The number of international visitors has grown in Louisiana, but Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, who oversees tourism in the state, doesn’t just want these travelers to visit New Orleans. Nungesser says there are direct flights into New Orleans from London, Germany, and Honduras, but he wants to see these tourists get out to the rest of the state.

Nungesser says there are 17 scenic byways across Louisiana through 53 parishes covering 2,400 miles. He hopes these highways encourage international travelers to get off the interstates and see more of the Bayou State. He says this would not only benefit the small towns in Louisiana, but the state as a whole.

Louisiana saw a 36-percent increase in international tourism from 2014 to 2015, ranking second in the nation for overall growth. Nungesser says Louisiana could see one million more international visitors by 2018, representing an economic impact of $1.7 billion.

Attorney General Jeff Landry says he applauds Judge Todd Hernandez’ ruling. He says at the end of the day, this case was about the governor trying to create his own law.

The governor had filed a lawsuit against the AG for blocking state contracts that contained anti-discrimination language. Landry says it wasn’t the anti-discrimination aspect of the order that was the problem, it was the legality. He says if a bill passed that established the LGBT community as a protected class, then that would be different.

Sean Sullivan with Forum for Equality Foundation says this ruling is another setback for the LGBT community in Louisiana. But he says they are confident the Governor’s Office will continue to fight to move these protections forward.

Sullivan says these are not new protections, as they have been in place under two previous Louisiana governors, Edwin Edwards and Kathleen Blanco. He says unfortunately, at this point in time these kinds of protections are necessary.

LSU President F. King Alexander went before the House Appropriations Committee and expressed his concerns over the 16th budget cut in nine years that the school is facing. Alexander says they can’t be much more efficient when LSU is already 46 out of 50 flagship universities in per student spending. He says at some point the state needs to invest in the next generation of students.

Higher Education Commissioner Joseph Rallo is asking the legislature to increase funding by 189-million dollars in next year’s budget. But the state has as an estimated 600-million dollar budget deficit for this year. Alexander says the University of Alabama is in the process of hiring 300 new teachers, while LSU has lost over 500 in the past nine years.

The tables turned on a robbery suspect in Shreveport when a 71-year-old shop owner took action into his own hands. Cpl. Marcus Hines with Shreveport Police says the owner let 36-year-old Michael Kelly into his business to use the bathroom. He says that’s when Kelly stole the man’s wallet and things turned violent.

Hines says Kelly was struck three times and tried to flee on foot, but collapsed in front of the business. He says when police arrived, the owner was visibly shaken.

Hines says Kelly faces a laundry list of charges, including armed robbery, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, resisting an officer, and an outstanding warrant.

A judge has thrown out Governor John Bel Edward’s executive order aimed at protecting the rights of LGBT people in government, and the story is making national headlines. The judge agreed with Attorney General Jeff Landry in a suit stating that the order was outside of what the governor was allowed to do under the constitution. Edwards says they plan to appeal.

Governor John Bel Edwards Executive Order which contains certain protections for members of the LGBT community contracting for state work has been ruled unconstitutional. It’s a victory for Attorney General Jeff Landry who sued because he felt the order was overreach. The ruling said the governor cannot act outside the scope of his authority with executive orders. Governor Edwards says they plan to appeal.

More people outside the country are visiting Louisiana than ever and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser expects that growth to continue. His office is now promoting 17 scenic byways to encourage international travelers to see more of The Bayou State than just the big cities…:

The search for a new offensive coordinator at LSU is over. The Tigers are slated to announce Matt Canada out of Pitt as the new man for the job at this hour. Under Canada, the 2016 Panther offense scored 76 points in a win over Syracuse to cap the regular season and Pitt also beat Big 10 champion Penn State. LSU has its new offensive coordinator. It’s Matt Canada, who has had success directing high-powered offenses at Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Northern Illinois and Indiana. Canada also has a history coaching up quarterbacks. This past season, Pitt QB Nathan Peterman led the ACC in QB rating this year and had 26 touchdowns to six interceptions. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says this is good news on the recruiting front, as the Tigers are trying to get a four-start recruit from Mississippi to sign with LSU…

Canada is 41-years-old and spent yesterday interviewing for the job.

UL Lafayette has lifted the interim tag from defensive coordinator Mike Lucas. Lucas was named interim defensive coordinator after the first game and the Cajuns finished the regular season 24th in rushing defense, 34th in third down conversion defense and 40th in total defense.

The LHSAA is considering playing the nine state football championships on the same weekend. Earlier this month, the select title games were held on one weekend and the non-select on the other. But that resulted in the Division One Championship kicking-off after 10 PM. The proposal is to play three games a day from December 7th to the 9th.

In college basketball last night…LSU trailed by seven points at halftime to North Carolina Central, but the Tigers played much better in the second half and won 70-66. Antonio Blakeney led the way with 27 points.

Also yesterday, Louisiana Tech topped Prairie View 65-52. Jacobi Boykins drained five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points. The Bulldogs are now 6-4 on the year.

State Police reminds the public to heed warnings at railroad crossings after two people were killed in a train crash near Hammond. Trooper Dustin Dwight says there’s no way to know how fast a train is travelling, so it’s never safe to risk racing the train.

State Director Dawn Starns says many business owners now have a renewed since of hope that they can grow their companies. She says optimism is soaring in many categories.

Following a fatal train crash in Tangipahoa Parish, State Police reminds drivers not to race trains. Trooper Dustin Dwight says yesterday 23-year-olds Colton Williams and Justin Long were in the vehicle at a railroad crossing when they went around the downed cross rail.

Dwight says the impact pushed the vehicle about 125 yards away from the point of impact.

The personal finance website, Wallethub, ranks three Louisiana cities as the most sinful. Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Shreveport are all ranked in the top 20, with Baton Rouge the highest at eighth. These three cities also rank in the top ten as the laziest. Jill Gonzales explains why….

State Police say two Tickfaw residents were killed in a train crash as the driver was attempting to go around cross arms with flashing red lights. They say 23-year-old Colton Williams approached the crossing and ran directly into the path of an Amtrack passenger train in Natalbany, causing his vehicle to be pushed about 125 yards. Williams and his passenger, 23-year-old Justin Long were killed on scene. None of the 68 passengers on the train were injured.
