Many people are left wondering if the fatal police shooting of Alton Sterling was justified after watching multiple videos of the incident. 40-year-old Shannon Labit is being laid to rest today after he was killed outside his home on Sunday during a standoff with Iberia Parish Sheriff’s deputies. Labit’s nephew, Jeremy Randazzo, says his uncle was mentally disabled and now witnesses are coming forward stating the incident shouldn’t have gone this way. He says they’re hoping to get the federal government to investigate the shooting.

Law enforcement around Louisiana are getting ready for a potential threat here after the Dallas attacks that left five police officers dead and injured seven others. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says there is concern that a similar incident could happen here because a suspect in the Dallas shooting told authorities he was upset about the police violence in Baton Rouge and Minnesota.

The funeral is today for 40-year-old Shannon Labit (La-beet) who was shot and killed on Sunday during a standoff outside his home with Iberia Parish Sheriff’s deputies. Labit’s nephew, Jeremy Randazzo, says his uncle struggled with paranoid schizophrenia since he was a teenager and believes there is a lack of specialized training in the department when it comes to dealing with people with mental illnesses. He says the amount of officers that showed up to respond to the stabbing in the area is what caused Labit into a manic episode.

Thirteen people have been arrested in Gonzales on charges related to prostitution. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Narcotics Detectives along with other local agencies began the undercover operation by reaching out to possible prostitutes online and arranging a meeting. Authorities say some of the people arrested were listing their services online by disguising themselves as escorts.

The parents of a two-year-old boy found in a pastic garbage bag on a levee in Jefferson Parish are behind bars this morning. Twenty-one-year-old Gabrielle Whittington and Onterio Thompson have been charged with unlawful disposal of human remains and obstruction of justice. The coroner estimates the child may have been buried in the ground for at least two weeks and there’s no obvious cause of death, because the body was badly decomposed

Statistics published by Huffington Post show that since 2005, 13 officers have been convicted of murder or manslaughter in on-duty fatal shootings, even though there have been hundreds of police shootings during that time. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says we haven’t seen a lot of convictions when it comes to fatal police shootings, but that’s all changed now with cell phone videos..:
