during a domestic disturbance. Guirdoz says they believe Wiley was on some sort of illegal narcotic, but they are not sure what….

The University of Louisiana Lafayette New Iberia Research Center is part of a global effort testing an Ebola vaccine for wild apes. Apes Inc. President Dr. Peter Walsh says this testing could help pave the way for an oral vaccination for humans….

Governor Bobby Jindal is urging President Barack Obama not to politicize his visit to New Orleans today by discussing climate change. In a letter to the President, Jindal asks Obama to “respect this important time of remembrance by not inserting the divisive political agenda of liberal environmental activism.” The President’s visit is part of commemorations of the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
