Saints running back CJ Spiller returned to practice yesterday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. Spiller did not participate fully, but it’s still a sign he maybe able to play this Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Reserve guard Norris Cole is reportedly staying with the Pelicans. The 26-year-old has accepted the Pels qualifying offer of three-million dollars. Cole was traded to New Orleans from Miami during the middle of the season and the Birds went 18-and-11 after Cole arrived in the Crescent City.

In high school football tonight….the third ranked team in Class Two-A, Calvary Baptist visits the ninth ranked team in Five-A, the Byrd Yellow Jackets. That game can be seen on Fox Sports New Orleans as its the LHSAA Game of the Week.

LSU leads the NFL with 40 active players on opening day rosters. That’s three better than Miami of Florida. Ten of LSU’s 40 players are defensive backs.

And Louisiana Tech leads Conference USA in players in the NFL on opening week rosters. There are eleven former Bulldogs in the league.

And Grambling State is mourning the death of Doris Robinson. The widow of legendary Grambling football coach Eddie Robinson Senior. Mrs. Robinson passed away yesterday. She was 96.

The new president of the Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association is eager to work with the new governor and legislature on removing or altering the current 180-million dollar cap that was put on the state’s film tax credit program this year. Robert Vosbein, CEO of the Silver Screen Group, took over for Will French and says his message to policy makers will be that thousands of jobs are at stake.

Vosbein says he’s very concerned, because the state of Georgia has a similar film tax credit program and is getting a lot of Louisiana’s business because our state has a cap on the number of credits redeemed.

After years of talk about a passenger train between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, seven parish leaders in southeast Louisiana say it’s time for the talk to end and call on the next governor to make it happen. Kristen Palmer, chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, says passenger rail service in this region can give residents better access to jobs…

Palmer says there will be huge demands on the transportation system, as over 20-billion dollars in economic development projects are planned for the region. She says the rail service would operate on existing freight lines and the average trip between B-R and New Orleans would be about 90 minutes.

The Southern Rail Commission plans to present funding options to the gubernatorial candidates later this fall. Palmer says they estimate the rail line would have an annual ridership of over 210-thousand people. She says over 30-thousand people commute between Baton Rouge and New Orleans every day.

Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced this week that they are working on a tool that will allow people to show empathy for posts, but it’s not clear if it would actually be called a “dislike” button. Moore says if someone posts that they lost their dog, a friend might hit the “like” button to show their support — but it doesn’t really mean that they liked that your dog died. She says a tool like a dislike button lets a friend show condolences in this case…:

Governor Bobby Jindal continued to go after Donald Trump, the republican presidential front-runner, in Wednesday night’s CNN republican presidential debate. Jindal was not invited to the debate that featured Trump and 10 other main candidates, but he participated in a debate featuring  lower-tier candidates and didn’t hold back on his criticism of the Trump campaign

A federal judge in Baton Rouge denied Governor Bobby Jindal’s request to block federal officials from penalizing the state if Louisiana decides to stop using the Common Core education standards. Judge Shelly Dick rejected the governor’s motion for a preliminary injunction, because Jindal’s lawyers didn’t show any evidence that such a threat will occur.

Parish leaders along I-10 between New Orleans and Baton Rouge gathered today to urge the next Louisiana governor to support a proposed railway commuter line that would connect the state’s two largest cities. Kristen Palmer, chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, says the commuter railway would give residents better access to jobs and help traffic on I-10…

According to a new study, about 12% of kids’ daily calories comes from fast food. The National Center for Health Statistics says that youngsters between the ages of 12 to 19 ate twice as many calories from fast food as children ages two to 11. Dr. Melinda Sothern, with the LSU Health Sciences Center, says researchers did not find any differences in caloric consumption by gender, weight or poverty status, but…:

She says she hopes this study will help parents keep a better eye on what their kids are eating.

Leaders are once again opening the discussion about creating a railway commuter line that would connect Baton Rouge and New Orleans. During a gathering in Gonzales today, parish presidents and representatives from the seven parishes along the would-be route got together to urge the next Louisiana governor to back the project. The Southern Rail Commission plans to present funding options to the gubernatorial candidates later this fall.

Two more lawmakers have been added to the list of those who will be running without opposition in the October 24th primary. The state House says Hammond Representative Chris Broadwater and Covington Representative Paul Hollis both had challengers who have decided not to run for the office. The number of legislators in the lower chamber who do not have opponents is 51 out of 105.

Master Trooper Brooks David says 35-year-old Angela Brown of Pollock hit a car on LA 86 then, and as she tried to flee, ran off the road and struck a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene. David says authorities have linked Brown to a second hit and run that occurred just before the fatal crash…:

The Baton Rouge Police Department says a 19-year-old college bound student was killed in a head on crash last night on Scenic Highway. They say 19-year-old Tashadow Gray was hit head on when a vehicle driven by 30-yaer-old Tnaia Burnette swerved into her lane. Gray was pronounced dead on the scene. Cops believe Burnette was drinking and charges could be coming.

State Police say a woman from Grant Parish died when she crashed into a tree after investigators believe she’d already been involved in two hit and run crashes. Master Trooper Brooks David says 35-year-old Angela Brown of Pollock side swiped a vehicle in Iberia Parish, then when she tried to flee that’s when she crashed. He says she died at the scene and the investigation is ongoing…:

A Marine from Denham Springs who was killed in a rollover crash during a training exercise in California will be received in New Orleans on Friday. Cpl Bryan Lauw’s body will be escorted to Denham Springs and is expected to arrive at 7pm. Friends and family would like the communities along the route to give Lauw a hero’s welcome.
