After a wet muggy close to the week, Louisiana is in for a beautiful weekend. Jonathan Brazzell with the National Weather Service says lows this weekend are expected to be in the mid-50s, and highs in the low 80s. He says it’ll be a great time to spend some time outdoors because it’s going to feel refreshing compared to what we’ve been seeing the past few months:

In somewhat of a surprise move, former Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has qualified to run for his old District 4 seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He’s going up against educator Fred Moss IV and accountant Reginald Johnson. Political analyst Elliott Stonecipher says Glover has the highest name recognition by far…:

Glover, a Democrat, held the same spot in the House from 1996 to 2006 before he was elected Mayor of Shreveport.

An 80-year-old man tragically lost his life after he was run over by another vehicle while he was changing a tire on the side of the road in East Baton Rouge Parish. State Police spokesperson Bryan Lee says 47-year-old Haosheng Huang of Baton Rouge lost control of his vehicle in a curve and hit 80-year-old Lawrence Shepherd. Huang is not suspected of being impaired…:

Lee says police will be investigating why Huang lost control of his vehicle and they do anticipate charges will be filed.

Qualifying for the fall elections came to a close yesterday and nearly half of Louisiana’s state lawmakers are going back to the Capitol unopposed. 20 out of 39 senators and 49 out of 105 House members will not have anyone challenging them in the October primary.

With LSU and the Saints both kicking off their season openers this weekend on the road, Louisiana restaurants are expecting fans to pour in. Eric Gill has the story..:

And it might not seem like it right now with all the rain, but this weekend will be a perfect one for sitting outside on a patio whether out or at home. Jonathan Brazzell with the National Weather Service says Saturday’s afternoon highs will be in the mid-80s and we’ll get into the low 80s come Sunday.

State police say an 80-year-old man died after he was run over while changing his tire on the side of the road in East Baton Rouge Parish. State Police spokesperson Bryan Lee says Lawrence Shepherd was changing the tire on his vehicle on the shoulder of LA42, known as Burbank in Baton Rouge, around 6:30 Thursday…:

Lee says 47-year-old Haosheng Huang of Baton Rouge missed a curve when he lost control. Charges are pending.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a Houma man this morning in connection to the stabbing of his girlfriend. Spokesperson Dawn Foret says 35-year-old Ashraf Khalil is charged with attempted second degree murder after a woman ran into a convenience store begging for help after claiming she was stabbed by him in a vehicle:

She says the 23-year-old victim is in serious condition but is expected to recover.

Erica Burns with the Louisiana Restaurant Association says after the summer lull, the packed houses will be a nice boost for establishments. She says bars and restaurants often see increased business during home and away game days…

Summer is typically a slow period for restaurants in the state because it’s hot and a lot of people go on vacation. Now that the weather is beginning to cool down and football season is in full swing, Burns says this will have a positive impact on business…

Fall is a time that many restaurant owners look forward to. Burns says, on game days, patrons will often spend extensive amounts of time eating and drinking at restaurants while watching their team play on television.

A former state legislator, who served two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to money laundering charges in 2008, announces that he is once again seeking office. Derrick Shepherd, a Democrat from Marrero, qualified to run for the 87th District House seat Thursday. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says whether Shepherd, a convicted felon, will remain on the ballot remains to be seen…

Dubos says the Louisiana Constitution prohibits convicted felons from seeking public office at the state level. Shepherd says he plans to challenge that restriction as unconstitutional. Dubos says with just four weeks until early voting begins, Shepherd doesn’t have much time to resolve the issue. Dubos doesn’t think the outcome will go in Shepherd’s favor…

Today in Baton Rouge a jury convicted a Bossier City drifter of second degree murder in the 1984 killing of Crowley businessman Gary Kergan. 66-year-old Ronald Dunnagan, who was also a former French Quarter clown, now faces an automatic sentence of life in prison. Kergan, along with his brother, owned several Sonic restaurants in south Louisiana. His body was never found and he was declared legally dead in 1986. The jury deliberated today for less than a hour before returning with the guilty verdict.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a Houma man is under arrest for attempted second degree murder after his girlfriend showed up at a gas station with multiple stab wounds. They say the suspect, 35-year-old Ashraf Khalil, was on scene when deputies arrived and taken into custody. They believe the incident happened inside a vehicle and the 23-year-old victim suffered wounds to her arm, back, chest, hand and her throat was cut. She is in critical condition.

In a wild game last night, Western Kentucky outlasted Louisiana Tech 41-38. The Bulldogs kicked a field goal with less than a minute to go to cut the lead to three, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds. Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel was impressive throwing for 357 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

A lot of state colleges will hit the gridiron Saturday: Tulane faces number 15 Georgia Tech, UL-Lafayette hosts Northwestern State, Nicholls State travels to ULM, McNeese State hosts Incarnate Word, and Southeastern Louisiana takes on Florida Tech.

The Saints kick off the 2015 regular season Sunday at Arizona. Saints radio color analyst Hokie Gajan says there is concern about the defense, who gave up some big plays and only tallied two sacks in four preseason games. Gajan says this is about as uncomfortable he’s been about the Saints heading into a season opener…

The Franklin Parish High School football team returned to the field last night for the first time since the death of Tyrell Cameron. Cameron died after colliding with another player during a punt return last Friday night. The Patriots were defeated by Wossman 43-18.

The Secretary of State’s Office says almost 2,100 candidates statewide qualified for the 1,150 state and local offices up for grabs in the election. A total of 494 candidates across the state were elected automatically when no one signed up to run against them.

A television commercial has been released by the Louisiana Water Coalition, a political action committee, reminding voters of David Vitter’s 2007 prostitution scandal. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Vitter supporters already know this information and have stuck with him since day one…

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles will not change their policies regarding photo IDs following an incident where a transgender woman was denied a new ID. State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson says the policy allowing clerks to question individuals about how they represent themselves in order to prevent fraud will remain in place. However, Edmonson says transgender people will be allowed to take their photo as they appear every day.
