Just as lawmakers started coming together on ways to plug the current year budget deficit, the situation is reportedly worse than they thought. According to Gannett News, legislators were informed last night that one of the revenue generating bills won’t bring in money in time to help the current $900 million dollar deficit. They say there is still a $142 million dollar hole they must fill before the special session ends on Wednesday.

Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and former President Bill Clinton have planned rallies in the New Orleans area today ahead of the Louisiana Presidential Primary tomorrow. Clinton was also in Baton Rouge last night stumping for his wife Hillary. Secretary of state Tom Schedler reminds voters that this is a closed primary…:

Polls will open at 7 am and close at 8 pm. Schedler expects a much larger turnout than 2012.

Troopers in Baton Rouge and Monroe are now able to check if a driver has car insurance automatically when they pull someone over. State Police Major Doug Cain says they hope to have this system running statewide soon. He says insurance companies provide cops with information that will pop up directly on the officer’s screen when they pulls someone over…:

He says 12-15% of Louisiana drivers aren’t insured which is one of the reasons our rates are so high, so he hopes they can catch more people with this system.

Another teacher in St. Charles Parish is facing charges related to having inappropriate conduct with a student. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed 30-year-old Jeremy Eusea, a teacher at Hahnville High, is booked with sexual battery and prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student.

The administration found that one of the bills that was expected to generate revenue, won’t be here in time to help the current budget. Marksville Representative Robert Johnson says he’s concerned about all the taxes that keep coming up that are hitting consumers. He feels business needs to “share in the pain” of the deficit…:

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education last night endorsed revisions to the Common Core academic standards put together by a 26 member panel called the Standards Review Committee. Lawmakers passed a law last year requiring a group to come up with Louisiana’s own standards to end years of arguments over Common Core. Revisions are now subject to public comment and legislative approval.

Injured Southern University football player Devon Gales returns to Baton Rouge tomorrow after several months in Georgia rehab for neck fractures he sustained in a game The Bulldogs last September. Southern Sports Information Director Chris Jones says Gales will be reunited with his teammates at A.W. Mumford Field house Saturday then will be honored at Southern after the women’s basketball game in the F.G. Clark Activity Center…:

We finally started seeing some movement at the Capitol Thursday as the Senate Finance committee approved 37 million dollars in cuts and the full House sent a cigarette tax increase bill to the upper chamber. But Covington Representative John Schroder says even though they are closing in on fixing this fiscal year’s $900 million dollar shortfall, there is another deficit to consider for FY 17 which begins July 1:

The special session must end Wednesday.

At least three presidential campaigns hit Louisiana today, with the state primaries looming tomorrow. Donald Trump plans to rally at the Lakefront airport in New Orleans. Senator Ted Cruz makes an appearance in Metairie. Democrat Hillary Clinton sent her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to Baton Rouge last night, then in New Orleans today to drum up support for her campaign.

State officials remind voters that tomorrow’s Presidential Primary is a closed election. The means only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote. Secretary of State Tom Schedler encourages voters to check out the GeauxVote app…:

Two people were killed and another injured in an overnight early morning house fire in Baton Rouge. Investigators say an injured woman told responders that she tried to run into the house and rescue her father and son and that’s when she was burned. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

In the NBA it was another rough game for the Pelicans Thursday night as they fall to the Spurs at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans 94-86. Anthony Davis had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Pels, which dropped its third straight.

College hoops — the ULM men’s basketball is now 12-0 on the season in Monroe after winning their 8th in a row last night against Georgia Southern 83-76. It’s been nearly a decade since the Warhawks went undefeated on its home court.

Grambling State sailed past Alabama A&M last night 65-58 which puts an end to the Tigers’ 11 game losing streak.

Southeastern Louisiana edged UNO 61-60 in New Orleans. Louisiana Tech gets the win over Marshall 97-94. Northwestern State was beat up by Stephen F Austin, 95-55. Nicholls beats Central Arkansas 68-64. UL-Lafayette fell to Georgia State 72-69.

It’ll be a nice weekend for college baseball as games resume throughout the state today.

UL-Lafayette will have to vacate 22 football games between 2011 and 2014, as a result of a two-year NCAA Committee investigation into allegations a former coach faked ACT scores for recruits which means they weren’t eligible to play. State Police introduces a real-time auto insurance monitoring system to catch motorists who are uninsured. Major Doug Cain says this system, which will be used in the Baton Rouge and Monroe areas first, will provide police with the ability to know at a traffic stop or accident if the driver is actually insured.

The Insurance Research Council reports 12 to 15 percent of Louisiana drivers are not insured. Cain says the system being used right now is completely dependent on the insurance companies providing police with the correct information in a timely manner and often times there are lapses. He says now that data will pop up directly on the officer’s computer screen.

Cain says they hope this new system will catch more uninsured motorists, which is one reason why Louisiana has some of the highest insurance rates in the country. He says people driving without auto insurance effect everyone on the road.

Injured Southern football player Devon Gales is scheduled to return home Saturday, and Southern University has planned festivities to celebrate his homecoming. Gales has spent the past four months undergoing rehabilitation in Atlanta after sustaining a severe neck injury. Southern Sports Information Director Chris Jones says Gales has received support from people throughout the South.

Gales will arrive at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport at 11am Saturday, where he will be greeted by Southern University athletic officials. Gales was paralyzed while playing against UGA in September. Jones says that Gales’ positive attitude has had an impact on people around the state.

Johnson says he is concerned about all the taxes that keep coming up that are hitting consumers. He says business needs to “share in the pain” of the deficit.

The TOPS Scholarship program could undergo changes in the next few years, as lawmakers have started filing bills for the regular session regarding the program. Jennings Senator Blade Morrish says he has filed about a dozen TOPS-related bills, including one that would limit the amount TOPS recipients would receive.

Morrish says lawmakers attempted to cap the amount of the dollars going to TOPS last year, but the bill was vetoed by former-Governor Bobby Jindal.

UL-Lafayette will have to vacate 22 football games between 2011 and 2014, as a result of a two-year NCAA Committee investigation. The committee determined that a former assistant coach falsified ACT scores for five students, meaning those students were ineligible to play. Games involving ineligible players led to vacating those victories. Jay Walker, the voice of the Ragin Cajuns, says he understands the committee’s ruling.

Eight victories from the 2011 season, four from 2012, eight from 2013 and two from 2014 will be vacated, including two New Orleans Bowl championships in 2011 and 2013 and the 2013 Sun Belt Conference championship.

 

A man accused of being a member of the Gremlins street gang turned himself in to police late Wednesday, according to Abbeville Chief Tony Hardy. He says 22-year-old Cody Guidry of Abbeville is one of 17 people indicted in connection with an investigation into gang activity in Louisiana. Five of the suspected members are still at large. Hardy says these men face many charges related to criminal street gang violations…:

In college baseball action last night…the LSU Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the third inning and beat the Nicholls Colonels nine to four. ULM looks to extend its winning streak to eight games when they host Georgia Southern at seven PM at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum. It’s the final two games at home for the seniors and Coach Keith Richard says they want to send them out as winners…
