Tonight, the Cajun John Wayne, Captain Clay Higgins, announces his political aspirations as he’s expected to announce a run for US Senate or the third Congressional district.

The Blue Lives Matter bill, which would charge people with a hate crime if they enact violence on police, firefighters or EMS, is headed to Governor John Bel Edwards desk. The Senate gave final passage on a 33-3 vote.

An arrest has been made in connection with the dead body that was found in the median of Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish. Two days before the discovery, State Police say they responded to a crash in the same area where they located a truck with significant damage, but the driver, 25-year-old Brodnick Whittington, was not at the scene. Troopers tied Whittington to the hit and run death of 35-year-old Jenise Williams. He is charged with felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving with an open container..

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden has announced his candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District Seat, challenging incumbent Cedric Richmond. Holden says he has accomplished great things for Baton Rouge in his 12 years as mayor, and he hopes to do the same in Congress. Holden adds he’s worked with other mayors to improve southeast Louisiana and intends to do that as a US Representative.

Holden says if elected, he will focus on the issues of the people, not Washington’s issues. He says global issues will be there, and he will work on those. But he wants to focus on what’s happening in the 2nd congressional district.

The Public Service Commissioner says his message to the people is don’t give up, help is on the way. Campbell says he also wants to raise the national minimum wage to 10 dollars an hour because no one in Louisiana can live off of $7.25.

A bill that would authorize a private company to install cameras that read license plates has been approved by a House committee. The cameras would be installed in sheriff’s vehicles in nine parishes to catch uninsured motorists. Lake Charles Senator Ronnie Johns authored the bill. He says we need to endure that all drivers have liability insurance.

The bill would also classify driving without insurance as probable cause for police to pull over a vehicle. Johns says this bill is simply about making sure people are obeying the law.

But Wendy Adams with the Libertarian Party opposes the bill. She says it would put people at risk for theft and fraud because driver’s private information would be stored.

Similar legislation has passed through the legislature before, but it was vetoed by former governor Bobby Jindal. Adams says this is a prime example of government overreach.

The Fighting Tigers baseball team won their ninth straight last night as they defeated Northwestern State seven to two. The top of the order was very good for LSU. Lead-off man Antoine Duplantis had three hits and the number two hitter, Jake Fraley, had a couple of RBIs. Jesse Stallings was the winning pitcher with two innings of relief.

UL Lafayette pounded UNO 17-4. It’s the first time the Cajuns have scored 17 runs since March 2014. Stefan Trosclair had three hits, drove in three and scored three times.

Nicholls upset 11th ranked Tulane two to nothing to sweep the season series. Adam Tarver struck out four in three innings to get the win.

In the latest NCAA Division one RPIs….LSU is 12, UL Lafayette is 20th, Tulane is 30th, Southeastern is 36th, Northwestern 40th and Louisiana Tech is 46.

The SWAC Tournament gets underway today in New Orleans at Wesley Barrow Stadium. At noon Grambling takes on Jackson State, while Southern battles Alabama State tonight.

LSU Football Coach Les Miles announces his coaching staff will hold “Satellite Camps” in north and south Louisiana during the first week of June. Miles says the new NCAA rule on satellite camps allow LSU to partner with instate schools to host these camps, which should benefit the likes of UL Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Southeastern and other Louisiana schools….

Democratic Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden announces he’s running for Congress. Holden will challenge Democratic US Representative Cedric Richmond for the 2nd Congressional District seat. The outspoken former sheriff’s deputy from St. Landry Parish, Captain Clay Higgins, is expected to announce tonight that he’s also decided to run for Congress, either in the 3rd District or US Senate.

Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee is slated to join Governor John Bel Edwards today for his monthly call-in radio show hosted by the Louisiana Radio Network. The governor’s office says they plan to discuss Medicaid expansion and talk with listeners about health and other issues of concern.

Two elementary coaches and three students have been charged amid allegations they were using “questionable disciplinary actions” against three younger students in St. Landry Parish. Major Eddie Thibodeaux says the PE teachers were allegedly telling the juvenile suspects to take other kids to the locker room and whip them with a belt. He says they also tried to cover it up which is why it’s important kids know they should tell their parents about stuff like this…:

Major changes have been made to the state’s sales tax holidays as a result of legislation approved in the special session. The Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax holiday which usually takes place the last weekend in May has been cancelled. And state department of revenue spokesperson Kizzy Payton says the back to school sales tax holiday, during the first weekend in August, and the 2nd amendment holiday, during the first weekend in September, will offer partial sales tax breaks this year and next…

A new study by LSU, UCLA, and NASA finds New Orleans and surrounding cities are sinking at high rates because of natural and human processes. Lead author of the report, Doctor Cathleen Jones, says the highest rates of sinking were observed upriver along the Mississippi around major industrial areas in Norco and Michoud. Jones says these kind of measurements can help in flood prevention planning…

State Police say a single vehicle crash in Rapides Parish claimed the life of a teenage passenger, and injured the driver – both unrestrained. They say 24-year-old Micah Baden of Pineville lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons, ran off the road and crashed into a semi-trailer in a private driveway. 16-year-old Chloe James of Ball was pronounced dead. Baden received moderate injuries.
