Officials with the Louisiana Lottery say the big $420 million dollar Powerball jackpot was hit in Tennessee by 1 ticket. The prize now goes back down to $40 million dollars for Wednesday’s drawing.

Residents are bracing for a strong line of storms that are moving through the state today, and a tornado watch is now in effect for several parishes in the central and western parts of Louisiana. Wind advisories are posted throughout the state as forecasters say gusts of 30-35 miles per hour are possible, and could get as high as 45 miles per hour. The chance for severe weather will continue into tomorrow for much of the state.

Officials in New Orleans are exploring ways they can make the streets safer following another deadly shooting on Bourbon Street over the weekend claimed the life of one person and injured 9 others. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center says there’s an enhanced threat for severe weather for the northern half of the state today. There’s also a chance for severe weather in south Louisiana. The chance for severe weather will continue into tomorrow for much of the state. Damaging winds are possible with these storms.

Two people are dead and several injured following a shootout in Baton Rouge. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says last night police responded to a shooting on Essen Lane. He says 48-year-old Terrell Walker allegedly shot his girlfriend, 30-year-old April Peck, multiple times while sitting in a car and then pushed her out of the vehicle.

State Police is now investigating the case of a man who was killed in a shootout with East Baton Rouge deputies after he allegedly murdered a woman in a car before pushing her into a street and ramming bystanders and paramedics with his vehicle. Authorities say when deputies demanded the man show his hands, he fired several rounds at them. What started this incident remains unknown at this time. We’ll have more on this as it develops.

The state Department of Children and Family Services says more than 1500 babies were born exposed to drugs or alcohol last year, a number that’s tripled over the last 8 years. DCFS spokeswoman Denise Evans says this is a big problem for their department…:

Police in New Orleans say the shooting on Bourbon Street that left one man dead and nine others injured started as an argument that escalated into gunfire early Sunday morning following the Bayou Classic. They say the two men involved in the fight were not from the area and are still at large. Officials said it is believed the suspects ran into each other on the street when the shooting took place. The victims range in age from 20-37 years old – five have been released from the hospital and four others are still being treated. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects are urged to contact authorities.

They say this all stemmed from an earlier incident in which two people were shot leaving a woman dead after she was found in the middle of Essen Lane.
