During a Lt. Governor’s candidate debate, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden said he was appalled that state Senator Elbert Guillory used the “n-word” in a campaign commercial. Holden, who is an African-American, let his frustrations known when asked about the commercial that Guillory aired which has former President Lyndon Johnson using the racial slur…:

Guillory, who is a black lawmaker from Opelousas, said he included the phrase in the ad for “educational purposes” and that only an idiot that hadn’t seen the commercial would make the type of comments Holden made.

The New Orleans City Council today received reports from several entities that disagree with Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s inclination to remove 4 prominently displayed Confederate sautes. Several speakers complained to the council that the hearings to remove the statues are show trials to carry out the mayor’s request. The council hasn’t set a date yet for a vote on the issue.

The Many Police Department says a Texas man arrested on drug charges tried to tell police that the pants containing the alleged illegal narcotics were not his pants. Spokesperson Dean Lambert says 41-year-old Demontra Nelson was apprehended after trying to cash a false check at a grocery store. Lambert says K-9 dogs found the cocaine and marijuana on Nelson’s possession…:

It’s almost flu season again so that means it’s time to get your flu shot. The Center for Disease Control’s Flu Expert Michael Jhung says last year’s flu season was a rough one so if the vaccination is available, you should get one as soon as possible. He says this year’s flu shot will provide better protection from the virus than last year’s

Jhung says everyone needs to be vaccinated but those over 65 and children under five are at a high risk for catching the virus. He says the flu shot is safe and it can only cause local side effects, like redness at the injection site.

Today during a Lt. Governor candidate forum in Baton Rouge, Democrat Mayor Kip Holden and Republican Senator Elbert Guillory duked it out over Guillory’s use of the N-Word in his campaign commercials. Holden said he doesn’t feel that it does anyone any good to throw the word around like that. Guillory responded calling Holden an idiot who obviously didn’t watch the commercial.

The Shreveport Police Department announces a $5,000 reward is now being offered for murdered officer Thomas LaValley’s department issued weapon which is still missing. Officer LaValley was shot and killed in the line of duty early August allegedly by 27-year-old Grover Cannon. Authorities say the reward will be given to anyone who has information as to where the missing Glock 22, .40 caliber handgun can be found.

There’s some more rough news for the Louisiana oil and gas industry. Moody’s Investors says the low oil prices will likely force another round of cuts from the drilling budgets of the largest companies next year. Oil prices are currently around the $47 per barrel mark. Moody’s included a US benchmark oil price of $52 per barrel in 2016.

The discussion about whether or not to build a passenger train line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans has been going on for years, but leaders in southeast Louisiana want to make it happen with the next governor. Kristen Palmer, chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, says passenger rail service in this region can give residents better access to jobs…:

The Southern Rail Commission plans to present funding options to the gubernatorial candidates later this fall.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer involved shooting which sent the suspect to the hospital. They say a 911 call came in about a woman who was possibly being held against her will in Baker, and when deputies responded they encountered an armed man. That’s when law enforcement fired upon the suspect and he was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to authorities. The names of those involved have not been released.

The Saints offense could get a lift this weekend if running back CJ Spiller returns. Spiller has been sidelined by a knee injury, but practiced yesterday for the first time since undergoing surgery. Spiller hasn’t had much time to work with Drew Brees. But the veteran Q-B is optimistic the two can click right away….

Authorities say an officer involved shooting in Alexandria has left one man dead. They say 27-year-old Bobby Anderson of Alexandria was shot and killed by a US Marshals Violent Offender Task Force member while they were attempting to serve arrest warrants. It’s reported that Anderson was armed and threatening officers which resulted in a Task Force member firing his weapon. Anderson was wanted for two counts of attempted second degree murder and several other felony charges.

Seven parish leaders in southeast Louisiana call on the next governor to make passenger train service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans a reality. Chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, Kristen Palmer, says the rail service would operate on existing freight lines and the average trip between the Capital City and the Big Easy would be about 90 minutes…
