The four major candidates for governor will appear in a statewide televised debate at six o’ clock on Louisiana Tech’s campus. Political Analyst Clancy Dubos says he expects to see the two frontrunners, Republican David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards, maintain their position and the other two candidates, Republicans Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne, attempt to break out and distinguish themselves.

 In a Raycom Media poll of 600 registered voters, Edwards and Vitters are polling above 21-percent, while Dardenne and Angelle are in the single digits. Dubos says Vitter will likely be a target tonight….

The LSU Mammal Curator has discovered a new species while surveying in Indonesia. Jake Esselstyn found a new rodent never seen before. He says he and his team trapped a type of screw rat, while traveling up a mountain on the island of Sulawesi (Sue-lu-way-see).

Esselstyn says he often visits Indonesia to see how mammal diversity has evolved over time. He says this species, called the Hog-nosed rat, has a large pink nose, extremely large ears and long legs.

Esselstyn says they found a similar species last year and expect to find even more in years to come. He says there are many other tropical, mountainous islands like Sulawesi (Sue-lu-way-see) that are yet to be surveyed for mammal diversity.

The 2016-17 Louisiana Economic Outlook report shows the state’s economy will continue to feel the effects of low oil prices, but industrial booms in certain areas will create major job growth. Economist and co-author of the report Dr. Loren Scott says the biggest gains will be seen from Baton Rouge to Lake Charles…:

Meanwhile Scott says growth in the northern part of the state will remain mostly stagnant over the next couple of years with just a small amount of job losses predicted. He says areas in the oil patch around Houma and the Acadiana region will continue to struggle…:

The forecast projects, overall, Louisiana will add 15,400 jobs in 2016 and 19,600 in 2017. He says the report clearly indicates that Louisiana would really benefit by a rebound in the energy sector…:

Even though it’s mid-October it will feel like summer again today as high temperatures will be in the 90s across much of Louisiana. Shreveport broke a 134 year-old record when temps reached the mid-90s yesterday. Brandi Hughes, with the National Weather Service, says dry conditions are helping to produce summer like weather…

The high temperatures today are expected to be in the mid-90s in north Louisiana, which would break the previous record high of 91 that was established in 1947 in both Monroe and Shreveport. Hughes says the record broken yesterday goes back even further…

Hughes says it will feel more like fall this weekend as a cold front will knock high temperatures back down to the 70s for much of the state

The Saints look to turn their season around tonight when they host the Atlanta Falcons. The Dirty Birds are undefeated, while New Orleans is 1-4 and rank last in the NFL in total defense. But Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan believes they have enough talent to become one of the better teams in the league…

We saw record high temperatures in north Louisiana today and more are expected tomorrow. Highs tomorrow in north Louisiana are expected to be in the mid 90s.

A new Orleans television station is reporting that two people were killed when a small merchant plane crashed at the Hammond airport this afternoon. A cause of the crash is not known.

The head of LSU’s Public Policy Research Lab says were seeing a lot more negative commercials for this governor’s race compared to 2003, which was the last compeitive race for governor we had in Lousiaina. Michael Henderson says we can expect to see more negative ads as we approach election day and head into a runoff…

Legal analyst Tim Meche says it’s too early in the process to anticipate how this case will turn out…

Meanwhile a new WAFB-TV/Raycom Media poll shows Democrat John Bel Edwards is leading the race with 24% support, Vitter is in second place at 21% and Republicans Jay Dardenne and Scott Angelle trail with 8% and 7% respectively. However, of the 602 respondents, a whopping 37% percent say they remain undecided on who to vote for governor next Saturday.

The 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing to death an 18-year-old St. Amant High student before the homecoming dance has been identified and he will be tried as an adult. A state judge in Ascension Parish ruled today that Jacob Westbrook of Baton Rouge’s second degree murder trial will not be heard in Juvenile Court. Westbrook is accused of killing 18-year-old Todd “TJ” Toups Jr. with a steak knife on October 10th in Gonzales.

