House Speaker Taylor Barras agrees another special session could be needed to address the massive deficit. But he says after the last two extraordinary sessions, the appetite to raise more revenue isn’t strong at the Capitol.

Dardenne says they do to intend to use 119-million dollars from the rainy day fund to close the gap, but that’s not enough to address the entire shortfall. The deficit is the result of lagging tax collections. Economists say the state has been losing job monthly since August 2015. Barras says unfortunately, state agencies are in for another round of painful cuts, because the revenue picture is not getting better.

Governor John Bel Edwards will be in Rome, Italy for the next few days to discuss ways to fight human trafficking with the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy. Edwards says the Houston to New Orleans corridor has one of the worst trafficking problems in the country and we must put an end to this. He says the sisters plan to open the Metanoia House, a Louisiana shelter for young victims of sex trade…

State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson and a few state legislators are traveling with the governor. Louisiana has been recognized as the leading state in the fight against sex trafficking. Edwards says Rome is leading the way putting an end to human trafficking and they hope to learn new ways to assist victims.

Edwards is also planning on meeting with Pope Francis next Wednesday. The governor says he will be paying out of pocket for himself and his wife to travel to Rome.

The entire New Orleans Fair Grounds race track is under a quarantine in an effort to stop the spread of an equine herpes virus. Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says this quarantine has been implemented out of an abundance of caution…

Strain says nine of the two-thousand horses at the track are in isolation. He says horses in barns not exposed can keep racing, while exposed horses under quarantine are monitored for at least two weeks…

A two-year-old thoroughbred gelding was humanely eutanized right after Christmas, because of the virus. Strain says an infectious disease specialist from Kentucky has been called in to contain the spread of the virus…

Almost 10,000 people are expected to be in Baton Rouge this weekend for the biggest running event of the year in the state: The Louisiana Marathon. That’s according to spokesman Danny Bourgeois. He says over the last 5 years, they’ve seen runners attend from here and beyond.:

The Quarter Marathon & 5K takes place Saturday morning, then the big event and half marathon begin early Sunday. It all kicks off at the State Capitol. He says one of the coolest things about this event is that it takes the work of over 1000 volunteers to make it happen…:

A special session looks like it might happen again this year as the Revenue Estimating Conference projects the mid year deficit to be about $313 million dollars. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says lawmakers have to give input so any cuts can be spread around..:

The governor says these projections highlight the need for comprehensive tax reform in the upcoming session.

Meanwhile Edwards is headed to Italy where the topic will be the human trafficking epidemic. He’ll be joined by State. Police COl Mike Edmonson, some lawmakers and the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy who want to open a shelter for victims of sex trade…:

A group of south Lafourche businessmen and former LSU and Tarpon football players announce they will hold a special day to honor Tiger coach Ed Orgeron on February 17th; so his home town can celebrate him being named the new leader of the Bayou Bengals. They event will be held at the Larose Civic Center. During the event, Coach O’s jersey from the 1977 State Champion SLHS football team will be retired.

Four NFL playoff games for Louisiana sports fans to watch this weekend. In the final game of the weekend, former Haughton star Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys host the Green Bay Packers. Dallas beat Green Bay 30-16 back on October 16th. Prescott threw three touchdowns in that game and hopes to use that experience to benefit him on Sunday…

The Packers will not have star wide receiver Jordy Nelson. He’s been ruled out, after taking a hard hit to the ribs in last Sunday’s playoff win over the Giants.

The Pelicans did not have Anthony Davis last night, but they still beat the Brooklyn Nets 104-95. Tyreke Evans stepped up and scored a season-high 29 points and Terrence Jones had a double-double 24 points and 12 rebounds. New Orleans faces the Chicago Bulls Saturday in the Windy City.

Louisiana Tech started a two-game road trip by beating Charlotte 79-73 last night. The Bulldogs are 3-1 in Conference USA and they’ll be at Old Dominion on Saturday.

