The Restore Louisiana Task Force passed a resolution unanimously recommending low income and the disabled be the first to receive the first round of the state’s 438 million dollars of disaster assistance. The task force suggests sending their flood assistance plan to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and HUD could issue spending requirements by as early as next week.

Entergy’s request to construct a new 869 million dollar plant in St. Charles Parish has been approved by the Pulbic Service Commission. Entergy Spokesperson Michael Burns says the plant will be modern and highly efficient and will save customers billions.

The plant is scheduled to be up and running by June of 2019.

The Louisiana Holiday Trail of Lights begins today across north Louisiana. Executive Director of the Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lynn Doresy, says multiple festivals are held in Alexandria-Pineville, Monroe-West Monroe, Shreveport-Bossier, Minden and Natchitoches.

It’s the final home game of the season for the Tigers at noon today as the Bayou Bengals will host Florida. A win for Florida and they clinch the SEC East, while a victory for LSU and a win against Texas A-and-M on Thanksgiving Day, the Tigers could receive an invite to play in the Sugar Bowl. Two more wins could also convince athletic director Joe Alleva to hire Ed Orgeron as the permanent head coach.

Alleva released in a letter to LSU fans describing what he’s looking for in the next head coach of the Tigers. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says one of the items in Alleva’s letter stuck out…

In other college football action today, Ragin Cajuns visit Georgia, ULM is at Appalachian State, Grambling visits Texas Southern, while McNeese hosts Lamar.

 

 

It was a wild night of high school football playoff action last night…in Division One…the defending champs, Catholic High was shutout by Brother Martin 28-0.

In Division Two, University High upset Loyola Prep 41-25. In Division Four…Central Catholic advanced to the semifinals to play Ascension Episcopal.

In 5-A, Acadiana beat Ponchatoula 38-14. In Four-A…Benton doubled up Rayne 28-14, In Two-A,. Rayville had an upset win over Welsh 20-13, Ferriday was also a winner.

And in One-A, Plain Dealing was victorious over Oberlin 14-6 and they’ll play Oak Grove in the quarterfinals.

In basketball…Jrue (Drew) Holiday played his first game of the season last night and scored 21 points as the Pelicans defeated Portland 113 to 101. Anthony Davis was also outstanding, 38 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

And the LSU Tigers improved to 3-0 with a 78-70 win over North Florida.

An arrest has been made in the case of the shooting at Southern University. Baton Rouge Police say 20-year-old Larry McCray has been charged with attempted first degree murder, after he allegedly left a 19-year-old in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities say Thursday night’s shooting was the result of an armed robbery gone wrong. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and more arrests could be made.

Governor John Bel Edwards has delayed an 18-million dollar cut to public colleges, at the request of legislators, who expressed concern about another cut to higher ed. Monroe Representative Katrina Jackson asks for another month to see if there’s a way they can cut the budget, without impacting universities.

The cuts is part of the governor’s plan to eliminate a $313 million budget deficit.

The Public Service Commission has approved Entergy’s request to build a new 869 million dollar plant in St. Charles Parish. Entergy Spokesperson Michael Burns says they’re investing in the future of Louisiana. He says it will be a modern, highly efficient plant and will save customers billions.

New Orleans Pelicans star Jrue Holiday announced he’s going to return to play after being with his wife while she had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. Holiday added that he was returning to the Pelicans “because my wife said I could.” The Pelicans are 2-10 on the season and could really use some help from Holiday.

The resolution recommends offering three types of assistance for homeowners- state managed construction, homeowner managed construction, and reimbursement for completed repairs.

Governor John Bel Edwards has delayed an $18 million cut to public colleges, which is part of his plan to eliminate a $313 million budget deficit. Prairieville Representative Tony Bacala says he doesn’t understand why higher education is taking the brunt of the cuts, when the Louisiana Department of Health hasn’t taken any.

Cut 13 (12) “shared burden”
Bacala adds that in the past four years, the higher ed budget has increased by $200 million, but LDH’s budget has seen a $1.4 billion hike.

Dorsey says in Minden they will have a fasching festival, which is a German celebration similar to Mardi Gras, to honor Minden’s German heritage. She says it all begins at dusk tomorrow when all the holiday lights in the city will be turned on.

Natchitoches Main Street Manager, Samantha Bonnette, says Turn on the Lights is their kickoff to their annual Christmas festival. She says tomorrow the city of Natchitoches will celebrate with a day-long event of food, fun, and fireworks. She says there will be food vendors, live music, and inflatable jumpers for the kids.

State Officials say 8,000 homes have been repaired through the Shelter at Home Program. In a statement, leaders say they are working extremely hard to get families affected by the August flooding back to their homes in time for the holidays. They say another 1,900 homes are under construction through the program.
