According to oganizers of the Bayou Country Superfest, 100-thousand people attended the three-day country musical festival at LSU’s Tiger Stadium. That’s the second straight year there’s been an attendance drop.

The LSU Tigers are an eight national seed in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, which means they’ll host a Super Regional if they win this weekend’s regional at the Box. Rice, Southeastern Louisiana and Utah Valley are the other teams at the Baton Rouge Regional.

Memorial Day weekend is the official start to summer for many. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser is hoping the summer travel season will be a good one for Louisiana. He says low gas prices and plenty of things to do should attract tourists to the Bayou State, despite the hot temperatures…

On this Memorial Day, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.10, which is 38-cents lower than a year ago. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser hopes these low gas prices will bring in tourists from surrounding states…

Festival Productions Incorporated says the attendance for this year’s Bayou Country Superfest was 100,000, the lowest it’s been since 2014, which was the first year the musical festival inside Tiger Stadium was expanded to a three-day event.

State lawmakers will remain in Baton Rouge for most of June as a second special session is set to begin one week from today, 30 minutes after the ongoing regular session ends at 6 PM. Addressing a 600-million dollar revenue shortfall is the top priority. The governor’s communications director, Richard Carbo, says they’ll also ask legislators to tie up some loose ends from the first special session….

The 64-team NCAA Tournament baseball field will be unveiled this morning at 11 AM. We already know that LSU and UL Lafayette are two of the 16 host sites. Tulane is expected to get an at-large bid, the same could be said for Louisiana Tech who would make their first NCAA Regional appearance since 1987.

LSU and UL Lafayette have been selected as host sites for NCAA baseball regionals. It’s the fifth straight year the Tigers will host a regional and the third time it will happen for the Cajuns under head coach Tony Robichaux.

UL Lafayette gets to host after winning the Sun Belt Tournament Championship for a third consecutive year. The Cajuns blanked sixth seeded Georgia Southern five to nothing in San Marcos, Texas. Senior Nick Thurman homered and was named the Most Oustanding Player of the tournament. Sophomore Wyatt Marks earned the win by throwing seven scoreless innings.

We’ll find out who will play in the Baton Rouge and Lafayette regionals at 11 AM this morning. That’s when the 64-team bracket will be released. Louisiana Tech and Tulane are most likely in, while Southeastern Louisiana will have to wait anxiously after losing in the Southland Tournament championship game to Sam Houston State seven to four. The Lions record is 39-and-19.

The Pelicans organiziation remains in shock over the death of Bryce Dejean-Jones, who Dallas police say was fatally shot early Saturday morning after he broke into the wrong apartment. The 23-year-old Jones just signed a three-year contract with New Orleans. He was in Dallas for his daughter’s birthday and based on reports was trying to gain access to the apartment occupied by the child’s mother, but entered the wrong apartment and an alarmed resident shot him.

The LSU Softball squad is heading to the Women’s College World Series after winning its super regional series over James Madison. The Tigers had to win two games on Saturday to advance. They won the first game two to nothing, and three to two in game two. The Tigers first opponent in Oklahoma City will be Michigan on Thursday night at 8:30.

In honor of Memorial Day, Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, Joey Strickland encourages families to honor those who have died in war. He says many brave Louisianans have fought for our freedom.

Strickland says no matter how people feel about the war, they should still honor our veterans. Strickland says there is plenty that people can do for our veterans to honor their sacrifice and salute their service.

Today at 3pm is the National Moment of Remembrance. Strickland says seven Louisianans have died defending freedom. He says it’s important to keep our veterans in mind as families are gathering for crawfish boils and cookouts.

Strickland says there are events celebrating veterans around the state today, including one he will speak at in the Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary. Governor Edwards is scheduled to speak at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Rayville. Other events today are also taking place at the Louisiana Veterans Cemeteries in Slidell and Keithville.

He says this is the time of year to put our best foot forward with over 400 festivals statewide during the summer months. He says we have the best food, music, culture, and history but it’s our people that really set us apart from other states.

Governor John Bel Edwards has announced a second special session will being on June 6th, only 30 minutes after the conclusion of the regular session. During the second special session, Governor Edwards will ask legislators to raise additional revenue to fully fund TOPS, K-12 education, public colleges and healthcare.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season forecast. NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan says this should be a near-normal season with a 70-percent chance of 10 to 16 named storms. She says El Nino, which hinders the production of tropical storms, is dissipating and the Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 70% chance a La Nina will form…

The average season typically includes around 12 named storms. The Colorado State forecast team has predicted 13 named storms.

 

An Allen Parish man has died after being stung by bees more than a thousand times in an Arizona Park. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Joaquin Enriquez says 23-year-old Alex Bestler of Elton and a friend were hiking when they were attacked by a swarm of bees. He says Bestler was covered in bees.

He says Usery Mountain Park is closed during the weekend pending an investigation.

A 24-year-old pregnant Thibodaux woman has been arrested for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a teenager. Thibodaux Police Cpl. David Melancon says Alison Thibodaux has been charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He says the teenager and his mother came forward after they learned Thibodaux was pregnant.

A teenager has been arrested in the murder of East Feliciana School Board member, Broderick Brooks, who was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds in his car in north Baton Rouge on Monday. Cpl. L’Jean Mckneely says 19-year-old Jaquez Griffin has been charged with first degree murder. He says the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Brooks was said to be an active member of the school board, who was loved by everyone.

A pregnant Thibodaux woman has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a juvenile. Thibodaux Police Cpl. David Melancon says 24-year-old Alison Thibodaux has been charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
