A Doyline couple is facing 72 counts of aggravated animal cruelty after finding a dozen dogs abandoned on a rural road and many more living in rough conditions at the husband and wife’s home.  Sean Richardson has more.

One suspect in the hazing-related death of a Southern University student has turned himself in, and others are expected to follow suit. 23-year-old Caleb McCray is charged with manslaughter and felony hazing. Andrew Greenstein has more.

A Doyline couple faces 72 counts of aggravated animal cruelty after deputies linked them to the abandonment of over 12 dogs on a rural road. 68-year-old Alan Crowley and 58-year-old Kimberly Crowley were arrested at their mobile home, where authorities found approximately 60 more dogs living in inhumane conditions. Some were confined in overcrowded cages without food or water. Sheriff Jason Parker says they were selling the dogs online without a license…

Cut 3 (12) “…as a breeder” 

The abandoned dogs were captured and taken to a veterinarian before being placed with a rescue group. Deputies ensured the remaining animals at Crowley’s home received food and water, with LaMa Rescue stepping in to assist. Parker says it’s a bad situation.

Parker says the dogs are in the process of getting check and then hopefully adopted by loving families…

Baton Rouge Police gave an update on the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Chief Thomas Morse says the 20-year-old student and Human Jukebox member died of repeated punches to the chest while pledging to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, and one suspect is under arrest.

Morse says criminal charges are forthcoming against several additional fraternity members. Southern University President Dennis Shields says the Baton Rouge campus chapter of Omega Psi Phi is ordered to cease all activities, and other fraternities on campus are also affected.

Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards implored the school – and the city – to do better.

Cut 8 (09) “…make better decisions.”

McCray’s attorney, Dr. Phillip Robinson, says he has not seen evidence strong enough to support the charges against his client.

The good news – it’s crawfish season. The bad news – it’s crawfish theft season. And crawfish harvesters are working diligently to prevent thieves from making off with their hauls. Paul Zaunbrecher, a crawfish farmer in Acadia Parish, says the best way to stop crawfish theft is not to leave their sacks unattended.

Zaunbrecher says another way to accomplish this is to use some strategy in the order of how they catch their crawfish.

Some sophisticated crawfish thieves will steal the crawfish from the traps during overnight hours. Zaunbrecher says drastic situations call for drastic measures.

Williams was an all-American in 2005 and played on the Tigers 2003 national championship team. He went on to play 13 seasons with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. Williams was Ruston High’s defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2024 and Favorite believes Williams can coach on the college level…

We’re learning new information on the death of a Southern University student. Andrew Greenstein reports.

A 19-year-old Shreveport man, Christian D. Efferson, turned himself in after allegedly stealing a car during a test drive in Slagle. He drove off from a gas station, leaving the seller behind. Another person fled in their vehicle. The stolen car was later recovered. Efferson faces a $20,000 bond.

Former star LSU defensive tackle Klye Williams has reportedly been hired as the Tigers new defensive line coach. Williams was an all-American player for the Tigers in 2005, played on the 03 national championship team and went on to play 13 seasons with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. Spring football beings tomorrow for the Tigers and Williams is expected to be on the practice field and overseeing defensive line drills.

Dennis Skains is leaving Cecilia after leading the Bulldogs to a state championship last December. Skains is taking an assistant head coaching job at East Ascension.

 

LSU’s most experienced pitcher will not pitch this weekend in the series against North Alabama. Gavin Guidry continues to nurse a mid-body injury and Coach Jay Johnson hopes Guidry can be ready for SEC play which starts next week.

Louisiana Tech will host South Alabama for a weekend series starting at 4 PM. The Ragin Cajuns will host 21st ranked Dallas Baptist. U-L Lafayette is 6-and-7 on the year. ULM will attempt to snap a four-game losing streak when the Warhawks host UT Arlington.

McNeese is at Houston Christian. Both teams are 3-and-0 in league play and Northwestern State hosts U-I-W.

Within the last hour, Baton Rouge Police gave an update on the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Chief Thomas Morse says Caleb McCray was among members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity who repeatedly punched Wilson in the chest during a pledging ritual. McCray is charged with manslaughter and criminal hazing.

A hearing is underway in federal court in Baton Rouge aimed at halting the execution of Jessie Hoffman. Colleen Crain reports.

Venture Global announces it will invest an additional 18 billion dollars to expand its liquefied natural gas facility south of New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish. The facility was approved by President Trump in 2019. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright says the fastest growing source of energy is natural gas, and Louisiana plays a major role…

Senators Mike Fesi of Houma and Patrick McMath of Covington will be introducing a bill this session that would ban fluoride in drinking water. McMath points to a study that found that fluoride concentration that exceeds 1.5 milligrams per liter can cause health issues.

One of the reports McMath was alluding to was one done last August by the National Toxicology Program. Felicia Rabito, a professor of epidemiology at Tulane University, says that report is problematic in its methodology.

Rabito says even if the report is accepted as fact, it’s irrelevant because it cites a fluoride concentration level that’s more than twice the EPA recommended level.

A hearing is happening in federal court aimed at delaying the execution of Jessie Hoffman. The Promise of Justice Initiative is trying to prove that using nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, in violation of the 8th Amendment. Hoffman is scheduled to be executed March 18th. As such, Loyola University New Orleans law professor Dane Ciolino says he expects Chief Judge Shelly Dick to issue a ruling very quickly.

Loyola University New Orleans Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the Promise of Justice Initiative is trying to prove that using nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

Two Republican state senators will be introducing a bill in the upcoming legislative session that would ban the use of fluoride in drinking water. Patrick McMath of Covington says with nearly every toothpaste on the market containing fluoride, there is no reason why it should be in drinking water.

Health experts say the EPA standard for concentration levels in drinking water is well below the threshold that would lead to health issues.

A Southern grad has reportedly been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the death of a Southern University student who died during a suspected hazing incident that took place at a warehouse off campus. Officials say 20-year-old Caleb Wilson died after he was punched in the stomach. Caleb McCray has been charged with hazing and manslaughter.

Two members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet were in Plaquemines Parish yesterday to announce an 18-billion dollar expansion of a liquefied natural gas plant south of Myrtle Grove. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says American energy dominance is back…

Wright says in the next several years, Louisiana will likely export more LNG than any nation on Earth.

He most recently was the defensive coordinator at Ruston High School, helping the Bearcats win a state title in 2023.

The LSU women’s basketball team will face Florida in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament tonight. The Lady Tigers will be without first-team All-SEC guard Flau’Jae Johnson as she battles shin inflammation. Lady Tigers color analyst Shaeeta Williams says coach Kim Mulkey won’t risk her star’s health for the conference tournament.

In the Sun Belt women’s tournament, the Cajuns were eliminated with a two point loss to Marshall. The Lady Techsters fell to New Mexico State in regular season action, 87 to 80. The Louisiana Tech men only scored 19 points and lost to New Mexico State 67 to 55.

In the girls state basketball tournament…Huntington and Parkway advanced to their respective state title games.
