The first meeting of the task force to study the impact of illegal immigration on Louisiana taxpayers is underway. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges says the purpose of the taskforce is to minimize the cost to Louisiana taxpayers for having illegal immigrates in our state. She says Louisiana receives more unaccompanied minors than Arizona and New Mexico combined.

Beginning tomorrow, sportsmen across the state will be looking to take advantage of Louisiana’s Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. The tax holiday, which runs through Monday, waives the state and local sales tax on firearms, ammunition, and hunting supplies. Some exemptions do apply. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office says two men were arrested following a drug bust in New Iberia. Authorities say over $3,500 in cash, 5 firearms, and illegal drugs were seized in the operation. Dequincy Lewis and Patrick Sam were arrested and face numerous charges including possession with the intent to distribute schedule II narcotics and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The police investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.

The injury to Lewis means Delvin Breaux and Brandon Browner could be your starting cornerbacks week one. But Browner is also dealing with an injury.

The Memphis Grizzlies announce that rookie forward Jarell Martin will undergo surgery today for a fractured left foot. They say the former LSU standout suffered the injury after colliding with another player during a workout.

And former Tiger and current Los Angeles Clippers free agent forward Glen Davis is expected to miss eight to twelve weeks of basketball related activities after he reportedly had surgery on his left ankle. It is reported the surgery repaired torn ligaments and removed a cyst and a bone spur in his left ankle.

Authorities have arrested a gunman involved in a shooting near Grambling State yesterday. Grambling police say 23-year-old Tre’Stevenson Jones has been charged with attempted second degree murder. The search for Jones caused Ruston High School to be on lockdown yesterday. No one was injured and authorities say a drug deal gone bad led to the shooting.

Minden Congressman John Fleming is asking President Obama to hold a National Day of Prayer to stop the violence against police officers. Louisiana has lost 6 cops from fatal gunfire this year. Fleming says we can’t allow this pattern of targeting law enforcement to continue…:

The FDA has sent warning letters to 5 distributors of pure powdered caffeine and Louisiana Poison Control Center Director Mark Ryan agrees the product puts consumers at risk.
