7:30 Sportscast May 28,2016

The LSU baseball team will face Florida once again this afternoon in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers have won three of four from the Gators over the last week, including a 14-inning affair on Wednesday night that ended early Thursday morning. The other SEC Tourney semifinal contest will be Ole Miss versus Texas A-and-M. That game gets underway at noon and then 30-minutes after that game it will be the Tigers and Gators. Caleb Gilbert will start on the mound for LSU.

LSU has also announced it will retire the jersey of All-American second baseman Todd Walker before a game during the 2017 season.

Louisiana Tech faces Rice again this morning in the Conference USA Tournament. The Bulldogs will need to beat the Owls twice to advance to the title game. Yesterday, first baseman Cody Daigle hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give Tech a 5-4 win over 13th ranked Florida Atlantic.

 
The Ragin Cajuns will play Arkansas State at 12:30 today in the Sun Belt Tournament. UL Lafayette needs just one win to advance to the conference title game. The Cajuns defeated Texas State 4-2 for their eighth straight win yesterday.

McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana will play each other this morning at 9 AM in the Southland Tournament. The Lions need to win once to advance to the tournament championship game, while the Cowboys will need to win twice today. S-L-U beat McNeese 10-0 on Thursday.

In the American Athletic Conference…Tulane will play HOuston at 9 AM. The Green Wave avoided elimination yesterday by blanking Central Florida five to nothing. Tulane will need to beat Houston twice to advance to the conference title game.

The LSU softball team needs two wins today over James Madison in order to advance to the Women’s College World Series. And Oklahoma eliminated UL Lafayette from the NCAA Tournament last night as the Sooners swept the Cajuns in their super regional series.

Governor John Bel Edwards has announced a second special session will begin on June 6th, just 30 minutes after the conclusion of the regular session. In the special session, Edwards will ask lawmakers to raise more revenues to fully fund TOPS, health care, K-through-12 education and public colleges.

An Allen Parish man has died after being stung by bees over a thousand times in an Arizona park. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Joaquin Enriquez says 23-year-old Alex Bestler and a friend were hiking in the Usery Mountain Park when they were attacked by a swarm of bees. He says Bestler’s friend was able to escape into a bathroom, but Bestler was overcome by the swarm.

Enriquez says the park is closed through the weekend pending an investigation.

A pregnant Thibodaux woman has been arrested after having a sexual relationship with a juvenile. Thibodaux Police Cpl. David Melancon says 24-year-old Alison Thibodaux has been charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Melancon says the juvenile and his mother came forward when they learned Thibodaux was pregnant.

The LSU baseball team is enjoying a day off in Birmingham today. The Tigers have advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament after winning three games this week. The Bayou Bengals beat Mississippi State six to two, behind strong pitching from Jared Poche and three RBIs from catcher Michael Papierski. LSU will play tomorrow against the winner of tonight’s game between Florida and Mississippi State.

In the Southland Conference today, McNeese State eliminated UNO 8-4 after a 13-inning battle with the Privateers. Freshman Shane Selman had four hits and 3 RBIs on the day. Selman had a two-out, two run triple in the 13th inning and Collin Kober picked up the win in relief. McNeese will face Southeastern tonight. The Lions blanked the Cowboys 10-0 yesterday.

And UL Lafayette doubled up Texas State four to two in the Sun Bel Tourney. The Cajuns will play again tomorrow against the winner of tonight’s game between Texas State and Arkansas State.

Former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan told Monday Morning Quarterback that the defenses the last two seasons in New Orleans were not his, instead he was forced to try and mimic the Seattle Seawhawks defensive scheme. But Head Coach Sean Payton says it’s silly to think Ryan wasn’t in charge of the defense and added the Black and Gold struggled with fundamentals last season.

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork and chancellor Jeffrey Vitter confirm serious violations have occurred within the Rebels athletic program. 13 of the allegations involve the football team, which is why the school has placed a self-imposed double-digit reduction in scholarships for football. Ole Miss is also asking for the NCAA to delay a hearing with the Committee on Infractions so they can determine if former offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil received improper benefits while playing for the Rebels.

Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a call for a second special session to address a 600-million dollar shortfall for the fiscal year that begins June 1st. The special session will convene on Monday night, June 6th and it must adjourn by midnight June 23rd. Edwards says the session is necessary to fully fund TOPS, health care, K-through-12 education and public colleges. The governor says his legislative package calls for several responsible revenue-raising measures.

Baton Rouge Police have arrested a teenager in the murder of East Feliciana Parish School Board member Broderick Brooks. Brooks was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in his vehicle earlier this week. 19-year-old Jacquez Tremaine Griffin was charged with first-degree murder and Baton Rouge Police corporal L’Jean MckNeely says a motive is still not known…

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 12 parishes in central and southwest Louisiana until nine o’ clock tonight. A Louisiana man has died after being stung by more than a thousand bees in a park in Arizona. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Joaquin Enriquez says 23-year-old Alex Bestler of Elton and a friend were hiking in the Usery Mountain Park when they were attacked by a swarm of bees. He says Bestler’s friend was able to escape into a bathroom, but Bestler was overcome by the swarm.

Enriquez says sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and EMS were immediately called to the scene. He says Sgt. Romer with the Sheriff’s Lake Patrol suited up in his jacket and gloves and duct taped his sleeves to the gloves before commandeering a utility vehicle and braving the swarm to retrieve Bestler.

Brooks was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds at 3:30 am on May 23. Mckneely says Griffin has been booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He says the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Former Sulphur police officer Brian Theirbach has been sentenced to one-year supervised probation for shooting a dog while responding to a call in April 2014. The dog owner’s said his dog was not aggressive and the shooting was unwarranted. Thierbach pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.
