Cardell Hayes was indicted today on charges of murder for former Saints player Will Smith, and attempted murder of Smith’s wife. Legal analyst Tim Meche says he’s not surprised the D-A’s office was able to get an indictment, before the defense was able to call witnesses to the stand during today’s preliminary hearing…:

After the indictment, Hayes plead not guilty to four charges. His bond has been set at 1.75 million dollars.

The FBI has created a devoted phone line for tips about the newly reopened missing child case of Wesley Dale Morgan of Clinton who was last seen in 2001. Authorities report the phone has not stopped ringing with tips so a dedicated line has been created for anyone who may know where Wesley Morgan is. The number is 1- (800) CALL-FBI.

You couldn’t hire or fire someone based on their sexual orientation under a bill that was approved in a Senate committee today. New Orleans Senator Troy Carter says discrimination is still alive, and lawmakers need to do what they can to protect people from that in the workplace…:

The alleged shooter of the former Saints player Will Smith has been indicted on charges of second degree murder and attempted murder. Legal analyst Tim Meche says it looks like the Orleans Parish District Attorney is handling the case against Cardell Hayes cautiously.

The indictment came down during the middle of a preliminary hearing that was called to establish probable cause against Hayes. Hayes’ Attorney John Fuller said in court today that the prosecution is trying to jam an indictment down. Meche says the DA is just going through the procedure according to the law.

Two people are dead after a shootout involving a police officer in the small southwest Louisiana town of Carlyss. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says his officers were responding to a 911 call for an armed robbery when they got another call from a man saying people were running through his field close to the location of the burglary. Mancuso says deputies met the individuals in the field.

Mancuso says the suspect fired several shots at the deputies before the officers returned fire. The sheriff says the suspect either died from a gunshot wound from one of his deputies or he killed himself. He says when police approached the suspect, they found another victim.

Mancuso says there was also a female child in the field, and she is unharmed. He says two investigations are ongoing.

Governor John Bel Edwards says the special interest group that’s running attack ads accusing him of breaking his promise about keeping existing school vouchers is not telling the truth. He told reporters Thursday that no student currently receiving a voucher, would lose it…:

Edwards says he’s been told by the Department of Education that there is no plan to take a voucher away from a student, and that he is disingenuously being called a liar. He told a pro-voucher man at the news conference that he never said he was going to zero out funding for vouchers…:

A poll commissioned by the Louisiana Cannabis Association reveals 72 percent of Louisiana voters are in favor of the medical marijuana legislation. Just 13 percent surveyed by JMC Enterprises opposed patients’ usage of medical marijuana. A bill to extend use of medical marijuana to those with serious medical conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, seizure disorders and epilepsy passed through the Louisiana State Senate.

KATC is reporting that a Vermilion Parish teacher is behind bars accused of rape. They say James Harber, a 7th grade teacher at JH Williams Middle School, was booked by Abbeville Police with two counts of second-degree rape and one count of first-degree rape.

For a second straight year, LSU might not have a player selected in the first round. But there are a few mock drafts that have Deion Jones getting selected tonight. Jones fast 40 time has many teams looking at the outside linebacker.

In college baseball…the 11th ranked LSU Tigers visit the 13th ranked Ole Miss Rebels tonight for the start of a three-game series in Oxford. But Graves says Louisiana’s control of red snapper fishing has been extended nine miles off the coast, which gives fishermen more opportunity to fish red snapper..:

Today is a big day in the Will Smith homicide case. The man accused of fatally shooting the former Saints star, Cardale Hayes, has a preliminary hearing scheduled at 10 AM. But the hearing may not take place, if the district attorney can get a grand jury to indict Hayes. If no indictment, then the hearing will determine if there’s enough evidence to keep Hayes behind bars until a trial.
