US Senate candidate Charles Boustany has filed a lawsuit against the author of a book that claims the congressmen was somehow involved with one of the prostitutes killed in Jefferson Davis Parish. The defamation lawsuit was filed in Lafayette Parish and asks for damages and an injunction banning further publication of “Murder in the Bayou” by Ethan Brown. Brown has said he stands by what he says in the book.

Louisiana has received a $67 million federal grant to better prepare new teachers and provide more support for rural school districts. Assistant Talent Superintendent Hannah Dietsch says much of the grant money will go towards making sure teachers are prepared for the classroom before they begin their careers in education…:

Could Tulane and LSU’s upcoming games be affected by the extremely dangerous Hurricane Matthew? The National Hurricane Center says the Category 4 storm made landfall in western Haiti this morning, with max winds near 145 miles per hour. The updated track has the storm potentially passing along or near the east coast of Florida late Thursday into Friday afternoon. Tulane is scheduled to play UCF Friday at 7 p.m. CDT in Orlando, while LSU and Florida are slated to kick off at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday in Gainesville.

In this week’s LSWA Honors, LSU Running Back Derrius Guice picked up the offensive player of the week. The product of Catholic High rused for a career best 163 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in the Tigers beatdown of Missouri.

LSU’s Kendell Beckwith got the Defensive Player of the week honor as he led the way in the game with 9 tackles.

The Special Teams Player of the Week goes to UL-Lafayette punter Steven Coutts who had a gross and net average of 48.3 yards on seven punts in the Ragin Cajuns’ 37-31 double-overtime loss to New Mexico State.

LSU and Southern Miss will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Tigers and Golden Eagles will air on the SEC Network.

Haughton Native Dak Prescott is a candidate for NFC Rookie of the Year as he has led the Cowboys to a three and one record. Prescott threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns in Dallas’ 24-17 win over San Francisco.

While flood victims in south Louisiana are struggling to recover from the August flood, many north Louisianans have still not recovered from the flooding there in March. Monroe Police Juror Pat Moore says many people still have not gotten back into their homes. She says some of the people didn’t know how to get the assistance they need.

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Troy Hebert has filed a lawsuit in an effort to have Louisiana Public Broadcasting and the Council for a Better Louisiana to include more candidates in a October 18th televised debate.  The five candidates invited are Republicans Charles Boustany, John Fleming, and John Kennedy, along with Democrats Foster Campbell and Caroline Fayard. Hebert says he always knew the system was rigged in favor of the rich candidates.

Along with having raised one million dollars, candidates must have polled at least 5-percent in a non-partisan survey. CABL President Barry Erwin says with so many candidates in the race and being only three weeks away from the election, there has to be some criteria for participation.

Herbert says LPB is state funded by taxpayer dollars and they shouldn’t be using taxpayer money to favor certain candidates. He says CABL and LPB should try using common sense and use different methods to give each candidate a chance take the stage.

Louisiana residents can now buy REAL ID licenses today from the Office of Motor Vehicles. In October of 2020, travelers will need a REAL ID to fly domestically without a passport. OMV COmmissioner Karen St. Germain says in order to get an ID, you’ll need to bring in your birth certificate, social security card and proof of residency and they look similar to your current license.

LSU Health New Orleans researchers find there is a link between certain types of cancer and sugary beverage consumption. Dr. Melinda Sothern with LSU Health New Orleans says added sugar was found to be connected to some cancers, not natural sugars.

She says they recommend that people do not have more than three 12 ounce sugary drinks per week.

 

The new slogan from Keep Louisiana Beautiful aims to raise awareness about the state’s litter problem. Executive Director Susan Russel says she hopes “Love the Boot, Don’t Pollute” will get a message across to Louisianians not to trash our wonderful state. She says they hope to see less garbage in years to come, as volunteers still had a lot of trash to pick up last year.

She says they are seeing a decline in litter around Louisiana and believes that’s because of the efforts of 35-thousand volunteers.

According to authorities, a 16-year-old Woodlawn student has been arrested today by Caddo Sheriff’s deputies for posting threats about students and teachers on her Instagram account. The posts made on the account wally _ clown  threaten that Woodlawn students and teachers would be kidnapped and killed. Account followers reported the messages to the Sheriff’s office. Threats were also made against students at Fair Park High School. The teenager was booked into Caddo Juvenile Detention Center.

A report by ProPublica finds many state leaders along with residents are very frustrated with the Red Cross’ flood response efforts in Louisiana. The report stems from email’s from state officials showing concern with the organization, as well as many attempts to resolve the issues. Officials with the the governor’s office are reportedly meeting today with the Red Cross.

Head Coach Ed Orgeron says he’s still not sure if running back Leonard Fournette will be able to play against the Gators on Saturday, because of a bad ankle.

Florida Head Coach Jim McElwain says quarterback Luke Del Rio could play for the Gators on Saturday. He’s missed the last two games because of a sprained knee. Florida has only scored 20 points in the last six quarters. For the seaosn, Del Rio has completed 61-percent of his passes for 762 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.

UL Lafayette football coach Mark Hudspeth announced today that Jalen Nixon suffered a career-threatening ankle injury in the double-overtime loss to New Mexico State. Nixon came in for an ineffective Anthony Jennings. Hudspeth says Jennings is still the Cajuns starting QB and Jordan Davis is his back-up.

The Saints head into the bye week with a 1-and-3 record after yesterday’s miraculous victory over the San Diego Chargers. New Orleans trailed by 13 points midway through the fourth quarter, but thanks to a couple of Charger turnovers, the Saints escaped San Diego with a 35-34 win. After a quarter of the season, New Orleans is in a tie for second place in the NFC South. Atlanta is running away with the division with a three and one record.

Executive Director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Susan Russell, says they hope “Love the Boot, Don’t Pollute” will provide a consistent message to Louisianans not to trash the state. She believes it’s a fitting slogan for the Bayou State, especially the word love.

Rogers says the slogan appears on bumper stickers that will be placed on 12-thousand state vehicles.
