The LSU baseball team is enjoying a day off in Birmingham today. The Tigers have advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament after winning three games this week. The Bayou Bengals beat Mississippi State six to two, behind strong pitching from Jared Poche and three RBIs from catcher Michael Papierski. LSU will play tomorrow against the winner of tonight’s game between Florida and Mississippi State.

In the Southland Conference today, McNeese State eliminated UNO 8-4 after a 13-inning battle with the Privateers. Freshman Shane Selman had four hits and 3 RBIs on the day. Selman had a two-out, two run triple in the 13th inning and Collin Kober picked up the win in relief. McNeese will face Southeastern tonight. The Lions blanked the Cowboys 10-0 yesterday.

And UL Lafayette doubled up Texas State four to two in the Sun Bel Tourney. The Cajuns will play again tomorrow against the winner of tonight’s game between Texas State and Arkansas State.

Former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan told Monday Morning Quarterback that the defenses the last two seasons in New Orleans were not his, instead he was forced to try and mimic the Seattle Seawhawks defensive scheme. But Head Coach Sean Payton says it’s silly to think Ryan wasn’t in charge of the defense and added the Black and Gold struggled with fundamentals last season.

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork and chancellor Jeffrey Vitter confirm serious violations have occurred within the Rebels athletic program. 13 of the allegations involve the football team, which is why the school has placed a self-imposed double-digit reduction in scholarships for football. Ole Miss is also asking for the NCAA to delay a hearing with the Committee on Infractions so they can determine if former offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil received improper benefits while playing for the Rebels.

The LSU softball team lost the first game of its super regional series with James Madison by the score of three to two. That means the Tigers will need to win twice tomorrow to advance to the College World Series.

Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a call for a second special session to address a 600-million dollar shortfall for the fiscal year that begins June 1st. The special session will convene on Monday night, June 6th and it must adjourn by midnight June 23rd. Edwards says the session is necessary to fully fund TOPS, health care, K-through-12 education and public colleges. The governor says his legislative package calls for several responsible revenue-raising measures.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 12 parishes in central and southwest Louisiana until nine o’ clock tonight. A Houma man has been arrested on 37 counts of child pornography involving Juveniles under the age of 13. 29-year-old Nollie Verrett was charged after being investigated by Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Cyber Crime Unit. Verrett was booked into the Lafourche Parish Jail.

A Louisiana man has died after being stung by more than a thousand bees in a park in Arizona. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Joaquin Enriquez says 23-year-old Alex Bestler of Elton and a friend were hiking in the Usery Mountain Park when they were attacked by a swarm of bees. He says Bestler’s friend was able to escape into a bathroom, but Bestler was overcome by the swarm.

Enriquez says sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and EMS were immediately called to the scene. He says Sgt. Romer with the Sheriff’s Lake Patrol suited up in his jacket and gloves and duct taped his sleeves to the gloves before commandeering a utility vehicle and braving the swarm to retrieve Bestler.

Enriquez says the park is closed through the weekend pending an investigation. He says Bestler was completely covered in bees.

An arrest has been made in the murder of East Feliciana School Board member, Broderick Brooks, who was found dead in his vehicle in north Baton Rouge earlier this week. Cpl. L’Jean Mckneely says 19-year-old Jaquez Griffin has been charged with first degree murder.

Brooks was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds at 3:30 am on May 23. Mckneely says Griffin has been booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He says the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Grillers are in luck as there is plenty of beef to cook up this Memorial Day weekend. CEO of the Cattle Producers of Louisiana Dave Foster says beef was sold to retailers at a lower price compared to previous years and so consumers should see some good deals out there…

Foster says this is a big part of the season for beef producers, especially because Father’s Day is also around the corner. He says meat lovers should enjoy decent prices for the summer, because cattle prices on the market are lower this year.

Former Sulphur police officer Brian Theirbach has been sentenced to one-year supervised probation for shooting a dog while responding to a call in April 2014. The dog owner’s said his dog was not aggressive and the shooting was unwarranted. Thierbach pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.

Former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan says the defense on the field in his last two years in New Orleans was not his. In an interview with the Monday Morning Quarterback, Ryan says the Saints tried to copy the Seahawks and blames himself for not telling Coach Sean Payton they should try to do something else. The Saints fired Ryan last November as the team finished next to last in total defense the last two seasons. Payton says it’s silly for Ryan to say he wasn’t in charge of the defense.

LSU Junior left-handed pitcher Jared Poche was on his game last night as the Tigers defeated Mississppi State six to two to advance to Saturday’s semifinals of the SEC Tournament. Poche won his 25th game at LSU as he gave up one earned run. Parker Bugg picked up his fourth save and sophomore catcher Michael Papierski drove in three runs. The Tigers will play tomorrow, the winner of tonight’s game between Mississippi State and Florida.

Louisiana Tech will look to stay alive in the Conference USA Tournament as they face Florida Atlantic this afternoon. The Bulldogs offense ahs been on a role as they’ve scored 10 or more runs in four of their last five games. Today’s meeting against the Owls is the first time Tech has faced F-A-U this year.

In the Southland Conference, UNO and McNeese State play this morning. Southeastern Louisiana plays the winner of that game this afternoon. The Lions blanked McNeese 10-0 yesterday in Sugar Land, Texas. Webb Bobo blasted a three-run homer in the victory.

UL-Lafayette plays Texas State in the Sun Belt Tournament.

The Cajuns softball team lost eight to two to Oklahoma in game one of their super regional series last night. Game two is tonight and LSU begins its Super Regional series with James Madison at two this afternoon.

NOAA is predicting we’ll see between 10-to-16 named storms during the 2016 hurricane season. Federal forecasters believe we’ll also see between four to eight hurricanes with one to four major hurricanes. During an average season, we see 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The Edwards administration has told the Senate Finance committee that the changes the House made to next fiscal year’s budget are unacceptable. Legislators have been struggling with how to fund state services, because of a 600-million dollar shortfall. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says the House’s attempt to shift money around will not work…

One of Dardenne’s biggest concerns is with how the House shifted dollars around to put more money towards the TOPS Scholarship.

Governor Edwards has signed the Blue Lives Matter Bill into law, which makes Louisiana the first in the nation to expand its hate crime laws to protect police, firefighters and EMS crews. Author of the legislation, Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says the new law allows prosecutors to seek tougher penalties against individuals who intentionally target first responders because of their profession.