UNO suffered its first Southland defeat as the Privateers lost to Sam Houston 70-68. Northwestern State knocked off Nicholls State 86 to 81 thanks to Sabri Thompson’s 38 points and Southeastern Louisiana rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat Abilene Christian 56-50. The Lions are 3-2 in league play.

The Revenue Estimating Conference is meeting at this hour to decide the size of the state’s midyear budget shortfall. So far a pretty picture is not being painted as lawmakers had hoped last month that tax collections would look better by now, but actually they look worse. Governor John Bel Edwards says whatever is determined today will decide whether another special session is needed. But But Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry says there’s not an appetite at the Capitol to raise any more revenue, but they do have a plan…:

Edwards estimates a shortfall greater than $300 million would require a special session to resolve.

4th District Congressman Mike Johnson has been invited by Congress to serve on another committee. Earlier this week Johnson was named to House Judiciary; today the US House of Representatives welcomed the Republican from Louisiana to the Natural Resources Committee.

The crawfish harvest is looking decent for 2017, but not as good as last year. LSU AgCenter Aquaculture Specialist Mark Shirley says it depends how the weather goes in the coming months…:

Later today, Governor Edwards along with a delegation from Louisiana that includes State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson will travel to Italy to discuss human trafficking with the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy, which has a shelter in Louisiana for juvenile victims of human trafficking.

In the past week, Louisiana has seen an increase in the number of flu cases. That’s according to Medical Director state of the Immunization Program Dr. Frank Welch who says four out of every 100 people who visit the doctor have the flu. He says if you got a flu shot, you should be protected…:

Welch says it’s rare, but if you do contract the flu virus after getting a shot, it’s usually a very mild case.

A 44-year-old north Louisiana man is behind bars facing a murder charge after Shreveport police say he was responsible for the death of an 11-month-old boy. Corporal Marcus Hines says Frederick Clark was initally charged with second-degree curelty to a juvenile…

That child, Mar’sharrd Ross, passed away earlier this week and the charges against Clark were upgraded to second-degree murder.

Could lawmakers be looking at another special session in 2017? We’ll learn more today as the Revenue Estimating Conference meets to give a closer look at what some say is expected to be a grim budget picture.

This morning Governor John Bel Edwards is on hand for a presentation of a donation by A&T in support of the Jobs for America’s Graduates program in Louisiana. It’s a non-profit initiative that officials say has helped more than a million people around the nation facing difficult challenges earn a high school or college degree.

Later, the governor along with St. Police Col Mike Edmonson will travel to Rome for conversations about the human trafficking epidemic, and personally meet on the matter with Pope Francis.

Despite crazy weather conditions, it looks to be about an average crawfish season. And prices are expending to go down as we get farther into the season depending on supply and demand…:

Flood victims who are still living in hotels won’t have to move out until February 20th as FEMA has once again extended the deadline.

In the NBA, Anthony Davis did not play — but the New Orleans Pelicans were able to hand the Nets their 8th straight loss with the Pels posing a 104-95 victory Thursday night. Davis is still dealing with a bruised hip sustained Monday after a fragrant foul caused him to crash into the stands. New Orleans plays Chicago tomorrow.

Haughton native Dak Prescott makes his first postseason start at quarterback when the Cowboys host the red hot Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon. Prescott led Dallas to the best record in the NFC and the rookie looks to carry their regular season success into the playoffs:

In college hoops: UNO was handed their first Southland loss after falling to Sam Houston 78-68. The Privateers are still first in the conference. Southeastern overcame a 12-point first-half lead to snap a two-game losing streak with a 56-50 Southland Conference win at Abilene Christian.

Nicholls State couldn’t hang on to a 13 point lead and ended up falling to in-state rival Northwestern State 86-81. Louisiana Tech nearly faltered a massive 23 point second half lead, but ended up getting the win over Charlotte 79-73.
