Authorities in Baton Rouge have arrested a fourth person who was allegedly involved in a pawn shop burglary where guns were stolen that would be used to kill police officers. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office says a 12-year-old male juvenile was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center for simple burglary and theft of a firearm. Three other suspects are also in custody. Officials say eight handguns were stolen during the break-in last weekend.

The funeral service for Alton Sterling, the black man shot during a confrontation with white police officers was a peaceful one. There was a steady stream of mourners who walked past his open casket during a somber service on the campus of Southern University yesterday. Barry Davison says he came to support the family during this difficult time. He’s hopeful something positive will come of this tragedy….

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore has announced that over half of the protestors who were arrested following the shooting death of Alton Sterling will not face charges. Moore says he will not prosecute about 100 of the cases, because the demonstrators were arrested only on misdemeanor counts, simple obstruction of a highway. The ACLU in Louisiana says the protestors should never have been arrested in the first place.

Louisiana’s health department says enrollment for the state’s expanded Medicaid program, known as Healthy Louisiana, has reached 250-thousand new adults. According to the L-D-H, Healty Louisiana will bring health insurance coverage to an estimated 375-thousand working Louisianans.

And the Louisiana Department of Education has announced Sedric Clark, the principal at Mansfield High in DeSoto Parish is the principal of the year, while Joni Smith, a seventh grade science teacher at Albany Middle School in Livingston Parish is the teacher of the year.

Running back Leonard Fournette, center Ethan Pocic, linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White are the four LSU players who made the media’s preseason All-SEC team. Fournette rushed for nearly two-thousand yards and 22 touchdowns last season. He was asked at SEC Media Days, how he can improve on those numbers in 2016…

A three-year-old horse bred in Arkansas named “Fournette” won in his first ever race at Belmont Race Track in New York. His odds to win at post time were 14-to-1. Fournette’s owner is from Hot Springs and is a big LSU fan.

Ragin Cajuns running back Elijah McGuire is one of 43 players on the Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award, which goes to college football’s most versatile player. The Houma native is the only active NCAA player with three-thousand yards rushing and one-thousand yards receiving.

Grambling State, the defending champs in the SWAC’s Western Division, is picked to finish second in that division based on a vote by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Prairie View is the preseason favorite to win the division. Southern was picked to finish third. Jaguars running back Lenard Tillery is the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. Tillery has rushed for over one-thousand yards the last two seasons.

The Pelicans lost to the D-League Select team and have been eliminated from Summer League competition in Las Vegas. First round pick Buddy Hield struggled with his shot again and had 11 points in the 88-76 loss. Hield shot 33-percent from the field and 23-percent from three point territory in five summer league games.

Former University High of Baton Rouge golfer Patrick Reed has some work to do, if he wants to be among the leaders at the British OPen. Reed shot a 74 yesterday and is eight shots back of leader Phil Mickelson as the third round is underway.

ULM political science professor Dr. Joshua Stockley says US Representative John Fleming reports $2.4 million in his campaign funds and State Treasurer John Kennedy has collected $1.4 million. Stockley says name recognition give Kennedy an advantage.

A wrong way driver on I-20 in Monroe also died in a fiery crash following a head on collision with an 18 wheeler. 31-year-old Christopher Moss of Calhoun crossed the median for unknown reasons then smashed into the big rig.

Sheriff Newell Normand says deputies were involved in a high speed chase after seeing a vehicle linked to multiple car burglaries. He says 40-year-old Melissa Belanger used her truck as a weapon against officers so a deputy fired shots hitting her wrists. The sheriff says she’ll be charged once released from the hospital.

Tough day for former University High of Baton Rouge golfer Patrick Reed as he shot a three-over, 74 during the second round of the Britsh Open. Reed is eight shots back of leader Phil Mickelson, who is 10-under par.

The Democratic campaign fundraising for the US Senate race has been unimpressive thus far, according to ULM political science professor Joshua Stockley. Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell has reported $868-thousand in the bank, and Caroline Fayard has $643-thousand on hand. Stockley says the Democrats got off to a late start in fundraising, and they are basically splitting the available campaign dollars from Democratic donors.

Thousands gathered today at the Southern University F.G. Clark Activity Center for Alton Sterling’s funeral service. Jack Turner with the Revolution Club in Atlanta says he came to the service because there is an epidemic of police shootings.

There was another police shooting today. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says they are working to get additional warrants and the investigation is ongoing. He says the fact that 40-year-old Melissa Belanger tried to run over the officer with her vehicle justifies the use of force by the deputy.

Normand says they believe Belanger has a drug addiction and was using the money from robbing cars to feed her habit.

An Ascension Parish jury says a Prairieville man is guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals for beating a dog to death with a baseball bat in 2014. 33-year-old Merritt Evans argued that the dog was injured from being stuck in a barbed wire fence, but doctors testified that the animal died of blunt force trauma. Jackson faces up to 10 years in prison.