State Ag & Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says they are investigating the cause of wildfires through 6 parishes in north Louisiana which destroyed thousands of acres of land. He says one of the fires was caused by a lightning strike, another caused by a person burning a tree stump, while the others were deliberately set. Strain warns people who commit arson, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law…:

The LSU Tigers will face the Florida Gators on Saturday night. It’s not been a quite week in Gainesville. It all started with the one-year suspension for starting quarterback Will Grier for taking a banned over-the-counter supplement. Now a freshman defensive back, Deiondre Porter, has been suspended indefinitedly for allegedly firing a gun in the direction of his pregnant girlfriend.

LSU Coach Les Miles says fullback JD Moore will not play against eighth ranked Florida. Moore went down with a knee injury last Saturday against South Carolina. Miles says it would be great if Moore can return for the Western Kentucky game on October 24th.

Louisiana Tech continues preparations for its trip to Mississippi State by piping in the sound of cow bells ringing while they practice. Mississippi State has won eight of the eleven match-ups between the two schools and kick-off on Saturday is at 11 AM.

In the Southland Conference this weekend…Nicholls State seeks its first win of the year as they Houston Baptist. McNeese State looks to stay undefeated as they visit Central Arkansas. Northwestern State is coming off a bye week and they’ll host Lamar, while Southeastern Louisiana takes on Stephen F Austin in Hammond. Lions leading receiver Jeff Smiley is out for the year with a torn ACL.

In the SWAC this weekend….It’s homecoming for Southern as they take on Prairie View, while Grambling travels to Alcorn State in a matchup of two teams undefeated in league play.

Though his opponents criticize Vitter for not showing up to some debates, his campaign says they’ve participated in 35 debates and forums this year. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says most people say Vitter doesn’t want to risk being questioned about scandals from his past…:

Authorities say an LSU student is under arrest on terrorizing charges after allegedly screaming into a CB radio statements about guns and shootings on the top of the student union parking garage. LSU police say they found 21-year-old Richard Aaron Bee of Mandeville wearing camouflage when he was taken into custody. Bail had not been set as of Wednesday.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office says a local comedian has been arrested on counts including identity theft. They say 42-year-old Jennifer Kober, originally from Lake Charles but now living in California, is accused of using a family member’s debit card without permission and stealing her identify to obtain utility services for her current residence. Kober bonded out of jail and promised on her Facebook page that she’d tell the full “hilarious” story at a show next week in Lake Charles.

State Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain say authorities are searching for an arsonist who was responsible for several fires set across north Louisiana. Strain says state firefighters were battling ten fires in six different parishes yesterday and he believes some of them were intentionally set.

Strain says crews worked to put out fires in Caddo, Claiborne, Morehouse, Bienville West Carroll and Sabine parishes. He says it took until 1 AM this morning to get all of the fires under control. The commissioner says unfortunately one home in Bienville Parish was destroyed, but no one was injured….

The 16-year-old accused of stabbing to death an 18-year-old in Gonzales on October 10th will be tried as an adult. A state judge in Ascension Parish ruled today that the suspect can also be identified as Jacob Westbrook of Baton Rouge and he’s charged with second degree murder in the death of Todd “TJ” Toups Jr. Authorities believe Westbook stabbed Toups to death with a steak knife before the St. Amant High homecoming dance.

LSU says a student has been arrested on a charge of terrorizing after authorities say he was on top of the student union parking garage screaming about guns and shootings. The reports came in from a 911 call center in West Baton Rouge Parish. 21-year-old Richard Aaron Bee was allegedly making the statements into a CB radio while wearing camouflage. He was booked into parish prison.

An LSU student has been booked into Parish Prison on a count of terrorizing after authorities say he was standing on top of the student union parking garage in camouflage and talking on a citizens band radio about guns and shootings. The threats lead to a lock down Tuesday of the garage according to university police. Bail has not been set for 21-year-old Richard Aaron Bee of Mandeville.
