Medicaid will now cover mosquito repellant for pregnant women in an effort to fight against the Zika virus. The program allows doctors to prescribe mosquito repellant for women who are on Medicaid, and the pregnancy approved repellants are covered. The Department of Health urges women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant to always use mosquito repellant, because Zika can cause a baby to be born with serious birth defects.

State education officials announce a higher percentage of public school students scored at the “mastery” level in English and Math. The results are based on the LEAP tests that were taken last Spring. Superintendent John White says this is good news but unfortunately some white and higher income students are doing significantly better than others…

White is also concerned that too few students are fully prepared for college.

Authorities are working to ID the remains of a woman who was burned. Chief Deputy Mike Haley, with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s office, says 41-year-old Joey Mixon has been charged with murder in the woman’s brutal death. Haley says they know Mixon knew the victim and got into an argument with her, but there’s still a lot of unanswewred question…

Officials believe the victim is from St. Tammany Parish.

Louisiana is seeing a huge spike in the number of international visitors. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says 36% more people from other countries visited The Bayou State over the prior year. He wants to continue to see this rise and credits the efforts of Louisianians putting their best foot forward…:

Nungesser says this is the third consecutive year of double digit growth in international visitors.

The state department of education says there was a five-percent increase in the number of students who achieved “mastery” scores on standardized tests that were taken this past spring. But education superintendent John White says there’s still a wide gap between the percentage of black and white students who are achieving the Mastery level…

The body of a pilot and a helicopter that crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin were found this morning by search crews. The identity of the pilot has not been released, but t is believed he was the only person on board,. The wreckage was found in Iberia Parish and the chopper is owned by Texas-based Gulf Coast Helicopters Incorporated.

Authorities are working to determine the identity of a woman who was murdered and burned beyond recognition near Bogalusa. Washington Parish Sheriff Chief Deputy Mike Haley says they received a call early Wednesday morning about a murder at the residence of 41-year-old Joey Mixon.

Haley says after the confession, Mixon led detectives to the location of the body, which was badly burned. Officials believe the victim is from St. Tammany parish. He says her family has been notified and provided DNA for identification.

Haley says Mixon has been booked on one count of second degree murder. He says they know Mixon knew the victim and they’d gotten into an argument, but they still have a lot of unanswered questions.

But he says given how quiet the last three years have been, this season will seem a lot more active…

Klotzbach says the season will really pick up in the middle of August. He says there is a 29-percent chance of a major hurricane making landfall on the Gulf Coast.

Klotzbach says an El Nino the last couple of years kept hurricane activity down. He says we don’t have an El Nino, which will lead to more tropical storms.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man for allegedly murdering a woman then disposing of her body. They say 41-year-old Joey Mixon confessed to the crime and let detectives to the victims body which had been so badly burned…:

A former assistant administrator for the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home is facing charges amid allegations he was stealing from an infirm resident. 51-year-old Thomas Shoemaker is charged with exploitation of the infirmed and theft of the assets of an aged person or disabled person. The victim suffered from several ailments including dementia. Shoemaker is accused of, among other things, using the victims ATM card without permission.

The body of the pilot of the helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin Wednesday has been located. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says several agencies worked this morning to locate the aircraft and the pilot. The wreckage site is in the Grand Lake area. The pilot was the only person on board. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Louisiana leaders held a news conference Thursday morning to provide information related to a federal grant for transportation infrastructure. Gov. John Bel Edwards said $20-$25 million of savings brought on by the grants will be used to create a new I-10 off-ramp at the Washington Street exit in Baton Rouge.

The state Department of Education announced today that students in Louisiana are starting to reach higher levels of proficiency on state tests. This year 38 percent of students mastered math and English, compared to 33 percent in 2015. Superintendent John White says the trend indicates that students, teachers, and schools are adjusting to higher expectations implemented through a four-year transition period.

A helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin has been found, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, but officials are still searching for the pilot. They say the aircraft, which was privately owned, was initially flying from Gonzales to New Orleans, but had to reroute due to a patch of bad weather.

The workforce training program in Louisiana has been named the best in the nation by the corporate site selection website, Business Facilities. Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson says FastStart has helped over 150 companies in Louisiana and provided training for more than 23-thousand employees in the past 8 years…:

Fall camp is underway at LSU as the Tigers held their first practice of the 2016 season this morning. LSU is considered one of the favorites to win the Southeastern Conference and play in the College Football Playoff. They’ll need to get good play from quarterback Brandon Harris. Coach Les Miles says he likes the poise the junior brings to the field…

Veterans practiced this morning and the freshman will practice this afternoon.

Fall camp is also underway for the Ragin Cajuns. UL Lafayette has a new offensive coordinator in Jorge Munoz and there’s a battle for starting quarterback. Jordan Davis and LSU transfer Anthony Jennings are competing for the job.

LSU is ranked sixth in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Alabama is ranked number one, followed by Clemson, Oklahoma, Florida State and Ohio State. Tennessee is ranked 10th, Ole Miss 12th, Georgia 16th, and Florida 25th.

Fall practice began this morning for the ULM Warhawks. First year head coach Matt Viator says there will be a lot installing on offense, defense and special teams, plus reteaching what they taught in the spring.

Viator’s old school, McNeese State, has also started fall camp. The Cowboys return 13 starters from a team that went 10-0 in the regular season last year.

Southeastern Louisiana is glad to have running back Rasheed Harrell and fullback Juwaan Rogers back on the football field as the Lions start fall camp. Both watched from the sidelines last year as S-L-U went 4-and-7.

And Former LSU baseball star Ryan Schimpf has been named the National Legue Rookie of the Month for July. The Covington native hit a franchise record nine home runs last month for the Padres.

The civilian helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin yesterday has been found, according to Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal. Authorities say they’re still searching for the pilot. Ackal says the helicopter was privately owned. The pilot was initially flying from Gonzales to New Orleans but rerouted to Patterson after hitting stormy weather.

Attorney Lance Unglesby denies allegations that Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa bribed Gonzales city council candidate, Wayne Lawson, to drop out of the race. Jeff Palermo has more on the case…

A man in Baton Rouge is facing charges amid allegations he ordered his pit bulls to attack workers who came to his home to cut electricity because he’d not paid his bill. It’s reported that 47-year-old Michael Barcia then instructed the dogs to attack two responding sheriff’s deputies. He faces charges of aggravated assault and public intimidation.
